Agent Cain
Consequence: Damaged Sensors [-2]
FP: 3

Amateurs.

He groggily walks over to the downed biker, focusing as best he can on the situation.

"Somehow, I don't think your methods of coercion are going to work here. Good effort - but let me have a try."

He hoists the downed biker, holding the man by the collar about a foot off the ground and impassively staring into his eyes.

"Now, I want you to listen to me, and listen good. My name is Cain. And you, tovarisch, should be pissing your pants right around now. Now, my compatriots here are pretty nice people. You lucked out, though - I'm not exactly cut from the same cloth as them. I am...not so nice. And if you don't talk, I assure you I will show you why every single one of the stories you've heard about me are true. Every urban legend you've heard in your little safehouses. The man who killed a hundred Tagers. The man who single-handedly destroyed the Church of the Broken God. The man who killed Allegra Franzel and her pet monsters. The stories that make you quake in your goddamn boots about what would ever happen if the right people took an interest in your little games.

So tell me, little dog. What do the Grey Wolves want with us? And why, tovarisch, should I not march straight into Çatlı's little hidey-hole and paint its walls with his brains?"

His voice comes out as little more than a rasped growl. It's very clear that the cyborg has done this a few times before - and from the flat, emotionless affect to his boasts, every single word of them is likely true.

Provoking this guy, and invoking The Fifth Freedom to use SPOOKY SPY HISTORY!

Li Wu steps back into the scene, clutching her now-slightly-heavier satchel just casually enough that she'll notice if someone touches it.

"Hello again!" She says quietly enough to avoid killing the mood Cain set. "What did I miss..." she eyes the newcomer and the cat spirit. "Ah, hello there! Oh, zhè zhī māo zhēn kĕài! Where'd she come from?"

"Bikers tried to shoot us and take the cat ... person ... thing. Cain and Berry fixed it."

Maddy picks another splinter out of her hair and flicks it away.

"I think Berry was sent here as our backup, but she says she forgot the mission briefing already. I have no idea what's going on with the talking kitty - ask Shirona. Also, we should probably get going before the cops show up."

"She is Maou Rion, a cat spirit." Shirona repeats the name for Li Wu's sake. "I summoned her from the Dreamlands to help me with... something important."

Her eyes wander about the market, apprising the chaos they left in their wake. "Madeline is right, we should take this interrogation elsewhere."

The rider Cain has hold of holds up his hands defensively. "My boss just told me to get my crew and get the cat." His eyes shift back and forth rapidly, looking for a way out. "I - I overheard some stuff. Someone was paying for it. Look, I'll tell you what I know, but I'm just a soldier!"

Maou Rion preens at Li Wu's attention. "Finally, someone with some manners! You could learn from her," she says pointedly to Shirona."

Eymin pulls out his keyfob. "I'll get the van! But what about Mali?"

In the underground club, a big man with an impressive mustache and a shaved, tattooed head. Both of his eyes are old, obvious military 'ware, and he's got the slow deliberate movements that indicate extensive artificial muscle implants. He stops, legs shoulder width, hands clasped in front, and gives her a small nod.

"The lady requests a moment of your time," he says in a thick Central Asian accent, gesturing back towards the VIP section.

Greatly sorry for the long delay. I thought I was done with school stuff but I wasn't, and then family stuff grabbed me for a while.

Also, I don't want to completely ruin my outfit by being stuck in the van while you interrogate someone. You still owe me for that blouse you ruined the last time."

Sorry for the extremely long wait, real life stuff and writer's block hit me hard. I also realized I worked this plot into a corner I can't figure out how to get out of.

So I have come up with a plan, but won't have time to start it until Tuesday. It will involve a time skip.

I wanted to check and see who is still in. If you're done after that long layoff, I certainly understand.

After a move to a place where I at least have an outlet for other issues I was/am having, I should be good now. Depending on how stuff shakes up I might want to mix Berry around or change her out outright, but I still like hacking so I wouldn't be changing the niche I was grabbed for even if I wanted to do that. I like her base concept and love the idea of hardwiring her brain with pop music but she's also kind of just an unempathetic jerk who does what she wants in practice and that sorta kills it for me.

