Hej min vän, hur står det till?
I just listened to Kevin McCarthy speak and he has the same semantic coherence of a Miss America contestant, and he also seems to believe there's a country called Hungria.

If the Republicans put this guy up for speakership, it's going to be amazing.

So tripling the expense of judges and time needed to try criminal cases . Does not seems practical.

On the other hand it would make for immense savings by obviating the arduous jury selection process. You're basically pulling dozens of people out from their work day for each case to sit in a room waiting to be called.

What the gently caress do you think this is feudal Japan? Are we weighting testimony's truth based on social standing?

A claim without any physical evidence to support it at all should be worthless in the courtroom. Especially when they guy making the claim did so as part of a deal to avoid being executed for the crime he committed. It's bad enough that cops can have their claims treated as actual evidence but no, when a murderer says something and there's nothing to substantiate it then that claim should be little better than hearsay.

Like if that guy's self-serving claims are enough to convict someone of murder those jurors were a lost cause because that's such a low bar it's loving terrifying.

Trabisnikof posted:

Why do you assume the jury got to know this fact?

They almost certainly didn't because it'd completely undermine whatever shred of credibility those claims had. Having to divulge that information should be 100% mandatory though because when you're buying someone's statement that absolutely affects their credibility.

What happens when Darren Wilson gets a 75% white jury in a 67% black city? Jury selection is already highly corrupt.

His defense team demands a new trial unless the other 25% are cops or family of cops.

I'm holding off on a larger news roundup since I need to have stuff for next month's OP, but some weather models are predicting that Hurricane Joaquin, which has strengthened dramatically in the past 12 hours, may hit North Carolina in the vicinity of Camp Lejeune and New Bern as a Cat 5 or strong Cat 4 on Sunday, so you might wanna brace yourselves for the inevitable comparisons that call it Obama's Katrina.

Of course the cone is wide at this point so it could hit anywhere between the South Carolina border and Rhode Island. Both posters on the Eastern Seaboard and armchair political analysts should be keeping tabs on the storm.

Per weather.com, it's only supposed to be a Cat 2 storm when it makes landfall and will not come close to Cat 5 at any point. Where are you getting this information?

Under the CAA only - other laws still apply.

Off the top of my head I would go for 18 USC 1001.

That's why I said some models. It's not the consensus forecast. The Weatherpocalypse thread in SAL is a good resource for this.

Basically all that can be said at this point is that it's looking about as unpredictable and potentially dangerous as Sandy did, with the consensus prediction tending towards a more southerly hit strike up the Chesapeake with a big, but low-category storm, just like Sandy.

We should hire actors to watch the original trials and then act out trials for juries using stenographer's reports as their scripts.

Of course! I didn't mean to insult all of you NWS folks by calling the Weatherpocalypse thread the be-all-and-end-all; it's just a starting point, since it has some of the better analysis and discussion I've seen outside of NWS Forecast Discussion products and can easily get deeper into the nitty gritty. Keep up the good work, SirPablo and all the rest of you at the NWS! :patriot:
