So I was rereading these and it sort of struck me... are the Unfolders meant to be allegorical to books? So the war is a sort of "TV vs. Books" thing.

The Angels have a very strong thematic link to TV (and the remote mechsuits the US forces use have a very "video game" feel), but a few things about the Unfolders seemed like they might be meant as metaphors for traditional media:

"Unfolder" evokes a papery/origami structure
They are popular in the UK and Europe.
They seem to have a nonlinear relationship to time, in the same way that all the content of a book exists simultaneously and can be accessed at any time in any order.
