One thing that often doesn't get mentioned is that Japan was about to be gripped by an unbelievable food shortage. The different islands of Japan were almost completely cut off from each other by Allied submarines and mines, and the mainland of Honshuu imported a considerable amount of its foodstuffs. It also relied almost exclusively on coal from Hokkaido for heating, and that was also utterly strangled. So had Japan not surrendered when they did, an insane number of people would have frozen or starved to death. Well, that's my GBS effortpost for the month, toodles
