While it may not be video game music in the strict definition, Erik Satie's piano pieces are wonderful and walk that fine line between haunting and meditative. Definitely watch Man on Wire.

Why does everyone think I'm going to get in trouble?

It came out a few days ago, but man I am in love with Half Minute Hero: The Second Coming's soundtrack. It's got a great selection of game composers, such as Motoi Sakuraba (of Tales, Star Ocean, etc. fame), Yoko Shimomura (Kingdom Hearts, Mario RPGs, Street Fighter 2), Yasunori Mitsuda (Chrono Trigger) and more!

I can't find much of the game's soundtrack on youtube, but at the very least I've found two of my favorite songs:

Winged my step - Motoi Sakuraba
Cheap treasures - Hideki Asanaka

Winged my step in particular sounds like a lot of Sakuraba's other work, but drat this stuff sounds way more inspired than his recent stuff in Tales games. :allears:

I've always been a big fan of Yuzo Koshiro's music and one lesser known gem is his soundtrack for Misty Blue, an old late 80s/early 90s visual novel type game. I barely know anything about the game, but I've always liked the soundtrack and it's 80s dance club feel.

TOVA TOVA TOVA
PREPARE FOR SUPREME NECROMANCY VIA THE BIGGEST POST IN THE THREAD OTHER THAN ONES WITH EMBEDDED VIDEOS, SORRY (somebody has to bump this thread soon, after all)

This thread has shown me an amazing assortment of music I enjoy that I had never heard before, given that I basically only ever owned console systems if someone gave me one, and I was almost exclusively a computer-gamer my entire life... but that also means a lot of my favorites have not even come close to being posted yet!

(Also nobody is going to fix it I am sure, but at least a few posts per page have nothing but links to YouTube videos that have been taken down)

In CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER of course. My only regret is that I do not have exactly one song for each year :(

Seven Cities of Gold - Title. This is a Spanish madrigal song called "La Bomba" by Mateo Flecha, which had just been recorded a year earlier by the King's Singers--likely where Roy Glover heard it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmkwC92rTxI

Ballblazer - Title. Pretty much hands-down the best computer game music of the 1980s. I WILL FIGHT YOU ON THIS POINT. Well it definitely ranks amongst the best things ever produced with primitive sound equipment anyway. As repetitive and insane as it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i7V7B57Kbqk

Panther - The Game's Only Song. Yeah I am sure people will hear this and be like OH GOD THE PAIN but if you give it a bit I think even people who hate POKEY music will be at least mildly intrigued.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeHDlZkQiRY

Tintin on the Moon - Title. I told Jeroen Tel how much I loved this song and he told me he wrote it in about an hour after getting home from high school. Hmm.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hz6KO0gnrS8

Ironsword: Wizards & Warriors II - Title. Kind of cheating since it is just the Romeo & Juliet theme, but it is SO GOOD for what it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbIJM1xAjNY

Ultima VII - "Music Box" / "Wisps." Illustrating that sometimes the most memorable songs are the minimalist ones.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZY_FunMoXqo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CmkzQDLMQ4g

World Heroes 2 - "Erik the Viking Stage." Sometimes I played characters in games based almost solely on their level music. Well in this case I also like vikings but it was at least 50% music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2jfuw4GdvZI

SkyRoads - Road 1 Music. Mmmmmmmmmmm
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ASWF-EASOLI

Donkey Kong Country - "Fear Factory." Originally found when searching Napster for Fear Factory songs. Yoshi Jjang posted this one in 2012 but I want to call attention to it again particularly as he claimed to be working on a UK Hardcore cover of it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n3Sjr4e9YGo

Command & Conquer - "Industrial." I played this game like two or three times ever, as I have never much cared for real-time anything, but dude. This song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCaJXJJa1tA

Iron & Blood - "Stellerex's Theme." If you only listen to one of these links, make it this one. The absolute best thing to come out of this, one of the worst fighting games ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QdluA8SIO4M

Fallout - "City of the Dead." Surely the least song-like song on this list, but dude. That distant engine/horn sound ... still gives me shivers 17 years later. WOOO WASTELAND 2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7zfrSJUEbY

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night: "Lost Painting"::::: Dude seriously this song is so good it was all I could do to actually leave the part of the inverted castle where this played ... ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UlBcCSbOwek

EverQuest - "Kerra Isle." Not Kerra Isle like the zone, but Kerra Isle like the thing in Erud's Crossing that was also for some reason called Kerra Isle. This song was so good that I would park my character there while cleaning my room just to hear it because I am a sad man :(
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qMuC30JVu60

Um Jammer Lammy - "Fright Flight." I mostly burned out on HARD GUITAR RRRARRR! video game music ages ago, but this track is still basically delightful. Though actually playing the game definitely adds a lot to it, since the level (like all levels) makes no sense.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8FHp_NtphU

Might & Magic VII - No Clue What This Song Is. This song is basically the definition of "slow build," but the payoff always gets me.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jED5AmJFG98

Deus Ex - "NYC Bar." As far as I can tell, I am the only person who thinks this is the best Deus Ex track, but it is just so good. It makes me happy no matter how many times I hear it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YfsYfEA9OMs

