I have no idea why this game didn't catch on more. Gimbal was initially released a while back independently (it's the work of pretty much one dude) and late 2013 it found its way to Steam.

What Is This Thing?

Gimbal is a 2d top down shootygame. You build a ship / aircraft thing buy selecting a hull and then adding all sorts of weapons, thrusters, airfoils, projectile repulsing fields, harpoon guns, bolt drivers, mine launchers, nuclear missiles, and so on. You can place turrets that you can attach weapons, thrusters, platforms, ect to. You can completely control how the ship is piloted - You can make something that just uses fore and aft maneuvering thrusters to move around, or you could use airfoils and rudders, thrusters on turret mounts, weapon recoil, impulse thrusters, gyroscopes, or any combination of the above! The builder is very open ended. Ships are imported and exported as .pngs, so they are very easy to share.

The game is pretty much entirely multiplayer. There are team deathmatch, ffa, ctf, and race game modes. The only bad thing about this game is a lack of playerbase. For some reason it never caught on.

The physics model is pretty neat. It's set in upper atmosphere, so there is still aero drag. You can do a lot to change how the ship you designed handles.

Recently the game got an update that removed the $6000 trillion build cap and let you build server crashing monstrosities.

The creator of the game recently started a Ship of the Week video series.

You can edit the game files to skip the leveling process if you want

Did I mention this game actually has a stealth system too?
