Watching this video makes me sad that they didn't just do a graphical update to RO for RO2.

RO2 is great and all, but it will never reach the level of the original. The worst offense is the fact that they made bayonetting people super easy. It used to be such an achievement in RO to actually kill someone with the bayo. You had to be pinpoint accurate to actually stab someone and even then it took a couple of hit to get them.

Also they got rid of shooting guns out of peoples hands. most uncool.

I loved DoD. I played it competitively for awhile. Everyone loved the Garand or the BAR, but the Thompson and M1 Carbine. Those guns were my jam. I loved playing Ally Sgt. If we were playing a match, it was just assumed I was one of the guys pushing the line.

gently caress, I loved DoD, man.

Similar to DoD, the follow-up game wasn't as fun even though it had piles of new features.

At least for RO2 one of the bigger problems was making maps or new vehicles was much harder.

Idk Source brought a lot of cool stuff too, not limited to half-assed rehashes of awesome GoldSrc mods.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZXebEVAsR0

The old Battlefields also had a bunch of mods but not quite on the level of GoldSrc/Source.

Edit:

Also Insurgency is technically a sourcemod, which also happens to be the best tacticlol sperg shooter around these days.

Can we also talk about source mods too? Dystopia was really awesome. Cool concept that combined combat in the physical world as well as cyber stuff. So you had a set amount of time you could be in the cyber world and you could hack the other team's stuff which allowed access to rooms or whatever.

Battlegrounds was also awesome, don't know what you nerds are talking about. You probably just sucked at it. There was a WWI mod that was cool too but it didn't really work all that well. The maps were mostly featureless. Pretty much a big rectangle with a trench on either side and then you either pixel sniped someone through the fog or tried to run across the map and get pixel sniped.

Are there even any cool mods anymore? Or is everything moving towards making lovely clones of other games and selling them on steam?

whatever happened to that? I played the first beta(?) launch and it was really popular, then it died and dropped off a cliff with an incestuous community of like 50 people left.

anyways NS2 kinda sucked, but i guess it ended up being better than anyone could have expected given the circumstances. i probably sunk 800+ hours into NS over the course of 4+ years, and played cal-ns for awhile, but I couldnt even get myself to put in 40 hours into ns2. it's kind of sad that they couldn't capitalize on their initial hype and momentum and get a polished source-game out much earlier instead of spending years building an engine that still had worse netcode than source

It was fun if you didn't mind that like 3/4 of the playerbase were furries and the other 1/4 were under 12. My favorite map in that was secretcity2

for anyone that hadnt played sven coop it was basically playing usermade singleplayer half life maps with vastly varying quality and no consistency on servers that usually had far, far too many plugins which essentially added up to schizophrenic half life with 30 other people racing to break and kill everything in the map before you

sven co-op owned and im glad its still around in some form and may "come back" via steam

The Specialists was really my poo poo though. i spent hours playing on kung-fu duel servers. the melee combat system was surprisingly deep for a HL mod and there were a lot of neat kung-fu moves that were tricky to pull off. i remember the jump+crouch+right click flying kick thing did 40 damage, and there was a backwards kick that did like 75 damage but was really difficult to land successfully. if you hit one of those in a duel, you were basically guaranteed to win.

there were also roleplaying servers that had you killing HL grunts and poo poo to level up and fight duels

You're looking at it the wrong way. Greenlight early access is really what the devs need because development of a game takes so long and uses so many resources your average 1 or 2 person team can't hope to get anything out unless they early access it (or are a 24/7 cave troll)

Really its the natural selection progression of mods

I remember playing they hunger, great game, and actually quite scary for the time. A few others you didn't mention:

Front Line Force for hl1. It was one of the best looking hl1 mods and had some really nice features but sort of just faded away. Also the CS weapons mod for the original HL1 game. No Scope Awping headcrabs 420