Might & Magic VIII - "Garrote Gorge/Ironsand Deserts/Ravage Roaming." Mmmmm. I do not remember if this song only played once you could fly or whether I just associate it strongly with being able to fly in the game, but either way, oh yeah.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WGGp3mvffyg

Bust a Groove 2 - Tsutomu's Theme/"Got to Be Happy." Special dedication to CaptainRat, who has always hated this incredibly fun dance song.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6hWE5NHEGvM

Anarchy Online - The song that plays near the newbie apartments and others? I am not even ashamed to say the first minute or so of this compilation track may legitimately be my favorite jazz composition ever.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=skY_CS19Fdw

Wizardry 8 - "Arnika." Apparently there have to be soothing overtones for me to love chamber music.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGUUqrtVinc

Half-Life 2 - "CP Violation." This is not a game that normally even comes to mind when thinking about classic music, but fortunately I ran into this in a "related songs" link and remembered how much it set the mood for the opening of the game.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8l81NX9X6w

Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines - Theme. Also basically Massive Attack's "Angel" but totally works anyway.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=znc1m36BYng

King's Bounty: The Legend (and all the other sequels after it) - "Glory Ride." These games have so many amazing songs, but this post is long enough as it is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cT5rCzyBLc0
OK just this one too because it is so inspirational, "Sacred Campaign" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mo-cnqjVWIM

Rochard - Title/"Space Debris." Totally cheating since this is a remake of the musician's early-1990s Demoscene track "Space Debris" but drat if I do not love it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lR7ODA2cLWY

Secret World - "Siren's Song." This song may hold the record for me putting off making storyline progress in a game for the longest time just so I could continue listening to the song. If it were not so easy to find on YouTube I might still be in the middle of this quest.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Hi3Fi_cKho#t=156

State of Decay - "Hope Prevails." Hey look, Jesper Kyd! FauxGateau helped me discover that he wrote game music in a post from 2012--I only knew him from the Amiga Demoscene! Unless there are multiple musicians named Jesper Kyd.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qKFceNZ0uzQ

South Park: The Stick of Truth - "Blame Canada" 8-Bit Reprise. Perfect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DBY09gdiIK8

Jazzpunk - Intro. This song pretty much sets the stage for why this is one of the best games around.

I am cool.
I'm just gonna post all of my favorites from the Super Smash Bros series, now that 4's been out for a little while. I like Smash a whole lot and the remixes are always really good :3:

Super Smash Bros. - I love the cheap MIDI instrumentation in this game, it's great. Smash 64 was such a loving ugly game but it had fantastic sound effects and it just worked out in the end, like a lot of games on the beloved shitbox Nintendo 64.
Yoshi's Island
Dreamland

Melee
Menu 2 - I like that they remixed this for Brawl and added it again in Smash 4 because it's pretty much the best menu music ever. It was a really long time before I heard this tune in Melee and when I did I was like :eyepop: (I was a stupid kid.)
Princess Peach's Castle
Temple - Probably my favorite stage in any Smash game. I mean I am fully aware that it's a garbage stage but I love the music and it's just a fun stage to play on.
Brinstar
Brinstar Depths\
Poke Floats - Runner-up for best stage in Melee.
Mother

Brawl
Battlefield ver. 2
Underground (Super Mario Land)
Castle/Boss Fortress
Ocarina of Time Medley
Meta Knight's Revenge
Stickerbrush Symphony - MVP best remix in Brawl (two things were good about Brawl: the music, and Lucas)
Sector 1

Smash 4
Fortress Boss Remix
Full Steam Ahead
Yoshi's Woolly World Remix
King Dedede's Theme ver. 2
Battle! Team Flare
Minor Circuit Remix
Duck Hunt Medley - I love the Zapper "splash!" sound at about 5 seconds in. Duck Hunt's a really fun stage and one of my favorites in Smash 4.
Light Plane Remix
Wii Sports Series Medley
Pac-Man's Park - Block Town
Master Core

This song plays if you lose your sanity during the last boss fight.

The Shadow Hearts games have such incredibly strong and eclectic soundtracks. They're really dark games as far as JRPGs go, and the soundtracks are fittingly oppressive and tense. The remixes of battle themes that play when you lose your sanity, like the one you linked, are really brilliant. In fact, the random encounter themes are super good in general:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hxe0UdE34x8

My favorite track from the series is probably The Fate from SH2.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXjaKhGLkXw
That violin solo at 2:50, god drat son. It reminds me a lot of Time's Scar from Chrono Cross, and not surprisingly I think it's one of the tracks from SH2 that Mitsuda was involved with.

Mitsuda OSTs have been a lot of what I've listened to lately, along with the soundtracks from the Drakengard and NieR games.

The Drakengard 1 OST is a bunch of dissonant chopped-up samples of various classical pieces that fits the tone of the game perfectly:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXu_S7-SOYU
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P1pGIX6C9Ag

D2 has a more conventional but still gorgeous orchestral OST:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cPaZpdD5T3g
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PK-fLU5OSxo

D3 goes full :catdrugs: with electric guitar and crazy vocal effects, like midway through this track:

It also has gamelan on the final boss track. Gamelan is always a good thing.

This reminds me of the feel of Aquaria. Maybe if you make music for water levels you're going to be circling the same concepts.

Aquaria has that thing I like, where they keep progressing a base song into a more complex one.
