EPISODE 18: HANGOVER FROM HELL

Previously posted:

Pilgrimage road trip! GADEN-KO heads on over to the Temple of LISHI-NA, to learn about MYSTICS or something. Meanwhile, JOLUNE has just finished a night of SOBER MEDITATION following an adventure in the Shrine of Healing...

So, what happened at the Shrine of Healing?

Is it true what they say about the visions?

Did you have a good time with your friends?

Did you hear about that cantina burning down?

...Nope.

Ugh, my head. Why are these ruins so well lit?

DESTROY! DESTROY!

Please be quiet. Please.

DESTROY! DESTROY!

This is the Marker of Lishi-Na? It looks like a broken pot.

[Whatever this pile of rubble once was, it has crumbled beyond recognition]

Ahh!

Where were you hiding?

Hiding?

Rrright... Here's the broken pot of Lishi-Na. I'm sorry, Gaden-Ko. Perhaps it can be repaired.

Outsider misunderstanding. A foundation stone. The entire building is the marker.

...?

Awkward.

Predictable arrogance. There were whispers in Voss-Ka, of a Jedi stupid enough to escort a young Mystic away from the city.

That's two Jedi stupid enough!

But when they hear the brat died in your care, the Voss will see the Republic very differently.

You will not force the Voss to follow your path.

It's already too late. The toxin on that blade was an exotic Republic compound, as any investigation will show. Even a drop is eventually fatal.

Shendan's a pretty easy boss. He swings, he stabs, he dies.

Enough...

You are dying. Release your hatred, feel the sanctity of this place.

So naïve. But I feel... calm. *dies*

My wound... freezes. Burns.

I've never encountered this poison before.

The shrine. Take me to the Shrine of Healing.

You mustn't die! Master, can't you do something?

BACK TO THE SHRINE OF HEALING!

A Sith Lord tried to assassinate him, to discredit the Republic.

Whatever happened totally wasn't our fault.

Foolishness. Come, Gaden-Ko. To the healers.

If I hadn't already done the Trials, the attendant would have told Jolune to get lost at this point. You're barred from continuing the Consular's story until you do the Trials sidequest.

I hope the healers can help Gaden-Ko.

You called him an rear end in a top hat yesterday.

Well, yeah. But he's our rear end in a top hat.

You acted quickly, but the poison eats at him.

We require another, of great mental or physical strength, to purge it.

If there's anything I can do for Gaden-Ko, just ask.

We need you.

I've done this before. Something like this at any rate.

Your friend also seems worthy. Gaden-Ko is fortunate. Will you take the risk, outsiders?

We have to do something.

I accept the dangers, for Gaden-Ko's sake. It's not like my hangover can get any worse.

Gaden-Ko grows weak. Outsider, be prepared. We begin.

*hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm*

*astral projection sound*

This is different. But I'm the same. Or is it the other way around?

You're new. What, precisely, are you?

I belong to Gaden-Ko. I am the part of Gaden-Ko that suffers and must be healed.

I take back everything bad I ever said about alternative medicine.

Pain feeds on pain. You know this, from battling the Empire. So, how does one cope with the tyrant? Or the scalpel?

Resisting the tyrant reveals his weakness. Enduring the scalpel leads to healing. Endure. In enduring, grow strong.

Yes. Endurance leads to insight, and strength. Your understanding will make this exchange easier.

[spot the graphical glitch]

There are a variety of ways for this to play out. Sacrificing yourself is the most moral, and the only route that gets you LS points. The downside is that there are actual consequences to this; Jolune is afflicted by a debuff that will interrupt her actions and movement at random for the next twenty real-world minutes. This makes combat a challenge, and your best option is to quit the game and log back in later.

The dark side path is to persuade the Voss “nurse”, Asha-Mu, to sacrifice herself. It works, and there's no debuff for you, but the game very strongly implies that Asha-Mu now has permanent damage to her nervous system because of it. Oh well, sucks to be you, minor NPC who we'll never see again.

The neutral path is getting a companion to do it, in which case they get the debuff. The dialogue persuading them is waaaay too cold-blooded for Jolune, which is why I didn't show it off. However, I still found their reactions to be interesting character building stuff, so here are all the companion conversations for this scene.

The treatment is complete. Gaden-Ko's recovery begins.

...

Impressive. Gaden-Ko is stronger for this. Here, to aid your recovery.

...A lollipop?

You were very brave. Leave when you wish, outsider. Go well.

We'll leave when Gaden-Ko's ready to travel again.

I am improved.

No. He was a Sith Lord, corrupted by the dark side of the Force.

I saw you ease his death.

It's what makes us better than the Empire.

But the poison was made by the Republic.

Um...

My journey is not right. My visions should begin, to make me wise.

Every Force-aware culture has trials. Perhaps this is how the Force prepares a Mystic.

Your Force is yours. I am Voss.

A potential who contemplates receives a sign. Guidance. I will need protection.

I promise you will not be harmed again.

The carving was broken. First, we gather the pieces.

Fetch quest, ahoy!

I speak with healers. Go. Rest. Call on your device when all is ready.

NEXT TIME: Nadia ruins history, Zenith lays down the law, and the Voss have a slight armageddon problem.

Gaden-Ko posted:

Gaden-Ko is the son of a sculptor and a former Voss commando who was maimed by the Gormak when Gaden-Ko was small. As is Voss custom, he was raised by his grandfather–Dajan-Ko–who soon noticed the young Gaden-Ko’s uncanny intuition. This insight allowed him to aid Voss commandos by predicting where Gormak patrols would be. Thus marked as a potential Mystic visionary, he has spent years at the Tower of Prophecy studying and preparing to go on his pilgrimage.

Gaden-Ko’s generation is the first to grow up in a Voss-Ka where alien outsiders are a common sight. He has always had an interest in these foreigners, even developing a friendship with the Republic ambassador. Perhaps because of these outside influences, Gaden-Ko is seen to be rather impulsive and impatient compared to other Voss.