In order to get us out of this corner, I'm going to fast forward to after the current mission. You succeeded in recovering the Runestone, but not without some complications. This time, you get to tell me what happened.

Below, there are six general questions, an individual question for each of you, and a general question everyone should answer.

For the general questions, each of you should answer one and only one. Each of them should only be answered once. If you're working on a post for one of the general questions, I suggest making a post to reserve it, and then editing the answer into that post to avoid duplication of effort.

This is an opportunity to make things up and add new players to the situation! You can use NPCs or factions who have already shown up, ones from the general NTech background, or make up entirely new ones!

If you want to involve another PC or something from their background in your answer to a question, please check with the player first.

General Questions:
• Where did you find the stone? How did you get it out of there safely?
• What else did you find with the stone and why did it frighten you?
• Which faction fought to keep it from you?
• Who did you think was an enemy but turned out to be an ally?
• Who betrayed you, how did they do it, and why?
• Which of your allies did you have to anger in order to succeed?

Individual Questions:
Mali: You suffered a severe (not life threatening) injury, but gained something valuable in return. What is the injury, how did it happen, and what did you get?
Cain: Your training let you down at one point during this mission. What happened and how did you overcome it to change a disaster into a major success?
Madeline: You found out something about yourself that you weren't aware of before. What is it and how does it change things for you?
Li Wu: You found out something important that you can't share with anyone else yet. What is it, and why are you keeping it a secret?
Shirona: You found out something about someone else that they don't seem to know about. What is it and why haven't you told them yet? (Note: I wrote this with NPCs in mind, but you can work with another player to come up with something if they approve it.)
Berry Pop: You've finally found a team you mesh with. When you got back to HQ, however, someone from your past turned out to be part of the support unit for the team. Who are they, and is this a good thing or a bad thing?

Everyone: After you got back from this mission, you had one week off. How did you spend it?

After all that effort and research and insane motorcycle brawls in bazaars … the damned rock was in a sub-basement of the İstanbul Arkeoloji Müzeleri this whole time. The curators just lost track of it at some point, among the million-plus other artifacts in the museum collection. Records got lost, institutional memory inevitably faded and there it sat for who know how many decades, untouched, on a shelf next to dust-caked boxes of mosaic shards. Unreal.

Getting in and out with the stone was relatively simple with this team, once the stone had finally been located. Walk in with the rest of the tourists; slip off to a side gallery or the bathrooms and stroll into collection storage when the guards are on their lunch break. Or being bribed to look the other way. Same difference.
There were complications (so many complications) along the way, of course, but the basics were surprisingly straightforward. All in a day’s work for Madeline Knapp, Action Intern (and friends)!

Madeline spent the week of downtime unwinding – slept in late, went to a Red Sox game, studiously avoided reading anything resembling a book. Researching the runestone’s location in what seemed like a thousand dusty old archives had almost soured her on books, reading and printed material in general for life.

The vacation has also given her time to think about Violet’s steadily increasing appetite. Ever since they came back from Istanbul, Violet’s been getting hungrier and hungrier – to the point where Maddy’s getting worried about her food budget. The little monster’s been eating all kinds of stuff she’s normally not interested in, too – broccoli, ice cream (especially vanilla) and a trash can. Not the trash, though. Her appetite seems to be bleeding over, too. Maddy ate a whole extra-large pizza last night and still felt hungry. It’s worrying, but Maddy doesn’t really want to report it if it’s not a big deal. Last time she reported that Violet lost a baby tooth, the two of them spent two straight weeks in an isolation lab! Violet’s just hungry, it’s no big deal, right?

Right?

So, we did a buncha stuff and got a rock. Kinda missed the briefing on why but the important thing is that we got it! Had to keep quiet a few times since apparently sneaking in has to be silent and somebody wasn't being terribly helpful on that front. The museum had it locked up pretty tight but thiefy girl handled that pretty well, but once we were done and had the stone everyone else just wanted to drop everything and dart. It's like nobody at all was totally bothered by the super weird box the stone was being kept in, but when I went to pick it up it just scooted around for a while. After a bit of testing I found out it was somehow reacting to sound and was able to grab it up after putting my rig on mute for a regrettable few seconds. Something repelled by sound seems kinda weird, but it seems like it's more than just that: the material is somehow running sonic redundancies while at the same time decoding and deamplifying any sonic interaction, all without being powered or anything. I'm not sure if I'm more curious why someone would develop this or how it could possibly be a stable atomic structure, but it totally freaks me out.

