If you must blink, do it now.
Greetings friend.

Welcome to ADTRW, your Something Awful subforum of choice for posting about anime and manga without getting banned on the spot. Incredible. I guess they'll just let anyone have a subforum.

Whether your deal is spergin' out over Chinese cartoons or writing your thesis on punchman Shintoism, this is the ghetto honeypot place for you! If you're new to the wonderful and only occasionally terrifying world of Japanese pop 2D entertainment, consider our handy dandy FAQ. It's very thorough and only slightly out of date. While you're at it, feel free to peruse our civilian owned and operated wiki for a fine selection of titles to start with.

If you'd like to get in touch with me regarding any issues, questions, or suggestions you may have, my contact information is in my profile. PMs are also accepted.

THE RULES

1. The same forum rules that apply everywhere else apply here

2. Don't link to licensed stuff
Support the official release! I'm willing to make exceptions for ongoing manga threads and anything super duper old that's fallen between the cracks, but otherwise if it's commercially available where you live then don't link to sites, streams, downloads, or torrents for it. Thanks!

3. Don't post unfunny low content OPs
Not every new thread needs to be a novel but please put some effort into it.

4. Don't post porn or erotica
Keep it in your pants.

5. Don't be a creep

6. Don't take it personally; don't make it personal
Sometimes people on the Internet make fun of each other. That's cool, be cool. Sometimes people dredge up personal baggage and harass one another. That is substantially less cool. Don't do it!

7. Do use spoiler tags; don't whine about getting spoiled
Sometimes characters die or turn out to be evil or actually one dude with multiple personalities. Please do not spoil recent and/or significant developments in the series you follow. Thanks! In the event that you are spoiled, a single, short post calling them out and hitting the report button should be sufficient for dealing with the situation. Please do not go on and on about how you were really excited for the reveal and now it's ruined forever. Thanks!

Posting spoilers for currently airing/publishing series may result in a probation, depending on severity. Posting spoilers for series that have finished is more likely to result in a warning. Anything over five years old should not typically require spoiler tags to talk about.

8. If you post lolicon or shotacon I will ban you

SOME POSTING GUIDELINES

Do have fun!
Unlike many subforums, we here at ADTRW feel it is okay to enjoy our dedicated hobby. Post as you will, in whatever form that might take, but post "From the heart." A modest, genuine post is always better than a snarky, disingenuous one. Snark is okay though. It's the disingenuous bit that gets me.

Do use the report button!
I am but one man adrift in a sea of shitposts. I read a lot of threads, but I can't be everywhere. If you see a problematic post, report it! I am pretty good about keeping tabs on these things. That said...

Don't abuse the report button!
Don't report posts merely for being low effort, missing some punctuation, or being made by that guy you don't like.

If you must blink, do it now.
Was gonna include this update awhile ago but I got busy and forgot about it because I am bad at my job.

SOME IMAGE GUIDELINES

Use [timg] tags!
Please [timg] tag any post containing more than five large images as well as any single image that would otherwise break the site's tables. This one's more of a courtesy rule than anything, so if you break it once in a blue moon I'll probably just edit it with minimal fuss, but if I find myself repeatedly having to edit your posts I'll probably slap you with a six-hour [timg] tax.

You may post table-breaking images at full size in the chat thread but if they crash anyone's browser you'll be eating a sixer.

Remote link :nws: content!
Sometimes you wanna post a picture that doesn't violate the "No porn, no erotica" rule but maybe contains nudity or something (or I guess gratuitous violence). Link it with a warning and you're more or less good to go. Should I decide any given image you've posted is over the line or in poor taste, I'll be far more likely to simply quietly remove it if it's been properly marked than take any disciplinary action. That said, as with the rule concerning [timg] tags, if I find anybody abusing this you'll likely be punished for it.

If you must blink, do it now.
Hey my people.

It's been over a year since I accepted this position, and in that time I've become better aware what the needs of this subforum are, and how I have either succeeded or failed to meet those needs. As such, I've decided it's time to refurbish the rules governing our fair threads.

The "New" rules will not be radically different from the existing ones, though some things will be tweaked, tightened, or relaxed. The main purpose behind this restructuring is increasing clarity and transparency. It should never be a mystery why I am probating you, or why I've asked you to stop doing something, or why I'm redirecting or closing or gassing a thread. No one, upon reading the rules, should find themselves accidentally breaking them, or beholden to mysterious and/or arbitary standards of posting.

The new rules should be up and ready to go by September 1st, next Thursday, at the absolute latest September 2nd, Friday, since real life decided to throw an unrelated, last-minute monkey wrench at my head. Odds are they'll go up sooner lol. If you would like to comment on the existing state of the subforum, either with your own suggestions or comments on the rules, general observations, or even administrative criticisms, feel free to contact me by email (my address is in my profile) or PM.

And please, keep enjoying anime.

EDIT: Fixed dat typo.

DOUBLE EDIT: "I can't believe Bad Seafood would set a timetable for himself and miss oh wait-

Now that the new rules are up (two days late lol), here's a changelog of what's different for those of you who don't feel like reading into things:
  1. Self-loathing nerd culture and being weird about Japan are now more actively discouraged.
  2. The rules governing fan translations have been relaxed.
  3. The punishment for posting porn has been clarified; the punishment for posting lolicon and shotacon has been upgraded from a ban to a perma.
  4. Various bad behaviors have been better defined.
  5. Low-effort OPs are now permitted but will live or die based on how they turn out.
  6. Stillborn threads will no longer be gassed simply for being inactive.
  7. The rules governing spoilers have been tweaked.
Hope this helps.
