so goons I was reading this pretty cool article about long-term love and it struck me while reading about Patrick and Doreen (like the 5th couple in the article) that I wouldn't know what to do if I had been diagnosed with alzheimer's. i was thinking that maybe ending my life would be better than letting my friends and relatives see my personality vanish piece by piece until I was nothing but a living husk of my former self. i would indeed probably prefer to die as myself (even if "being yourself" is absolutistic bullshit) but then killing myself would also hurt those around me tremendously, but they could probably get over that. it's much harder to get over someone who is still alive, just totally unresponsive. so what would you do, goons?

If I'm honest I didn't really read what you said op just the bit where you said you wanted to die and I thought yeah cool whatevs. I'm sure it's a really serious issue and I wish you luck finding a resolution to your moral dilemma.

think more like you getting frustrated that you can't remember the people you live with, and can't think of the name of your dead husband, or get angry that you can't figure out how to do some very basic things like tying your shoes. anything you've read about alzherimer's, the reality is worse.

Every time an old person dies the family is torn up but says "thank god, its about time, they were suffering anyway," etc etc. So yeah, euthanize me.

It's loving egocentric, selfish, and ignorant to think that Euthanasia is worse than neural degenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

My wife's grandma has alzheimer's but seems to have plateaued at a stage where she's basically living life as Drew Barrymore in that one Adam Sandler movie where she forgets from one day to the next.
However she's otherwise happy and healthy and she's always excited to meet people again and again, it's kinda weird but she doesn't appear to be suffering to terribly.

Anyway I probs won't make it that long anyway so no real worries.

Feel a bit bad now for wishing you dead without reading op so realpost now:

Life is a pretty cool thing. Alzheimers is a loving horrible thing and really painful a lot of times for relatives to have to go through. But it's a slow progression disease and you can live a good, happy life with it for a long time before becoming a 'burden'. I agree with assisted suicide when a person is in a lot of incurable pain, but when it's more that they're just a pain in the arse to look after I don't agree with. If a person is chronically upset/confused at late stages of alzheimers then assisted suicide might be merciful. But if there's any level of care that that person can get that means they don't have to be that way and can live in relative comfort and happiness then it would be a pretty disgusting idea to have them 'put down' just because it was expensive/impractical to provide that level of care. People are not pets and shouldn't be terminated just because they are an inconvenience.

I've had a few relatives get Alzheimers in their old age, and they are unaware they have it. They just forget stuff and live in the past and in fantasy a lot when they're not being introduced to their children or eating or pooping or indulging in some fun oldfolkshome singalong or whatever. I suppose forgetting so much would logically lead to living in fantasy/woolgathering/daydreaming/random memories a lot.

It has seemed to me that those people who are resentful types are not at all happy once they get the condition, whereas those who had non-resentful natures before contracting the disease are cheerful and fun to associate with even after its effects. I don't know whether any studies have been done on this.

So work on yourself now and you might end up happily singing 'Roll Out The Barrel' or some other funky song in your old age like an uncle of mine did while I happily pushed him round the oldfolkshome's grounds. Everyone loves happy social non-egotistical people, whether they can remember stuff well or not.
