2 orthogonal base states: <dead catte> or <live catte>. these are the 2 possible states you could get if you measure the qubit.

the wavefunction of the qubit is represented by a superposition of the base states, like (3/5)<dead> + (4/5)<alive>. there's an infinite number of valid superpositions, so the wavefunction of the qubit has an infinite number of possible states.

the result of a qubit measurement is physically random, but the 2 states are not equally likely. the coefficients in the wavefunction determine the probability of measuring the respective states. the wavefunction itself follows deterministic evolution, so you can set up quantum computations to give you a wavefunction that overwhelmingly favors measuring the correct answer.

8 bits in a byte

largest number represent able by unsigned chars is 2^(# of bits)-1

that's why a byte, 8 bits, can hold any value up to 255

this gets trickier because different setups use different word sizes and so on

you see, when you compress a number, you turn more of its bits in to ones, which are narrow and stack up next to each other better allowing you to fit more in the same amount of space.
