Alex, the Mind Altering Government Scientists, or Old Man Singing in the Rain?
And can you say that any are actually worse than the others?

The Horseman. It's a pretty grim revenge tail that's all about the futility of revenge, it's been a awhile but I remember it being pretty good. Not to be confused with Horsemen starring Dennis Quaid or Bojack Horseman starring a talking horse.

Brazil: "Love Conquers All" edit

The Good guy in this context is Terry Gilliam, the edit was ordered by a movie exec and gives loving BRAZIL a happy ending, which is very much the director losing. Fortunately the proper version with the bad end got a full and proper release and everyone was happy

There are hundreds of 80's horror or scifi flicks had that 'The bad thing is still alive/everything is still hosed' style ending as well.

On that exact note I would suggest The Thing. It's also a loving brilliant movie.
