If you're the Japanese in WWII?

I can think of lots of things, none of them very nice.

This is my little alternate reality, so I'm going to say that this particular Imperial Japanese government isn't going for that sort of thing. If I can handwave fighter planes and warships into existence, I can handwave some of the really egregious war crimes out of it.

You bring up a really interesting point, though, which is that almost no wargame addresses these sorts of things, even when they had huge strategic implications (the Holocaust taking up so much railroad capacity and infrastructure generally, as an example - or Japan using Commonwealth POWs to build railroads in Burma). The Total War games giving you the choice to occupy, enslave or raze a captured city to the ground come to mind. STAVKA-OKH is a really great free game that embraces the moral aspects of the Eastern Front in a tasteful and engaging way, I think.

Then again, most people don't want to roleplay as Adolf Eichmann or Shiro Ishii, and the people who do shouldn't have the opportunity.

edit: Quick programming note! I have about 12 more turns left in my stockpile, and I haven't received any from Lord Windy in a while. I'm still hopeful that he'll have time for the game again in the future, but I need my WitP fix, so I'm starting another campaign with Samolety, a good dude I know from EUIV goons. We'll be LPing it using this thread and Windy's, I believe. I'm not entirely certain on the format but I suspect it'll be more flexible and less exhaustive than this game. We'll be using a new unique scenario, as well!

Turn 70: February 13, 1942

>>VIDEO REPLAY<< >>COMBAT REPORT<<

North Pacific

I finally get around to invading the Aleutians. This is actually a bit risky - I’m going in with no recon on the assumption that Lord Windy has been as lazy re: this theatre as I have been.

China

The Chinese launch an attack at Shanghai. It’s a little premature, and they suffer for it.

Malaya/Singapore

Resuming the raids. We’re still good on fighters, but our bomber force is looking a little thin.

DEI

Our Navy bombers from Palembang fly against the Dutch in Batavia. It’s not really worth the losses to flak.

Burma

A quick peek at this theatre reveals exactly why the Japanese were so gung-ho about building railroads here. The infrastructure’s a loving mess. It’s taking longer than I’d prefer just to occupy the country with no opposition.

New Guinea

The 4th Brigade begins landing at Port Moresby in the night, as cruisers Aso and Ibuki hammer the Australians with 20cm shells.

Ops Report Excerpt

We receive a nice wave of ground reinforcements today, including a full division at Cam Ranh.

The 6th Guards is packing up to join the army besieging Singapore.

Shanghai and Hankow are the spots most needing reinforcement, but the Chinese don't seem capable of actually capturing either place. I'll probably split the army up - I want to reinforce those places, but I wouldn't mind grabbing Nanyang as well, for instance. More on China in the next update!

That's definitely the kind of battle where you think long and hard about starting your own deliberate attacks.

Does the game use hexes to calculate distance, or just straight-line distance? It seems that planes use straight lines, but ships use hexes.

It uses hexes for both - it's just a quirk of how they wrote the game that in the combat replays, air strikes draw straight red lines from the origin to the target, while you instead see yellow hex highlights to denote a Task Force's path during the orders phase.

I've received the first turn from Samolety for our new game, and I believe he has started posting over in Windy's thread.

So! Doing something different (with this turn at least) - I'll be streaming December 7 and the following orders phase at twitch.tv/alikchi. I've got my mic going to commentate the whole way through, including the orders phase. Should be fun! The stream will be here at 3 PM CST (three hours from this post).

I'll be recording and taking screenshots for a more conventional LP post as well.

The first turn of a Gary Grigsby game is like a good sausage. Everyone likes the end product, nobody wants to see how it was made.

e: I'll probably have the stream on

Stream was a bust - apparently Sam and I had version mismatch issues and my orders got a bit messed up. And by "a bit", I mean "the KB decided to just chill out south of Midway instead of attack Pearl Harbor". :smith: So I'll be fixing the issue and sending an identical turn over to him ASAP.

In the meantime, expect an LP update for the Windy game tonight.

Hey, remember this LP?

War in the Pacific: Alikchi vs. Samolety
Turns 1-12: December 7-19, 1941

So, Samolety and I have begun our PBEM, with a tweaked version of the scenario Lord Windy and I were playing.

