A Jeep appears! It's a 94, 133K, and in fair shape. The engine is super strong, and the clutch feels like it was just put in 10K ago. Everything works with the exception of the flashers - the hazards will turn on but without blinking. Also the tires that are on it are way too big and rub on the fenders, so those are getting replaced as soon as I get plates tomorrow. There, rehosted on imgur. A 5-speed 2-door XJ with seemingly no gaping rust holes? You bastard.

Pretty jealous, that's the colour I want. How closely did you inspect the B-pillars for rust? All of the 2-doors here are one good door slam away from no longer having a roof.

Zero rust, perfect welds. Going to register it in a few, then I'm gonna see if anyone in town has stock size tires for it.

That's a good looking XJ.

I hate you. Rust free 2dr 5speed XJ. Unheard of around here.

Ok, installed a cat (didn't have one) and got a new gas cap, so now it passes smog. It's at Big O now getting a set of 235s on it to not rub the fenders and also not be dry rotted. When I was under it for the cat, I noticed a couple of things from me driving it around. There's a leak at I think the main seal which is running back on the trans a bit, but it's not too bad. I'll note oil loss and see what the deal is. Also, above the front t case, there's some sort of super thick vacuum tube torn in half and hanging down in the prop shaft. No idea but I tucked it up out of the way.

Sounds like a vent tube, no biggie.

90s azure turquoise blue will always be my favourite colour. Around here the only xjs have 6-10 inch lifts, enormous tires and held together solely by skill of the fabricator that resurrected it from rust hell.

Some better tires, no more rubbing, and she's finding herself right at home on the daily commute!

I am disgusted at how much nicer shape that is in than my '99 was. Stupid states that salt the roads.

I still haven't fixed the seat - all avenues on that appear closed except for finding an interior specialist shop and having them fix the thing. Until then, I've gotten used to reclining. One weird thing is going on, though - sometimes, even with the light switch off, the headlights will stay on after turning off the ignition and leaving the car. No amount of dicking with the switch fixes it, but if I turn the ignition on and off again, they shut down. I have no idea at all. I'm really falling in love with it, though, especially when I have to mud bog to get to work.

My '91 did the exact same thing, and I believe it was a sticky/hosed up headlights relay. E: reading up on it, it was an early chryco attempt at delayed-shutoff headlights, that has a ~2 min on-time relay that likes to fail into the stuck on position. EE: looks like the silver relay in this pic: spookykid fucked around with this message at 03:24 on Dec 2, 2016 |

Nice, thanks. I'll mend that while I'm servicing it this weekend (assuming the fever and lung crud I have goes away).

The weather has been interesting lately out here. Lots of rain, causing new lakes to appear on my commute that weren't there the day before: Sometimes the rain turns to snow, making the neighbors come out to play: And the traffic keeps getting worse, even when it's dry: Today, however, I was pulling a pretty good hill and noticed a bunch of smoke behind me. When I stopped to check, I found my hatch and hitch all covered with oil, and a pretty major leak happening on the passenger rear side of the block. I got home to Reno (another 60 miles) and cleaned it up, and I can't really tell much (nor get a good photo). I just serviced the car on Sunday, and maybe the oil cap was a bit loose - there was some pooled oil around the cap. Could also be the distributor seal or the oil filter seal, I suppose. It's cleaned up as good as I could with paper towels in the snow this evening, and I'm hoping to drive it a bit tonight to see if any spots in particular get more wet than they are now. Anyway I dropped about a quart since Sunday. Any thoughts on likelihood of any of those, or levels of "should I care"?

I decided it was the oil cap, since not much got messy when I drove it around today, but I did get more oil pooling on top of the valve cover. I like $3 fixes.

Got towed home last week when my alternator took a poo poo. This weekend I discovered that this alternator is the most complicated piece of poo poo procedure to change of all the alternators I've ever changed. No wonder everyone started driving Japanese in the 90s.

Engine and alternator have been running great! Just piling on the miles. But then I got this sickening vibration on the highway... Oh.

The jeep needs to spend some time chilling in the garage - new rear main seal, etc. In the meantime I picked up another commuter.
