if the best future is fighting over the scraps of a used-up whore of a world then maybe "how its always been done" or "this is how humans are!!" is not a real good way of approaching the problems we face. theres no real precedent for 7 billion people on earth with the ability to ruin it for everyone - not even through nuclear war but just by going along with the status quo

if the earth were a house, humans would be waiting until they actually saw a wall of flames engulfing their rooms before deciding that maybe jerking off instead of paying attention to that smell of smoke wasn't a good idea

aerial bombardment of cities used to be considered monstrous too, until everyone realized it is the best way to win wars then came nukes; now that everyone has them their use is beyond reproach the morality of surveillance of used to be more complicated too: protect our stuff and attack the other guy's then came tcp/ip, now that all communications infrastructure is the same, pervasive surveillance of other people's societies is ok right

expectations of privacy in personal communications is so naive, novo. what's actually wrong with the equivalent of opening every single unit of postage in the world, scanning it, resealing it, and sending it on? were just holding onto it. for purposes. no guarantee anyone will actually read it. do you feel comfortable yet?

To be fair, after WW2 it should be okay to spy on Germany for a century or so, just in case. It's fair that Germany be kept under surveillance by more responsible countries and also Russia, until the last Nazi lies dead
