Ein cooler Typ posted:my friend is trying to scam the USPS lawrence gilchrist easily claims first helpful answer. the answer is Media Mail as a class is not closed against inspection. Thus, our local post office and (in theory) a few others have been opening virtually all incoming and outgoing Media Mail

Protip: Buy a cheap DVD and put the birthday card inside the DVD, fooling the postal inspectors.

Getting 'caught' for cheesing media mail basically just means the person getting your scambox pays the difference, which they usually don't do, and if they send it back, you pay full price for them to return it

I think that they probably would not go to the trouble of inspecting a single package, I can't believe that they would care if you had a letter hidden amongst a stack of books. I think that they would probably inspect something that was a large commercial shipment, or many large commercial shipments, made to save money. But I don't know. You should try it and find out.

People do it all the loving time. It's a pretty low rent scam though. Not something I'd brag about. Unless you're mailing a pallet of bricks, there's probably a flat rate Priority Box that's reasonably priced. Priority is insured and only takes like 1-3 days for delivery. Media mail can take up to two weeks and they beat the poo poo out those packages, probably just to spite people who mail anything valuable that way.

I feel that shipping stuff through the USPS is reasonably priced so I don't really think its worth it to try and scam them. Also media mail is slow as balls.

They have the right to inspect it, and they will. And then they can do with it basically as they please, if they choose to hand it right back to you, you pay for it. I have been sending out a lot of porno comics by media mail and it's funny how many folk report that it had been subject to inspection (i.e. opened) prior to arrival.

I had a letter inside a box of Christmas presents and the USPS employee kindly informed me that I would need to pay postage for it and I agreed to doing so and she ended up not charging me for postage anyway.

They still use horses to deliver media mail so I also just use media mail to keep those horses employed. I'm afraid if I stop using media mail the horses will be sent to the Elmer's Retirement home.

Three of the four cubic foot boxes I sent with books in them via media mail got smashed open destroying or losing what was inside. These were brand new good boxes that I taped up really well.
