"Darkwood is a unforgiving game about survival, exploration and fear set in mysterious woods somewhere in the territory of the Soviet Bloc. By blending RPG, roguelike and adventure elements together with a challenging difficulty, Darkwood aims to please players craving for a deep and rewarding experience." Darkwood is an in-development You have a top-down view of the action, with your character at the center. Moving the mouse rotates your character and his simulated field of view from his eyes, represented by a cone that spreads roughly 45 degrees. You cannot see 360 degrees around you (without special skills or items), objects such as items on the ground and enemies/NPCs are not visible unless they are within your field of vision, and the environment beyond your field of vision is darker and black-and-white. WASD controls the movements of your character. The mouse is used for interacting with the world and combat; for pretty much all weapons so far, you need to aim/wind them up by holding RMB, and fire/strike by clicking LMB. There is a small variety of melee and ranged weapons in this game, ranging from the terrifyingly inadequate plank with nails, to the mighty axe, to pistols and rifles, though a couple of the most powerful firearms are currently not available without cheating/exploiting or making a potentially game-breaking decision. One of the central features of this game is the day-night cycle. During the day, most of the map is lit well enough for you to go exploring for supplies or completing tasks, as well as allowing you to be somewhere near effective with regards to combat since visibility is higher. By the time night falls, you must return to you hideout to drink from a well to avoid "the thirst", a condition that will cause you to die if you fail to drink from the well. From there, the night is predictably dark and scary, with hostile monsters spawning and roving about. You would be best suited holing up in your hideout, which you can fortify by barricading doors and windows, and pushing wardrobes and/or other furniture objects in the way of the entrances. Typically, wandering about at night ends with the miserable death of your character as you fumble about in the darkness and are slaughtered by one or more angry beasts. When starting a new game, each world map is procedurally generated, with your hideout at the center each time. For example, a location that once may have been east of your hideout may now be in the southwest. The world map is currently a bit on the small side but there are about 12+ locations to visit and explore. Generally, these locations, once placed, have the same layout from playthrough to playthrough. You also have the option to enable permadeath in this game. There is a story in the game that can be followed by completing quests, but so far it is limited by the shortness of the game itself in its current state. There are a few different ways to go about some of them and can either cause or prevent combat, among other things. Having played this game a quite a few hours, I get the vibe of the STALKER series, but with more a focus on survival and horror as opposed to combat. The combat in this game can be difficult and your character is quite weak and woefully unprepared for combat at the beginning (and throughout) and thus you may find it wiser to run and hide than to stand and fight in most occasions. Compared to other current indie horror releases, this game seems less dependent on jumpscares and focuses more on creating anxious and panicky situations through a hostile and unpredictable environment. Neat, I remember voting for this in Greenlight. Based on the trailer, I'm quite pleased with the way it's turning out. Too bad I'm MBA-only right now

I love the atmosphere that the visual and sound design in Darkwood create. Especially the NPCs you encounter, they remind of the weird dudes you'd encounter in pathologic.

I agree, I think the sound is the awesome and necessary icing on the cake to this game. If you happened to have been a fan of System Shock 2, you may like this game for its sound effects. You and enemies make footstep noises, cause floorboards to creak, twigs to snap, and enemies will howl and growl in the distance or just on the other side of a doorway you're standing in front of - the nights wonderfully full of fear as you cower in your hideout. Also, sound can mean the difference between a dead enemy/quick escape or a horrible death here. Enemies can hear the sounds you make as well, and will respond accordingly.

Is there an ARG or something for this game? In the trailer I noticed this url: https://www.darkwoodgame.com/burek Trying the numbers 5681/5682 doesn't do anything for me.

So I'm in my hideout crafting and sorting poo poo out, morning just broke and all. I go to the oven to cook and i return to the main room I hole up in and start looking in the wardrobes. As I'm doing that, I hear movement from the direction of the oven - I exit the wardrobe screen and spin around and there is nothing - but the door to the room with the oven is closed. I know 100% I did not loving bother to close it behind me when I came back from the oven. There is nothing throughout the house as I run around with my shotgun out. Goddamn. What just happened? Does anyone else get that? e: goddammit i just heard a door open but from a direction that is nothing but outside the house VStraken fucked around with this message at 22:48 on Sep 23, 2014 |

This looks awesome. I'm quite looking forward to it leaving early access so I can check it out (I burn out on early access games too quickly so I tend to wait).

I picked this up and have been wavering between enjoying the fear and not enjoying the frustration. I think enjoying has the upper hand so far. I just met the vagina wall thing in the underground tunnel before my rear end got ran out of there and am vaguely keeping my head above water. Barely. Looking forwards to more unexpected and crippling deaths. And by head above water I mean I die about every night now but haven't turned permadeath on yet because god drat.

This game is really hard, but I'm enjoying the hell out of it. Someone told me you can game the nights by dragging a wardrobe with you into a corner but that's boring. That said I haven't found at all enough wood or nails to barricade anything but at least I found a plan for an oil lamp so I'm less reliant on the generator.
