I went to Kansai Gaidai as well and I'm super glad I didn't do the homestay option. For every person that told me they liked their family, one took her on a trip to a private hot springs resort, three others had terrible situations.
What was it about the homestay families that made them terrible? I assumed that the placement agency would conduct interviews and/or have some kind of feedback or complaint process in place to weed out crazy families like the OP's.

There are some details on these, including costs

From what I remember about the form, Poop Cupcake, it was pretty basic. Name, Age, Sex, Religion, small section for Interests but there wasn't much intelligence done at KGU at least to match it up. I don't regret homestay itself, everyone else seemed to have lovely families.

I think it was a mixture of: "conservative upper class Japanese salaryman meets drunk 20yo" meaning culture clash was bound to happen on one side or another, and the fact that more people wanted home stay than there were families available in the area, so even a lovely family might be ok'd so another student could have a home stay.

Don't you just hate when you wind up in a store with people who are in a socioeconomic class that is pretty obviously about two levels lower than your own?

But that would involve criticizing such fine, upstanding citizens. The vetting process probably involves filling out forms and not having obvious criminal ties. And in Japan, anyone volunteering to invite an inferior foreigner into their home is already a little suspect.

Also at least half of the students that go there are hyper otaku that go crazy when Japan isn't like ~my anime~.

The normal foreign students and Japanese students were all great though.

yeah when i studied in japan there were a bunch of kids that just stayed in their rooms watching anime and playing wow. it was real hosed up. my host family was really normal other than having a bathroom (complete with a urinal!) completely decked out in playboy gear. the host dad was a professor of american studies though, so i guess they were probably pretty used to weird rear end americans.

Don't look at me!

I'm glad that I ended up going to Japan much later in life, because while I'm still a dumb hyper otaku, the most surprising thing about being in Japan for me was how gray the urban areas are and how many awesome little hole in the wall shops and restaurants there are. And heck, I still can't get over how streamlined and on-point the rail system is. I can't imagine how ridiculous I would have been visiting in, say, high school.

My first exposure to Japan was when I did a summer homestay for a couple of months instead of going full-on exchange student. On the one hand, I had a proselytizing host sister (Soka Gakkai). On the other hand, she had zero problems taking me to bars. Aside from having to go to like a couple of hours of overly simple and boring Japanese language school each day with a group of other gaijin kids, I was basically just wandering all over Okayama doing whatever the hell I wanted. I had no problems buying porn, alcohol, lighters, woodcarving knives, fireworks, etc. It was chill as gently caress, and I got away with far more than I should have, but I never caused anyone any problems, and was polite to a fault to everyone I met.

I guess I called it with the whole summer thing, or just got lucky not to catch a family with more serious issues than reciting the lotus sutra every night.
