I'm starting the same mod with another goon this week. Looking at what windy has tried, and some of the tactics advised within this thread hopefully I won't make the same mistakes. I'll probably make new, worse, mistakes instead!

The Allies are the opposite of the Japanese, never short of pilots but desperately short of airframes until about late 1944. And this is why the loss of the Dutch squadrons is really no big deal. The game assumes they'll be gone in two months time anyway.
