Majorian posted:A car chase with J.W. Pepper bellowing bad one-liners in a bad Southern accent, though? Sorry, doesn't work for me, and I question the sanity of anybody who says it works for them. I haven't listened to the Golden Gun podcast yet but they said they hated that Pepper dude in the Live and Let Die podcast so I think they agree with you.

Sorry, some people prefer a humorous fun take on Bond over the dark angsty Bond Craig portrays. Different strokes for different folks.

If nothing else this podcast has made me realize some people take the James Bond franchise very seriously. I've been a fan pretty much my whole life but I realize how bad and dumb the movies mostly are, but they are fun as poo poo as well as really neat time capsules.

Didn't Craig speak on the whole humorous vs serious Bond dichotomy recently? Fake Edit: quote:“We had to destroy the myth because [the Austin Powers movies] hosed us,” Craig said. “I am a huge Mike Myers fan, so don’t get me wrong, but he kind of hosed us, made it impossible to do the gags.” http://www.avclub.com/article/daniel-craig-says-austin-powers-hosed-james-bond--212553

I've listened to most of them I think (coming in as a HDTGM fan) but the Tomorrow Never Dies episode totally threw me. Gourley's consistent dislike for it (calling it the worst Bond, which is absolutely unbelievable) made the whole thing sort of weird.

It is a very bad movie with a thin arch. Michelle Yeoh is good though.

The Ape of Naples posted:Didn't Craig speak on the whole humorous vs serious Bond dichotomy recently? It's interesting though - each take on Bond is improved by the legacy of other versions. By the end of the three Craig films, Bond's crawled through some dark poo poo, but ultimately lands on a more human note (i.e. he cared for Dench, the closet thing a guy like Crag-Bond could really have to a mother) than anything we saw in Casino Royale. That arc makes the final moments of Skyfall so loving great, because it's like Bond's earned back a bit of that moneypenny-quipping, secret-docier about volcano base bad-guy mission accepting absurdity by giving us some humanity first (but still within an ultimately silly world of omg hacker ultra villans with weird sex/mother issues). I was loving beaming when Bond walked back through that needlessly 60s padded door again, not because I wanna see Daniel Craig get racist surgery to become "Asian" or watch a melting ice palace, but because it was this nod to the fact that Bond has only worked for so long because, ultimately, the basic topes are pretty absurd, and that's what makes it kinda fun. Bond getting all gritty and giving us some more serious themes to think about wouldn't have worked so well, if volcano bases full of ninjas and oddjob hat weren't a thing we loving loved at, like, age 12. After the later Bosnan movies, it was time for something different. Now that we've seen the birth of a Bond who's seen some poo poo but regained a little more to live for: Craig's above-referenced comments, the final moments of Skyfall and the apparent title of the next film have got me pretty drat excited for whatever's coming next. Ideally, we'll get a good balance of slightly more grounded cat petting maniac vs. totally invulnerable one-liner sex god who is occasionally shaken, but never ever loving stirred. Basically this podcast is cool and good. I've only listened to like, the Dr. No and From Russia With Love episodes, but Skyfall's up for tomorrow, because I just watched it.

Thunderball is a very good ep, I think my favorite is Diamonds Are Forever though because I have a special place in my heart for it and Doug is really good on it. Also Mr Kidd and Mr Wint are the best henchmen

The Ape of Naples posted:The Skyfall episode was a letdown for me. I'm not a huge Bond fan. Skyfall is my first Bond movie in years and the only Craig one I've seen. I really liked it. I liked the contrast of an aging Bond to the modern age. Maybe the movie hit you over the head with it but it's fine in an action movie. Man - I enjoyed the Skyfall episode, but disagreed with (almost) their entire take on the film. According to the podcast, the movie was too "omg dark" and "so dour" - but each substantive criticism offered was basically the hosts picking apart the logic of a fun moment of the sort they claimed wasn't present in the film. Skyfall just "wasn't fun roger moore bond enough" - but their complaints were 90%: wow did you see how lame it was when Bond vaults himself over a kimono dragon (and a slight flurry of the old Bond theme plays), and how does that bad guy really have such an intricate and ILLOGICAL plan (I guess they should have had Bardem pet a cat, or have an island robot dragon designed to help american missiles bend in flight for no reason?). To me, Skyfall is classic, silly Bond: but it takes its internal themes a little more seriously. Prime example: substantial time in the podcast was spent on Bond grabbing an Aston Martin DB5 from some secret lot while escaping with M, and how illogical that was. For me, that moment made the film. In Casino and Quantum, Bond's been dealing with some heavy, too human to be fully realized Bond poo poo, and throughout Skyfall, he's mostly been one step behind. Then, James loving Bond, secret agent, picks up a needlessly awesome and totally conspicuous car with bizarre and tactically pointless gadgets and proceeds to kill tons of poor-attack-plan-henchmen. He is literally asked why he got this car from nowhere, and where he's going, and responds: "Into the past, where [Bond] has the advantage." This moment is the first time the complete Bond Theme plays in that film: when he gets inside that car. To me, Skyfall was a nearly perfect bow to all of us who loved Roger Moore Bond reruns as kids, but came of age as Brosnan Bond was getting real dumb and soulless. I got sick of Bond without realizing it as it kid, and just stopped watching until someone talked me into seeing some of the newer Craig stuff as an adult. Craig Bond gives us the same absurd world and silly tropes, with the occasional actual character, and substantive theme. I feel like the awesome spy folder Bond received at the end of Skyfall probably says "some weird poo poo happened to our station agent in Jamaica - go investigate Dr. No." He's earned back his status as unflappable super hero spy, and we all got to see HOW. loving awesome, in my book. That said - I enjoyed the podcast, and will keep listening/rewatching. I also agree that the old Scottish guy at House Bond seemed a little out of place (maybe an intended Connery Cameo?) - but old timee goofy Bond had bad sidekicks all the time, so, whatever - he shoots bad guys in cool ways. Does anyone know where I can get the Bond stinger sound? You know the "BAH NAH" that plays when he does something cool like the first shot in Skyfall. EDIT: Screw it, I'll just rip it from Skyfall. Unmature fucked around with this message at 03:33 on Jan 4, 2015 |

A lot of the enjoyment of this podcast is a product of the hosts -- and Gourley is especially good, and fun to listen to -- but it's pretty erratic schedule-wise. If you're really into Bond, there are a couple of other podcasts out there. One that I've found especially worthwhile to listen to is James Bond Radio (jamesbondradio.libsyn.com), which focuses on the films and the books, too. It started in February 2014, and there are now about 30 episodes available. I get it through downcast, so it can likely be found in all the usual places. There are a couple others, including an insane (older) one hosted at earth-2.net, but I'm not sure they're as quality.
