Clinton: VA problems not as bad as GOP suggests Democratic presidential hopeful Hillary Clinton said problems within the Veterans Affairs Department have “not been as widespread as it has been made out to be” and blamed Republicans for politicizing the agency in a TV interview Friday night. In her first extended comments on veterans since joining the White House race, Clinton told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow that she believes problems within the VA still are being fixed too slowly, and reiterated her plans for a “SWAT team” of experts to find aggressive ways to address those shortcomings. “Bring in people and just tackle (it) ... have an ongoing review of the care that is being given, do more to make sure that every VA hospital is delivering care to the highest standard of the community,” Clinton said. “Because, unfortunately, some are doing a lot better job than others are.” But she also lashed out at Republicans for “ideological assaults on basic fundamental services, whether it's the VA, Medicare, Social Security,” blaming them for exaggerating the VA's problems in pursuit of their real goal: privatization and elimination of VA services. http://www.militarytimes.com/story/veterans/2015/10/26/clinton-va-scandals/74618360/ A new report reveals that the shameful saga of the Veterans Affairs hospital in Phoenix lives on. The latest report’s findings are, again, appalling. The Department of Veterans Affairs inspector general went back for a second look at the Phoenix facility that in 2013 was at the center of a national scandal about phony wait times and falsification of records that allowed staff there to actually collect bonuses. The new report found the urology department of the hospital was providing inadequate and unacceptable levels of patient attention — we refuse to call it care — to veterans. It found that some bladder and prostate cancer patients died while waiting for what should have been basic care and that medical treatment for almost 1,500 others was delayed because of woeful mismanagement. Mind you, we are not just talking about 2013 here. This was as recent as April of this year when the urology department was faced with a critical shortage of personnel because of the departure of doctors and nurse practitioners from it. Call us idealists if you will, but our solution to such a crisis might have been to find an alternate means of care while we addressed the personnel issue. But apparently the brass at this hospital thinks differently. http://www.timesheraldonline.com/article/NH/20151022/NEWS/151029951 VA spent $6.3 million on sculptures and fountains for their hospitals. Should they have? https://www.washingtonpost.com/news...ould-they-have/
