WORDS IN THE HEART
CANNOT BE TAKEN
Radaya stumbles in her panic, catching an elbow from a distressed merchant that knocks her in the cheek. Briarstaff nearly tramples a dwarf in his haste to get away, and gets a leaf full of horned helmet for his troubles. Velaka, for her part, loses control of her disguise for a moment and manages to scare an already-terrified civilian into letting out an ear-splitting scream.

"HIS FACE IS MELTING! WE'RE ALL GONNA DIE!"

Antillen catches Torrent's wrist as the hapless tailor runs straight away from Velaka and into a wall, helping her to her feet. She tries to pull away for a moment before snapping back to her senses. Along with Abdul, the group manages to push their way through the terrified crowd to the other side of the gate. Behind you, the rampart over the gate is on fire, with soldiers dashing up and down from the well carrying heavy buckets of water to douse the flames. In the far distance you can see the colossal statue of Emperor Coaltongue that marks the center of Gate Pass, with the depository tower that is your destination much closer. There's a line of flames slashed across the district, leading from the gate to almost the next district wall as thatched houses ignite.

Rolls for Thayet: 18 on the Will save and 11 on the Reflex, which isn't enough to avoid damage. Radaya and Velaka both manage to get a 1 on the 1d6 nonlethal damage though, which is frankly kind of amazing. The crowd very gently tramples you in its panic.

Brushing yourselves down, you continue onwards through the burning city. People pour out of their homes, some burning, some not, making their way along with you to the east. The streets are wider here, wide enough for people to move without the frantic crowd near the gate, and the crowd moves in a strange daze as you push your way through them.

Not everyone was fast or lucky enough to get out of the way. One man cradles a small package in one hand, letting a badly burned arm flop loosely to his side. Torrent steps over to him and exchanges a few words with him, pulling out her wand, but the man says something emphatic and nods to the package. Torrent pokes her face in to see, her face going white as she gently extends a hand to touch something inside the wrapped cloth package as she shakes her head sadly. The man turns away, stonefaced, and heads back down a side alley as Torrent rejoins the group, looking just as dejected as the crowds around you.

A block and a half from the depository tower, a four-story townhouse is burning brightly against the night sky. A small crowd is gathered around the base, running water from a nearby well in a bucket line, but it doesn't seem to be having much effect. As you near, a window smashes outwards and a woman's voice calls down to the street.

"Help! I'm trapped!"

Torrent looks up at the building, then down the street to the depository, but still seems shaken from before and simply crosses her arms as she hunches in on herself.

The Paladin quickly moved in to action. He knew how to deal with falls from heights, it was a risk when you worked with wyverns and he had picked up the trick from his family before he had left for the temple. As he began to rummage in his pack he told Torrent; "Grab a corner and doth aid me to spread this out." As he retrieved his tent from his bag his voice was calm and collected, but held the tone of authority that would not take no for an answer. Antillen got the attention of Briarstaff and Khamag, choosing to leave out Abdul because of his smaller stature. "All of you hold this canvas firmly and doth step back three paces until the canvas is taut. Dare not let go less you imperil the lady further."

Abdul

It is handy the noble fellow overlooked Abdul, because the little fellow is soon overlooking him. Bugger that, he thinks to himself. "I doth hath a climb speed, Mox!" he cries as he scoots up the building. He is halfway up before he wonders what the gently caress he is doing. Hanging around with Briarstaff was getting to him. He was so surprised he doesn't mention the dragon at all.

"Sod that!" Khamag shouts, even as he grabs his end of the cloth with one hand. With his other hand he points to the sky, just beyond the ramparts, at a dragon rising into the air, fearsome wings beating with furious energy. "I think I found out where the attack is coming from!"

THat snaps Abdul back. "Oh yeah, that," he adds almost unthinkingly. "There's a dragon about. Doth thou speakest dragon, there, Mox?" He continues to scramble up, scramble like.

Radaya Venadril

"You go and deal with the attackers! I'll take care of her." Radaya turns to the woman and smiles. "You remember me, Mena. I delivered your cousin's child, and I watched over you during your fever last winter. Jump, and I will keep you safe. Jump!" Radaya holds her hands out, and a gust of wind collects behind her, blowing out her hair and swirling around her robes. As Mena jumps, the gust rushes towards her, slowing her down and lowering her safely to the ground.

(Radaya casts feather fall on Mena as she jumps.)

