who do you carry the torch for, my young man?
Her second album is really bad, the hip hop influence and production in the first one was what made her shtick unique and interesting. The second one is too tacky. Also gently caress the Black Keys.

I've been listening to a lot of italo disco and whatever the genre is where it's modern people but their music sounds like the 80s, as well.

Qapla' to a true warrior! :patriot:

I listened / looked up lyrics to about an hour's worth of her because of this thread. She's a cross between Mazzy Star and Catcher in the Rye. Gonna guess that "recreational" cocaine users adore her.

A bit yes, but I kind of like some Ellie Goulding. She did a good Alt-J cover. Is the new LDR album good? I haven't listened to it yet.

Their first album was reasonably ok, quite middle of the road but not awful.

Her music isn't nearly bad enough to explain the hatred of her I see all over the place. I guess she had a bad SNL but people were gleeful about that because they hated her already. I'm not saying she's the best thing ever but people hate her like people hate Bieber.

I dunno, the EDM remixes of her tracks are dope

Death Grips are really interesting in a bunch of ways. I enjoy them cause they're super weird and make me laugh/smile on the ride home from work but I also have to acknowledge that level of sonic creativity/absurdity isn't easy to achieve. And I get genuinely convinced that MC Ride or whoever has actual issues and it's fun to hear him lose control. There are a lot of cool sonic details and the songs work in strange ways beyond just "omg so weird".

To answer the OP: Lana Del Rey has a degree in Philosophy & Metaphysics. She is literally a genius; not because of the degree, but simply because she is. Her work (Tropico especially) deals with the fundamental Subject-Object problem and how to transcend it along a vertical, spiritual axis; ideas that are not appreciated in today's hypermaterialistic culture. The dehumanization of Woman as the eternal Other by the collective Subject is endemic.

And really, what other major label artist makes music like this in 2014?

So what exactly makes her a genius? Did she get that degree at 15 or something?
