I love Tom Cruise. I just don't buy anyone buying that he murdered the chick is all. Despite size issues, he was pretty true to the character. I don't remember if the "Drink your blood from my boot" line was from the book, but it's totally a thing Jack Reacher would say. He sold that poo poo. CelticPredator posted:I got over the size issue after the first few minutes, but then one scene happened and took me right out. In the book when the bad guy punches that girl so hard she dies, the cops blame it on Reacher because "Who else could've beaten someone to death with one punch...? Maybe the really big dude that just rolled into town." I figured they'd do a different excuse in the film, but they didn't. No matter what movie, I could never believe Tom Cruise could one hit punch anyone to death. I just watched this scene last night. One guy distracts her and another comes up from behind. The second guy sucker punches her, which as expected knocks her out, then he covers up her nose and mouth and suffocates her. She briefly wakes up to struggle but it was too late for her.

The scene where he gets the lawyer all flustered with his hot body was hilarious because of his weird lopsided pecs and grandpa body.

Just finished watching. Great, straightforward film. I love that the evil plan is investment in unneeded public works projects.

I think those kind of scenes worked(and are hilarious) because of the meta quality they have. There's no real reason why every woman Reacher meets should be immediately and uncontrollably attracted to him, but because its Tom Cruise it makes sense. Like, if your girlfriend has a crush on Tom Cruise it doesn't matter how many times you tell her that he's over 50 and doesn't look that great anymore. Tom Cruise is Tom Cruise and will always be Tom Cruise.

i dunno if i'd go so far as to call Jack Reacher meta but it's definitely a movie with a sense of humor about the kind of movie it is the one thing i'll ding it for is it's way too loving long for the kind of movie it is

The scene where he goes shirtless in the hotel room like he's Channig Tatum is weird, uncomfortable and funny because her reaction does not follow what we are seeing. I thought it was a vanity project when I saw it, but it's also possible Cruise has a great sense of humor about himself.

I think Edge of Tomorrow really shows he's aware of the "Tom Cruise" persona and willing to poke fun at it. Actually he was one of the reasons why the final movie had as much humor as it did.

To answer the OP's question: This is the most tea-party fantasy movie ever, so naturally the villain is a foreigner who's evil plan is literally to waste the governments money building public works that no one really needs. I'm not even joking. He's evil because he's foreign, and he builds unnecessary bridges and roads for profit. That's his evil plan.

I always thought Dominic Purcell would've made a perfect Reacher.

Alternately it's as much a joke about OORAH AMERICA movies as the books are and similarly is also a dead ringer for the real deal.

It's cheesy without being funny, it's serious without being able to be taken seriously, it gives you no reason to root for the main character or care about any of the events of the film. There's no reason to get emotionally invested as a viewer, and there's no element of the movie that is interesting enough to be intellectually engaging.
