I live on the coast of British Columbia now. I do miss the north, I grew up there so what seems strange about it to other people seems normal to me and I miss those differences. But I have a wife and a kid now, and moving back would probably be a non-starter. If you didn't grow up there it can be hard to adjust. Some people love it though - depends on your personality.

Not Inuit - whitey white white. But I grew up with some inuit friends and visited some pretty isolated communities when I was young.Cambridge Bay, Tuktayuktuk and a few others.

At least in the 80s (dating myself), Yellowknife was racist towards natives, pretty much like the rest of Canada is racist towards natives. Most people assumed that a native guy was either an alcoholic or untrustworthy. That perception could be changed on an individual basis but it was an uphill battle.

If you're curious - some examples of how the Inuit have been hosed over the past years:
1930 - 1950 Change in migration of caribou and collapse of fur prices across the world result in widespread starvation in inuit communities. Canadian government begins program of relocation. Inuit families moved from Northern Quebec (crappy, but not horrible) to Ellsmere and Cornwallis Island (this is literally the furthest north you can go). In some cases, families not allowed to leave new locations. Stated reason for relocation: better hunting grounds. Real reason? Having wards of the Canadian state that far north makes it easier to argue that area belongs to Canada in case of any claims by Russia or the US.

1900- 1950 (or so): Canadian Indian Residential School system. Educational system set up and funded by the government but run by missionaries and religious orders whose stated goal is to "Christianize as well as civilize". Not surprisingly, this is a horrible idea and doubly so for the high arctic as children are sent even further away from their families to enjoy such civilized wonders as sexual and physical abuse at the hands of their teachers and enforced physical labour to keep the schools themselves in working order.

It's true that it's a challenging environment and that many of those students need supports most teachers can't provide effectively or efficiently, or both. It's not true that the entire group is unteachable, it's also probably not true that an unteachable group exists (I imagine most of his students were verbal, could walk, could navigate their social spaces, etc, all things that prove that at some point they were taught something somehow by somebody). It could just be a group that he can't teach, which is fine but that's his problem, not theirs. It's pretty understandable that his students were probably uninterested in the intricacies of the fur trade or long division or whatever he was required to teach and that's a problem everywhere you have students who fall outside the increasingly narrowly defined norm for whom curricula are designed.

I don't think it's ableist to say that I can't teach students with blindness, but it is ableist to say that students with blindness can't be taught.

I live in the second largest city in my state and it's still smaller than Yellowknife by about four thousand people. Reading about it kind of makes me want to move there but I got a DUI a few years ago so now I'm basically banned from Canada unless I become like a doctor or something else important.

it's almost like the problem is systemic and not really the teacher's or the kids fault. and maybe instantly dismissing the problems as being solely on the teacher for not doing his/her job is actually just making the problem worse by not acknowledging the fact that there is a problem, and that having a teen suicide rate FIVE TO SIX TIMES THE NATIONAL AVERAGE is actually a symptom of a totally hosed up issue.

I work in youth corrections and deal with 99% aboriginal youth, most of which have FASD or other serious mental issues. It's not their fault that their lives are lovely, it's the decades of abuse that Aboriginals have suffered that is the root cause of pretty much all these issues. To put the blame on the victims for not rising above these lovely situations is pretty much textbook racism
