Yes, all the doodads inside the cabin are useless, but stuffing computers into the engine has been an objectively good thing.

Oh sure, my car is almost 40 years old and it has computers in the engine. It only gets driven in summer but it handles snow like it was made for it (it was), but I don't want to expose it to more salt. Thanks to rust proofing it's weathered 34 years of salt well though.

The computer system is actually very reliable which is ironic since it's a Lucas system, but I rate it above the Bosch ECUs that other models got. It's also possible to upgrade this to trionic 5.5 and go distributorless and flex-fuel.

I really think cars peaked in the 90s, that's when tech, feeling, durability and all that came together. Since then it feels like most advances have been co-opted by the need to extract more money each time, which has made each advance also a con. But it wouldn't have to be so. But those are the incentives...

I don't remember when I was taught the word syntax, but I remember how it's supposed to work.

Much like teaching children their state capitals, they tend to only remember a few, but at least they know that every state has a capital.

Sorry, but in what language is "syntax" one of the first words a child learns? I've taught elementary and syntax is definitely not on any Grade 1-6 wordlist I've ever seen.

I’m assuming English, since syntax is an English word.

That said, I’ve just conducted a poll of two kindergarteners and 0% of them know the word “syntax”

It's this.

https://gs.statcounter.com/browser-market-share/mobile/united-states-of-america

In the U.S., Safari accounts for 53% of all mobile devices. 40% of all tablets. But only 14% of desktop.

Going worldwide though Safari is only 24% of mobile devices and 9% of desktops.

Even just going to Europe alone, Safari is only 28% of mobile.

iOS usage is not as ubiquitous outside the U.S.

Can confirm. I have an old Dell Latitude laptop loaner that's been kicking around forever. I marked it haunted, oh, 8 years ago, marked a pentagram on an inside cover since then continues to chug right along. I loan it to friends who blow up their computers, they can never seem to kill it.

Re: Tesla update, from the sound of it they're doing the equivilent of like, when your computer needs to update Windows so it locks down the system to run the Windows update while nothing is in use. Just from a top-of-my-head thought process, there'd be an easy way to handle that (and here's where I embarrass myself in front of all the yosposters): have a hot backup. A system that can take over and handle the functions of the car (at least some basic stuff like windows and doors, if you have to have doors be software controlled (you don't)) while the main system updates. It'd be a handful of bucks for a second SoaC and some flash storage, but would prevent stories about, say, your car broiling someone alive because they needed to add new fart noises or brakes or whatever the gently caress Tesla updates.

Yes, they could be like other cars and not have the infotainment system also run the car but that's not disruptive.
Also the front door could be opened at anytime with the manual release if the electronic handle didn't respond. The person didn't even try, because the whole thing was bait from an influencer trying to get in on the bad Tesla press.

I feel silly for asking, but why in the actual gently caress would an OTA update, while applying (presumably having already downloaded the update in advance but this is Tesla so who knows???) take 4 minutes, let alone 40, to actually run?

I know for real cars, software updates can take a while because the internal connection is slow as it isn't built for large file transfers.

Help me do my homework. I'm working on a stock pitch for Meta.

Every single bank has it as a "Buy", only one or two as a "Hold".

Being a contrarian would be fun for class, any real reason as to why their stock could collapse in the next 24 months?

Only thing i can see is some out of nowhere privacy legislation in the EU or the US. I don't see the US lawsuit to roll back Instagram and Whatsapp as viable. Other antitrust complains are possible I guess. Doesn't matter if Trump or Biden win, I think both govs would be willing to go after them.

AR is not going anywhere soon, but everyone knows that already, it's an implicit long term bet.

Outside of a larger, market-wide collapse, I don't see anything on the horizon. There is always the potential for another major privacy breach or similar, but those aren't predictable.

I assume meta follows the general tech stock market and that seems to be trending up hence all the buy recommendations right now. If meta specifically goes down while the rest of the tech stocks go up then yea it’s probably some one off unpredictable event like privacy or antitrust legislation.

I suppose there could be some mass migration away from social media or all content creators adopt new ways of making money like subscriptions, but those are trends that I think take longer than 24 months to play out.

Recent research suggests (https://bfi.uchicago.edu/working-paper/2023-131/) that people actually have negative utility from social media, that is they consider themselves to be worse off with it than without it, and are only there because they need it to connect to others on it, who themselves are only there for the same reason.

The 2024 election is going to see a huge amount of controversial content online which facebook and other social media has demonstrated it is utterly unable to manage. Facebook's issues in 2016, in terms of calls to violence/misinformation/dumb poo poo, will be even worse and they'll face more scrutiny which may make unrelated scandals come to the surface.

Meta also won't have a buffer from low interest rates, so if they experience issues with advertisers or their user base they might have a feedback loop as people leave because more people are leaving. They've already had to scale back on a lot of metaverse stuff they were hoping to get long-term growth from.

Meta is vulnerable to a huge controversy damaging their reputation or leading to significant anti-privacy legislation in either the US or EU. Their situation can snowball very quickly from the 2024 election, or really any other scandal, especially since they're a popular bipartisan punching bag.

There's a lot of things that can go wrong.