WORDS IN THE HEART

At Radaya's urging Mena steps onto the windowsill, obviously still nervous but trusting in her friend. High above, a squadron of Gate Pass Gryphon Riders fly from the east, lances outstretched as they fly to the defense of the city. The three forward riders fix their lances and dive towards the enormous black dragon circling above the ramparts, disappearing from view as they cross behind the burning building, while two of the other riders hang behind and draw bows.

Mena gulps, obviously nervous, and looks down at the taut canvas. It is... very far. Really, surprisingly far. And the canvas makes a surprisingly small target at that distance.

There's a sudden gust of wind that makes the flames in the burning building gutter, shaking it violently. Mena loses her grip on the windowsill and falls, tumbling slowly through the air as Radaya's feather fall catches her. Something solid connects with the building, causing the upper floor to collapse, and suddenly the dragon is flying directly over the street. Unlike before, it makes no sound beyond the flapping of its wings.

It's truly enormous. Bigger than the tavern. Bigger than the burning townhouse. It might even be bigger than the eighty-foot or so tower that is your destination. It's mouth opens, giving a brief glimpse of teeth and the burning embers of its throat, before it extends it's powerful neck and bites one of the remaining gryphons and its rider. Although perhaps "bites" is the wrong word. "Swallows whole" might be more accurate. It rolls with frankly terrifying grace and neatly swipes the other gryphon out of the sky with a contemptuous slap of its tail, sending them spinning off into the fiery night as it continues eastward, its long tail passing out of view last.

Mena misses the canvas by about four feet because of the feather fall, coming up looking considerably greener than usual but unharmed as Radaya helps her to her feet. Torrent, who managed to miss the whole thing while staring down at her feet and thinking dark thoughts, comes back to herself. "Come on, we've got to get going. There's only going to be more of this if we can't find a way to get help, and to do that we need to go meet our contact. We're not far."

Antillen Mox

It was undeniably a dragon, that much Antillen could not argue with. It was black, which meant it was unlikely to be of Coaltongue's brood for that was gold or so all described it as. While he knew little of the offspring of dragons, or of dragons in general, he did assume that the colourings would probably pass down like wyverns did, which would suggest that this was not a hatchling of it either. That they had found another dragon and bound it to their will, or allied with it was concerning given the almost feral nature of it. He suppressed a shudder and began to pick up the tent quickly. As he packed it, he began to move and simply responded to Khamag. "Thy time is ample if thou has luxury to waste it upon wagging thine tongue." Which although delivered in his same calm and smoky voice was the sternest he had spoken to any of the group's knowledge. Except perhaps for Briarstaff who had seen him lock up criminals and miscreants.

WORDS IN THE HEART

The group hurries down towards the depository tower, the crowds thinning around you as you go. The depository building is tall and imposing, the gray stone of its construction reflecting the fires of the district around it. Instead of streaming towards its apparent safety as you might expect, the crowd seems to be heading diverting eastward towards the gate to the next district. It's made of stone, and easily eighty feet tall, a somewhat unfortunate feature that also makes it plainly visible from the western wall of the city and beyond. And, quite possibly, a target.

The guards standing outside look nervous but professional. They start to tense at the sight of the large group heading towards them, but relax fractionally when one of them sees the familiar form of Abdul. The guards confer and, after a short whispered conversation, open the gates and usher you inside.

The interior of the compound is filled with a small garden in the space between the exterior fence and the tower itself. It's nothing too fancy, but it gives some space for the guards to patrol the exterior. The heavy gate clangs shut behind you as one of the guards, a tough-looking human, ambles over with a torch in his hand.

"Hell of a night. Did you see that great beast earlier? We were worried it might clip the top of the tower, but it headed away instead." He shakes his head. "We've been instructed not to let anyone in except customers, but there've been a few groups in here already and we're not about to turn anyone away, at least not if they have anyone who has business here with them. I'm not sure you can all fit into your locker, Abdul, but if you want to try I'm not about to stop you." He tries to give a broad wink to the group, but the effort is fairly feeble. He gestures towards the tower, and the two large iron doors at the base of it. "Come on, then, let's get you inside."

Abdul is all nods and smiles with the crew. He liked those guys. Good times. "Good place, this," he says as they amble through by explaination to the others. "Strong walls, decent coffee. I hole up here some times when," he looks at Briarstaff and pauses, seeming to reconsider something. "When the weather is bad. Angry weather can't get through those walls or guards, and my locker is pretty cozy all things considered." Finally he turns to the guard, laughing. "Not today, Otto. Gotta pick up some gear. You know how it is. Fuckin' dragons around, I need my gear, you know what I mean?"

