Quick background: I'm 23, live in central FL in a rented room in an apartment. No family or friends to speak of here, girlfriend is 3 hours away and rest of family is in new england. My current job is a half hour highway commute, I work in support/development for an online tool company. My car was just totaled coming back from seeing my gf (Overheated even with full coolant, motor is busted) and will cost more to repair than replace the car. I figure I can maybe get 500-600 from a craigslist offer or a junkyard, and I have enough saved to get me through the next month and a half. My job will let me go by the 1st without a way to get to the office, even though I could work from home easily with it. I have a few years of college under my belt with decent grades, and my employment history is essentially this job for the past year, and retail management for 2 years prior. I'm open to anything I can do to keep things afloat at least temporarily. I'm looking for any kind of advice or suggestions that could help with short or long term work (Telecommuting would be ideal) or how to string out what I have left, if I should even stay here. Public transportation? Depending on where you live this is a viable option. It will most likely be super inconvenient (get up at 6:00 AM get home at 7:00 PM) because you will be at the mercy of the bus schedule, but it will definitely keep you going. Unless there's somewhere to work within walking distance or you can scrap together some money (personal loan, family loan, sell everything you own) it sounds like you're pretty screwed. There are a large number of jobs out there where telecommuting is a viable option, however you are at the mercy of your employer and most employers don't like people telecommuting more than a few days a week unless the job is specifically set up to be telecommuted or you're some exemplary employee they don't want to lose. Talk with your employer, look into getting a loan to buy a beater ($1500-$3000 car), find a job locally that you can walk/bike to, or look into public transportation are about your only options.

I just don't want to run into the same mistake I did buying this one, put myself into a bigger hole.. Bought it in April, put 500-600 in repairs in it thus far. I should have known better than to buy a used dodge with 150k and an engine knock (Didn't know what that was at the time), live and learn I guess. I'd love to land a job like that even at least 30 hours/wk telecommuting, that's where I'll start applying and calling. I'm borderline valuable here, that's why they gave me until the 1st, but no other options. Thanks for the reply

I'm not going to patronize you with the "this is why you need an emergency fund" speech... My buddy was a "work from home" rep for whoever Comcast contracts through for local support. It was a pretty okay gig at $10-$11 an hour and the only real requirements were: 1. Have a computer 2. Have stable internet access 3. Know how to google (or in this case internal wiki) problems I don't remember the name of the company, but you may be able to find it. Might work as a temporary holdover. Again, not trying to patronize you, but how much do you make at a job that is 30 minutes away? Are you even breaking even over minimum wage at a local burger flipping job?

But I've stuck to the budget and haven't spent anything extra past seeing the gf, I just don't make enough to save more than $100/mo, only $11/hr. Or did, at least. I plan on contacting/applying to everything I can think of that's related to my current position, and is easy to telecommute like that.

Treat your car guy well - beer, pizza, porno and more beer are good starts. Slipping them a few $20's here and there are also good ways to keep in their good graces. If they are a car guy, chances are they aren't a computer guy and you can trade your expertise for theirs. Have your car guy drive you over to that vehicle and let them inspect it before you test drive it. I know it's Florida and no AC is a serious suck factor but you have no money so you have to deal with lovely things for a while. Roll the windows down and let that muggy seaside air blast your face. If the car sounds decent and your car guy gives it a thumbs up then you buy the stupid thing and hope like hell that it runs for a year to give you time to save up for your next shitmobile. You should plan on buying them full tanks of gas, bringing donuts or other tasty breakfast treats and generally be a very grateful and courteous carpooler.
