Directed by: John Frankenheimer
Starring: Rock Hudson

"Seconds" (1966) is visually fascinating with solid acting and a disturbing atmosphere. The story centers around a aging man named Arthur Hamilton. He is tired of his routine lifestyle and one day he is shocked to receive a phone call from a long-dead friend. The friend explains that a special company faked his death and gave him an opportunity to start life over again. Arthur soon chooses to do the same, leaving behind his wife and everything he once knew. After surgery he is reborn as the handsome and young Tony Wilson (Hudson) and implanted into a Californian community with a ready-made life as a popular artist. He has a personal butler, a cute girlfriend, money, --everything a normal person thinks they need to be successful in life. Only it's not enough. The morals kick in. He has to figure out where his old life went wrong. The movie's final chilling sequence of events may very well lead to the most depressing and downright disturbing cinematic climax most viewers have ever seen.

This film oozes paranoia and is the pioneer of modern day movies such as Memento and Requiem for a Dream. It is also one of the earliest mainstream films to show full frontal nudity (in the only scene of the film that gets a bit too drawn-out). Frankenheimer proves that he's a true master with his insightful direction and insanely creepy camera angles and effects. Rock Hudson is brilliant.

ps- remake planned for 2005

4.5/5

RATING: 4.5

PROS: Brilliant visually imagery, great acting, years ahead of it's time
CONS: The plot seems a bit stretched out, too disturbing for some

devil never even lived
they're remaking this?

I thought it was a weird weird story, reminded alot of the Manchurian candidate for some reason. The ending was a bit of a drag though. I can't really recommend this one to friends since it's an acquired taste.
