Ah.. yeah... um... tup tup tup tup tup.. this is something we'll add down the line
Long story short, I've got to fly out to Brussels this afternoon for a couple days business. Any Brussels based Goons (or anyone who's been to Brussels tbh) care to offer some recommendations of good places to eat and drink. We're staying fairly centrally, so needs to be easy to reach.

Thanks!

Go to a mussels restaurant where you'll see local people queuing to get in. Do not go to fancy looking mussels restaurants dead in the center where waiters stand outside and try to get people in.

Stay away from the restaurants on rue des Bouchers, in the center. I lived for three months at a hotel nearby on Anspach at De Brouckere metro, and not once did I have a good meal on that pedestrian street. lovely, overpriced tourist restaurants - plastic models of the food, or menus in seven languages should scare you away. I'm not a big fan of Chez Leon, which is touted as a Brussels institution for moules-frites. Also be aware that anything on Grand'Place will have inflated prices, sometimes ridiculously so. It's worth the price of a drink or coffee for the view, but don't plan on having a special meal or getting hammered there. If it's late at night and you need an alcohol sponge, Anspach is packed with Turkish takeaways with pretty much identical menus.

For something completely different, go to the Porte de Namur area. It's a heavily Congolese neighborhood, with some fantastic live music.

So, here are some of my favorites, most of them near the center. I won't mention the obvious ones like Comme Chez Soi. (No means exhaustive - I lived very well in Brussels.)

Restaurants:

-La Roue d'Or: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d2422457-Reviews-La_Roue_d_Or-Brussels.html
Old-school Belgian, open late. They have a fantastic cassoulet that I still dream of.

-Kasbah: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d694682-Reviews-Kasbah-Brussels.html
Fancy Moroccan, full bar, very dark decor. Get one of the tajines and be happy.

-Arcadi: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d740569-Reviews-Arcadi-Brussels.html
Good for a budget, pasta dishes, quiches, etc. I preferred it for lunch rather than dinner, but it is open late. Stumbling distance from Galeries-Royales.

-La Quincaillerie: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d692031-Reviews-La_Quincaillerie-Brussels.html
This is a taxi trip from the center, down in Ixelles. Worth it for the decor - it's an old foundry.

-Como Como: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d784005-Reviews-Comocomo_brussels-Brussels.html
All-you-can eat tapas from a conveyor belt for a set price.

-Au Bon Bol: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d1056307-Reviews-Au_Bon_Bol-Brussels.html
Hole-in-the-wall Chinese place, cheap. They make artisinal noodles in the front window - be sure to opt for these, rather than the regular noodles. Upstairs is more spacious than downstairs. Order a glass of whiskey, they will fill a highball glass, and charge you for a single. (This is amazing in Europe - hopefully they haven't learned a proper measure yet.) Really, really good Chinese.

Bars: (You're best just wandering around and ducking into places at random. Brussels has a fantastic bar culture. Learn to love the beer.)

-A La Mort Subite: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d1019348-Reviews-A_La_Mort_Subite-Brussels.html
Very cool old-school Brussels institution for drinking.

-Cafe Kafka: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d694681-Reviews-Kafka-Brussels.html
Dive bar that often has live music. Packed with local hipsters.

-Delirium Village: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Attraction_Review-g188644-d570757-Reviews-Delirium-Brussels.html
I hesitate to mention this, because it is so obvious. Their beer selection is mind-boggling though, and I guarantee you'll wind up here more than once. It's full of tourists, but reasonably priced. Next door you'll find an absinthe bar and a tequila bar. Be careful outside, as there are LOTS of pickpockets hanging around. Good place to score hash.

-Au Bon Vieux Temps: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d2704030-Reviews-Au_Bon_Vieux_Temps-Brussels.html
This place probably hasn't been redecorated in centuries. A bit hard to find, but worth it.

-Mappa Mundo: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Restaurant_Review-g188644-d1124642-Reviews-Mappa_mundo-Brussels.html
English-Irish kind of place, friendly and has English breakfasts.