Uh, right, anyways, rock and stuff. We got it and they're doing some kinda magicky stuff to it at base, I dunno, not my sorta thing. Seems to be extra important though because the big high ups aren't satisfied with just us dealing with this stuff. They pulled in a little mercenary unit, and every one of them is terribly familiar.

Rox Derringer, pointgirl for WASP Direct Force Involvement. WASP's super weird because it's not a PMC and it's not a security contractor, they're just a bunch of guns for hire medieval style and they so don't care about anything but getting their job done. They hired me for a bit back when my rig was still experimental and let me tell you, Rox is weird. You'd think with a business like hers she'd be totally money first highest bidder, all that junk, but once she's hired she's dead on totally nothin' but doing what she's charged with and super literal about it like those stories about genies. I totally don't get it, but unless she's changed she's probably trustworthy. Things just always get really weird around her, and this is me talking. Maybe don't ask her to do anything directly, y'know?

As for what I'm doing? Well, yesterday I got a concussion when my office somehow flipped upside down, so I've been padding that out and making sure there's not much for hard edges anymore. Doc says my brain's deteriorating fast if this kind of stuff is happening but he totally just says I have to shut down the rig and that's like telling someone to turn off their pacemaker or something! Not happening! I kinda need this! Okay fine maybe that's a little exaggeration but I'll be a hundred percent fine, I probably just tripped or something and just can't remember. So not important! That rock's what's important, you figure that out yet?

super late on this, sorry! I was initially waiting on someone's answer to piggy back off of, but I don't have a great excuse past that!

...Friendship? Again?
DEBRIEFING: Agent *REDACTED* Cain, OOI, performed by Foundation personnel.

It was that bastard Yildiz. He sold us out. To whom, I still haven't figured out. But they were waiting for us when we left the museum. When we were on our way back to the safehouse, they tried to hit us in transit.

Streets weren't even cleared or anything. They cut down so many civilians. So many bodies just laying there in the streets. I wasn't prepared for that. Not on this op - it was supposed to be a milk run. When it all went wrong so quick, you can bet your rear end I was in the thick of it. But when the smoke cleared and the bullets stopped flyin'...hell and damnation. Think we all got exposed to a little taste of hell that day.

But I'll tell ya right now - the one thing I saw that night, the one thing that DEVGRU and the OOI never prepared me for - an outright magical assault. From the inside of my head. You ever had every single doubt, every worst fear, every bad day, everything that's ever gone wrong in your life ripped out of your head and crammed down your throat with the feedback turned to 11?

Yeah, that happened. Every man down, every time I missed a holiday due to being on deployment, every fight I ever had with my wife, and that day. That loving day. The day it all changed and I stopped being who I was. All of it. On a loop. Jammed into my eyes and my ears. [NOTE: Redacted by order of Director Douglass.]

To be honest, I'm still not sure how I got out of it. With Li Wu nowhere to be seen, and Berry off doin' her own thing - which I'm still not even sure what her thing is, by the by - I had to take it.

I had to embrace my pain. My loss. All of it. Everything that ever hurt me, or took from me, or took from someone else. And I had to become it. I had to eat my sorrow. Every last loving bite. And then, the haze cleared. I could see again - sensors optimal, system status go, all of it. The team was flagging - all of us were looking pretty dire. We had wounded, missing - the whole nine yards of poo poo creek, and us without our handy mostly-metal paddle.

And that bastard Yildiz. With a gun to my head. A goddamn .900 Overkill - only thing that'll get through this thick skull of mine short of hi-ex. The hammer clicked, but he wasn't fast enough. Traitorous punk never could have been. I grabbed him by the neck, put him up against the nearest wall, and I looked that betraying sonofabitch dead in the face.

