That analysis leans pretty hard on the end/postgame, and it's true enough, but Canopus will pretty much carry you on his wonderful wings for a great deal of the maingame content. I preferred a 2h crossbow on him and he demolished fools with it.

To be fair with 2H crossbow and augment darkness or air or fire Canopus will carry you post game anyways. Darkness = Ghostwail finisher + the dark crossbow that needs level 32 or 34? Air = El Colas Winds + Elemental gear (falcon mails are relatively easy to get) + Ysaar Air Crossbow  Fire = Brimstone hail finisher + the fire crossbow at level 36.
