The highlight of the series (IMO seasons 2 to 9) was when the show's Baby Boomer generation writers had the most influence. During this period these guys were in that creative stage of their live where they were most capable (not too young, not too old, etc.) Conan O'Brien, who penned two of the best episodes, was among the younger Baby Boomers who wrote for the show. In fact, the town of Springfield makes a lot more sense when you consider it as a throwback to the sort of towns the show's baby boomer writers grew up in, and lots of boomer nostalgia gave the show a special sort of sensibility that was cloaked by modern pop culture references but was nonetheless always discernible. They should have cancelled the show when those dudes (especially the ones who remember the 60s) ran out of things to say.

Joyous.
Anytime someone says The Simpsons sucks or something I instantly think of "Lisa's Wedding" and ""22 Short Films About Springfield". To me it's not even a question of "good" or "bad"; what you catch on Fox now is just not the same show.