As promised, I streamed and recorded the first term. As predicted, it is long and boring. The video is here, but as opposed to watching the full hour, you might appreciate the Cliff’s Notes:

- Pearl Harbor was kind of a bust. Fog of war means I can’t be sure, but I think I only sunk 1 or 2 battleships, if that.
- Samolety wisely did not sortie Force Z to fight the Malaya invasion, instead sending them to temporary safety in the DEI.
- Troops landed on Wake but failed to take it in the first attack.
- Clark Field and the other airstrikes went well enough.

So - with that as our starting point, let’s catch up theatre-by-theatre.

China

Knowing that Sam has read my previous posts here versus Lord Windy, I decided to take a different strategy here. Instead of attacking in the north and running holding actions almost everywhere else, I’ve decided to hold in the north and try to advance in the center.

Sam has been very aggressive. I abandoned Ichang as an undefendable salient on December 7 - he quickly took it and then moved on Sinyang (1). The Japanese garrison there is desperately holding out for reinforcements, though outnumbered five to one.

My basic strategy right now is to try to save Sinyang, while also building up forces for a push on Chuhsien and Wenchow (2). Oh, and I took Hong Kong (3).

Philippines

Our invasions have been uniformly successful. The enemy on Luzon has retreated to Clark, leaving even Manila with only a token garrison. In the south, we’ve captured Jolo as an airbase and landed troops at Davao on Mindanao.

The US Navy has been very aggressive here, immediately sortieing its cruisers, destroyers and transports to evacuate Commonwealth troops from Hong Kong. They were largely successful (the depleted Hong Kong fell very quickly) but at a cost.

In the air, the initial successes over Clark have turned into stalemate. American B-17s have been evacuated to Singapore, while I leave the swarm of P-40s unmolested. As of December 19, I am beginning to assemble a fighter force that can outnumber and defeat the Americans over Clark.

Malaya

All going fairly well here. We’ve established a great airbase at Kota Bharu and the Allies are fleeing south from our troops, presumably to turn Singapore into a big annoying fortress. Our subs have done excellent work sinking transports and auxiliaries in the Strait of Malacca. I’m routing several divisions of reinforcements to Malaya to maintain the victory streak.

The aerial situation is pretty iffy. Sam has concentrated all his decent aircraft at Singapore, and the Spitfires in particular are quite effective at chewing up my poor Oscars. The probing attack featured above resulted in the loss of quite a few airframes. I may have to deploy my Secret Weapon here soon.

Still, he isn’t actually trying to contest the airspace over anywhere but Singapore itself, so I can’t really complain. My bombers are free to provide air support to the advancing Army troops while his stay grounded.

DEI

Now, this has been fairly interesting. I’ve been focusing mostly on the north coast of Borneo - my usual strategy here is to take Kuching and rapidly build it into an airbase capable of handling torpedo-armed Nells and Betties. With Zero escort, their range will allow me to dominate the Java Sea. Hopefully.

To the east, I’ve taken Manado and Ternate. I don’t have the aviation support units or base forces available to turn them into airfields, so they’re not actually that useful yet. No power projection. But they’re stepping stones. Tarakan, Ambon and Kendari are next.

This theatre has seen a decent amount of action - including our first and (so far) only carrier battle. Akagi and Kaga, covering our landings at Kuching on December 13th, spotted and attacked Force Z (with carrier HMS Indomitable attached) in the Java Sea. Our Vals scored a decent number of hits - but mostly with small bombs, and I received no messages indicating fires or critical damage. The Brits with their Sea Hurricanes also inflicted heavy losses on our aircraft.

The enemy is also bombing the oil installations at Miri with B-17s flying from Singapore, which is loving infuriating. I’m working on sending our prototype Tojos over to protect the place.

Central Pacific

December 19, and Wake Island is still contested. Despite naval bombardments, reinforcements, and two aerial bombardments by the entire Kido Butai, the Marines are still holding out.

Other Theatres

I’ll go into more detail as these come up in the following turns, but:

- We’re still marching through the jungle in Burma. I think there will be a fight for Moulmein and Rangoon.
- We’ve secured Tarawa and Kavieng and Shortlands. Rabaul should fall soon.
- American subs are a real nuisance around the Home Islands.

Aircraft losses have been relatively heavy, particularly in twin-engined bombers.

I think that’s it. I have a turn ready to play from Sam, so expect regular posting to resume from here on out!
