in 1980 there were a little over 9,000 known asteroids.
In 2014 there were over 600,000 known asteroids.

Not hard at all. 600,000 might sound like a lot but they are spread out across an area many billions of times greater than the Earth. It is more likely that you would collide with a giraffe while driving to the shops than it is that you'd collide with an asteroid while travelling through the belt.

I watched it in fullscreen HD and I was surprised how much NASA can do on a cut budget. We should cut it even more.