For the moment Antillen did not speak, but waited to see if other members of the group more aware of cloak and daggers diplomacy might speak up and seek out their contact. For his part, he remained diplomatically silent at the comment of dragons for more than one reason, and looked around to see if he could spot a Gnome matching Rivereye's description. With a name like "Badgerface" he assumed the person would be fairly notable.

After a few minutes of no one mentioning anything, Antillen spoke up. "Our party doth seeketh to discuss a matter with one Gnome by the name of Rivereye Badgerface. If one of thee might be able to direct us to his location we would be most appreciative for thine aid."

The guard scratches his chin thoughtfully as he works the complicated door lock with his other hand, entering the passcode to allow the group can enter. "Badgerface, eh? There is a gnome who came by here a while ago. Powerfully ugly." He grunts as he tugs the door open, revealing a circular room with a high stone ceiling beyond. "There's a few guards inside too, so make sure you don't accidentally find yourself in the wrong locker." The guard gives Abdul a look. "Go on, then. I've got to get back to the gate."

After you enter, he closes the door behind you with a resounding clang. The first floor is one huge room, with the far side dimly light by a few sparse lanterns. A broad stone ramp circles upwards clockwide to the left of the door, and the interior of the room is filled with aisles of metal lockers. Each of the lockers is taller than a large man, but the ones on this floor are each fairly thin. The ceiling is twenty feet high, supported by squat round columns spaced regularly between the lockers.

A few moments after you enter, a ugly little gnome starts walking down the stairs. He's hunched, pug-faced and wearing dirty blue robes which he uses to wipe his runny nose with as he coughs. "drat this cold. drat the roads, drat the cold, drat the sneezing..."

Abdul: Your locker is on the second floor, and a bit larger than the ones here. What's in it? And that's not a gnome. He's hunched to hide it, but the way he's moving means his balance is off - some kind of a disguise.

The Paladin looks intently at the gnome for a little while, until it is possibly becoming a little awkward. While he was watching, perhaps someone else would mention the case that Badgerface was supposed to be in possession of. Maybe Torrent. Who knows. The dragonborn certainly would once he was finished if no one else had.

Using Detect Evil on the gnome. As it's a spell like ability there's not funny words or gestures needed, just a reeaaaalllly awkward stare for 6-18 seconds.

The gnome makes his way to the bottom of the group, coughing into his sleeve and scanning the group. His eyes pass over the strange dragon man who is staring directly at him and he sneezes. His gaze lingers on Torrent, and he hesitates for a moment, before turning back around and waving the group to follow him. "Come on, Peppin. It's upstairs."

Torrent looks at the group and shrugs, looking confused.

Briarstaff

Briarstaff leans over and puts a leafy hand over his mouth, letting his words flower into the... uh, earholes? of his Dragonborn companion. "Don't stare, I hear that is where gnomes hide their fancy machines. When my country was getting conquered, I saw an elf lean over a gnome. His coat exploded, he had about ten metal arms under there. Only six were holding weapons. I'll leave the rest to your imagination." Briarstaff follows, but keeps his eyes pointedly away from the Gnome's hunch, not wanting to ending up in a salad five hundred feet below the surface of the earth.

Antillen smiled wanly and decided not to take Briarstaff's words as truth, for they smacked of friendly jest and an impossible fantasy.. "Nay. It is said thou mayst take a measure of a man from a single gaze. From mine god thou I hath been bequeathed a gift to gaze beyond the sight of everyday men and women and to take a measure of the goodness of a person's soul. Our party may proceed knowing he harbours not vile darkness within his heart. Surely thou has seen me do so before, or didst thou thinketh I overly strange and fascinated by the appearance of lawbreakers and troublemakers?" The Paladin finished his response with a small chuckle.

Abdul's locker doesn't have much in it. The dragonborn flexed his wings for a moment as explanation for his point, then began to chase up the stairs as well.

On the other hand if Antillen can manage to cut off 'Badgerface' he'd do that, but scale mail has a 10ft movement penalty so I'm not confident on that front.

Otherwise the plan is to get to the third floor balcony and glide off to catch Badgereye if he escapes the group's grasp.