And when I asked him why? 'The omens will it. The city calls me.' And bubbling pitch starts streaming out of his face like it's a geyser of oil.

'Did I kill him?' Look at me. I mean it. LOOK. I'm a military-grade cyborg. State of the art technology, drat near a full body replacement, and trained as an anti-Mythos operative, a Navy SEAL, and an OOI retrieval and disposal specialist. What do you THINK I did?

After that? Well, I was pissed. Took the safety off, if you will. See, the team already thinks I'm some shadowy, trigger-happy supersoldier with more metal than flesh. I think they saw the rest of it that day. Once my head was clear, once I could think again, it didn't matter anymore. None of it mattered. Just the mission. I killed drat near every single one of those bastards. They had me out for most of the fight, according to the gaps in my sensors - something like 4 minutes, out of a six-minute engagement. And that's a long engagement - lot of hostiles, it was a miracle we held out as long as we did. But once I was back in the fight and stopped caring about things like 'not scaring the poo poo out of my teammates' and 'keeping my hands clean,' it ended real quick. Real. Quick.

'How do I feel?' Here's how I feel - I feel like we're done here. And since that's ALL, I have some R&R time I'd like to cash in.

END DEBRIEFING - subject left room, security personnel unable to apprehend due to risk of life and limb.

NOTE: Advise psychiatric counseling for Agent Cain. Debriefing indicates likelihood of post-traumatic stress following arcanotech-based mental attack. Also, why's his name still redacted? Isn't he with the Foundation now? - Eddie Greenbriar, debriefing interviewer
NOTE 2: Leave him be. He's fine - just tends to deal with grief in his own way, it's noted in his file. Previous note to be superseded. Also, further inquiries regarding the identity of Agent Cain are to be directed to Cain himself, and considered to be at one's own peril. If you don't know at this point, you're either not cleared to know or he doesn't want you to know. - Director Douglass

Personal Log, Agent *REDACTED* Cain, date *REDACTED*

It's been a week now. Haven't made a log since then. Been busy. Been calling in favors to anyone who'll listen - and there ain't many of those anymore.

Take Lilith, for example.

Met her for coffee the other day. Cold, rainy, the usual. Figures she'd have wanted to meet in Boston. I asked her some questions. I want to know where their graves are. I want to pay my respects. I'm not an operational asset anymore - at least, not one that's on the books. The least they can do is give me that. But she can't. Says it's "violating my operational security and presenting a bottleneck for a valuable asset."

Why does it matter? I'm not the OOI's tool anymore. I'm with the Foundation now. She can tell me, at the very least, where they buried my goddamn family. But she won't. And no one else will - none of my contacts are talking. Nobody's giving me anything.

Doesn't matter. I'll find out, one way or another. And I'll find out which organization was behind it. And then with, or without, the Foundation's backing, they're gonna pay.

In other news, picked up some new upgrades from the boys in R&D. Better legs, slightly lighter dermal plating, the good stuff. I've lost weight - I'm now a slim and svelte 365 pounds as opposed to 425 with the old subdermals. Still built like a brick shithouse, and still able to stop small-arms fire with my face. So I guess the team will still have some kind of use for me. That took a couple of days - lot of surgeries, lots of getting new connections wired into place.

Addendum - should I even make addendums to these logs? I need to talk to Mali and Maddy. The OOI won't give me anything. But this team - I like them. I trust them. It's not just dossiers and targets with them. There's a bond. Like the old DEVGRU days. Maybe they can help me find what I need. Maybe, if I'm lucky and they like me enough.

Also, uh...I managed to have some fun this week. Just thought it would be healthy to throw some good in with the bad.

End log.

NOTE: Can we get increased camera footage around Cain's room on the facilities? I understand that he doesn't have a place to live outside of here, and there are directives in place about placing surveillance in his room, but this prank war with the security personnel is getting out of hand. Itching powder and air horns are one thing, but a radio signal spoof? And comms terminal overrides? We had people standing on the roof watching for Godzilla for HOURS on Tuesday, and Delta-15 team is still convinced there's a ghost in the bathrooms on the 3rd floor. - Karla St. Germaine, Security Coordinator

NOTE 2: Request denied.
