However, did you know that Grohl was in a band before he was in Foo Fighters? He played the drums. You've probably never heard of it, though, so nevermind.

Not very obscure at this point, but I have a small obsession with SOPHIE. He annoys most people I play it for, but I'm just happy that eurodance is starting to sneak its way back into music again.

Workers (formerly Your Black Star). Their typical albums go through a bunch of different types of rock influences on a song-by-song basis, so there's usually something to like. Their self-titled from 2009 was their best, but drat if I can find the whole thing streaming anywhere. Their newest one isn't my favorite of theirs but it still has a good amount of variety (the cock-rock first song isn't at all typical of the rest of it). 伏羲 (Fu Xi) are a Chinese folk/doom metal band I randomly happened upon in a recommendations list. They go from mellow folky stuff to much heavier by the end of this track. Full album here. sticklefifer has a new favorite as of 09:34 on Nov 23, 2015 |

Saw Holy Grail a few years back when they were opening for GWAR. They do the Judas Priest/good 80's metal better than just about anyone I can think of. Immortal Man - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pw-Z1YbMJak Fast as a Shark - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FNuOqaQ9MXk

A friend of mine introduced me to James Warner Prophecies last week. They're pretty good, sort of a pop rock sound with a good singer. My tastes are.......decidedly not mainstream or typical/everyone's cup of tea. One of my favorite things is bizarre obscure prog from the 70's like Second Hand. I bought a reissue of this on a lark once several years ago & it ended up being one of the greatest vinyl purchases I've made. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K1Mme5BCkf0

Lots of cool stuff here, that Bent Knee stuff was awesome. That said, I never grew out of my indie/ska/punk bullshit phase. Some fairly obscure favorites of mine are Streetlight Manifesto https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOFkcj4iDvM&list=PL8_OaZ9dAao6DHJ7d48FM7lEj1DO24Rhr or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtzUT_XvVTgand and the Interrupters https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7Ol-YDS4Jc

I'd have to go with Miracle Legion, a band formed by singer Mark Mulcahy and guitarist Ray Neal in 1983. Okay, so they may not be the most obscure, as they seemed to float just underneath the surface of commercial success throughout their career. They had videos in MTV rotation throughout the 1980s, signed to a major record label in the early 90s, had an album produced by John Porter (who has worked with The Smiths, etc), and even made an appearance on David Letterman. However, Morgan Creek, the aformentioned major label that they were briefly signed to, folded shortly after the release of their first and last major label album. It ended up where the band couldn't release any new material for years afterwards. After independently putting out one more album in the mid-90s, the band called it quits, with singer Mulcahy going on to eke out a solo career (highly recommended as well) Here is one of their most well known songs, The Backyard, off of their 1984 EP of the same name. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZ78AZhzIoU A few years later, in 1989, they put out Me & Mr. Ray, my personal favorite by them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OqNGk0VRL3k Here is their Letterman performance from 1992. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S3tdbkvDAw8

Not exactly obscure since they're actually signed to a record label and all that, but Royal Thunder is awesome. I saw them opening for Valient Thorr a few years ago. I got to the show late and walked in halfway through their set. Nobody was there, and those who were weren't paying any attention to them, but they were still just loving crushing it, playing like a million people were watching. And Jesus Christ, why hasn't anyone else started a band that sounds like a crossover between Heart and Black Sabbath before??!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E0r2d5xPFOo

Dermis Tatu is my favorite Venezuelan band (I'm actually from Venezuela, not a super hipster that chose a random country to follow its musical scene). Here's their full album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pluoey0eZwk An off-shoot of a kinda-popular underground pop-rock band, Sentimiento Muerto, they never got big, even in Venezuela. The lyrics are pretty good if you understand Spanish. If you don't understand Spanish then they might sound like gibberish. Another Venezuelan alt-rock band I enjoy that actually sing in English: The Asbestos https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JB2Fgv3TPYo and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nyMXsn4iCk4&t=80s .
