This is, sadly, more important to me than bettering myself.

It's been over a month since the last post. Has all the DLC for the game dropped? Anyone who owns it care to do a postmortem for said DLC if so?

New side story mission just dropped the other day, along with a new PvP game mode. A few more side missions are coming, along with two more characters.

The story mission is good. I didn't know I needed Attikus: Hard-boiled Private Eye in my life, but oh boy did I.

This one isn't their fault. The game's perfectly good. If Overwatch didn't exist it'd be a smash hit.

I don't think it's fair to pin the blame on blizzard/overwatch. The game wasn't exactly promoted or marketed well, or priced where it should have been. That's on 2K.

That might be fair as well. My main point is this wasn't a Colonial Marines situation. Gearbox made a fine game here.

Blizzard bought massive amounts of ads with noncompete clauses and scheduled open betas and announcements after Battleborn making sure it overlaps. This is normal blizzard marketing 101 since the days of vanilla wow. Mind you I agree 2k should have been better, but blizzards marketing is infamous for doing poo poo like this to get the competition buried. I am not sure there was much 2k could have done, releasing late would have had internet nerds screaming the game couldn't compete and is not worth it. 2k may have shot themselves in the foot but blizzards marketing put one between the eyes to make sure the job was done.

Don't get me wrong I don't dislike blizzard, I played the hell out of wow, star craft, war craft and all that. Blizzard makes good* games.(* Like d2 and d3 initial release is not always a shiny star but the will polish and patch till it is and that is ok)

I think the Overwatch Betas just hammered BattleBorn into submission. I was checking BattleBorn Twitch streams and within a day they were almost wiped out after the first OW Beta showed up. The whole Beta access with Pre-order thing pushed OW ahead as well.

I mean I think if anything Paladins is really whats going to put it in the ground. Releasing so close to Overwatch was a huge mistake and screwed them over royally but if they actually ran with some kind of semi-F2P model I could see it having a strong resurgence if they priced the "unlock everything pack" (or whatever they'd call it) it to move with the Steam winter sale. I think now that Paladins is out and getting positive buzz Battleborn is basically hosed, along with that Battlerite is also mopping up a lot of the competetive Moba types that would have populated this game on Steam.

Battleborn really should have been a hit. It's a pretty unique feeling game with high production values and a really cool Warcraft meets Oddworld art aesthetic, it's accessible for both extremely skilled FPS/Moba players and also your friend who played TF2 one time at a LAN five years ago. But 2K just blindly released it into the worst possible market they could have, releasing up against Overwatch and Battlerite and then having the Paladins beta roll out at the end just cut them off at the knees, there's only so many fast paced twitchy character based arena games people can play or care about.

Battleborn is not a bad game at all but the game is designed to be played with others. The story mode is designed to be played co-op and only half the roster can put in a decent showing on story missions when playing solo. Similarly, the bots on pvp mode are useless and it's not uncommon to see half of them stuck on geometry or pickup spawns.

Neither of these would be a problem if there was a decent player base, but they're pulling less concurrent players than Showering With Your Dad. Outside of the US or Europe it's even worse - there's about twenty people left in Australia playing the game and despite running a discord server to organise queueing, they can go days without having enough people around to play a game.

Even with all this, playing the story mode with a character that can solo it and dicking around with the pvp maps can be fun. It's just a bit sad because it's evident that it's a solid game that would be great if anyone actually played it.

Disappointing but not surprising, I heard the population was pretty low. Right now I just plan on going through the story mode by myself and then hoping I can find some decent games in PvP mode. I've seen a small number of people streaming it and it takes them a while to find games, but they do find them so I guess I'll just put on some netflix while I'm in the queue or something.

Wouldn't be surprised if Battleborn goes Free to Play on PC within the next 6 months to a year, and similarly get itself released as a Xbox Live Gold/PS+ free title as well, that's pretty much the only way I can see them salvaging the game at this rate

Not that it matters, they basically patched out everything fun about the game by this point, at least on PS4

Newbie report:

I played the prologue and then the first mission. Game's actually super fun, though Rath may not have been the best choice cuz I barely beat ISIC's stupid loving floating head because I had a hard time hitting him.

I suppose the game's main problems are that it just released at a bad time and Overwatch ate its lunch, and allowing people to buy characters via microtransaction while the game cost $60, instead of giving them all to you at once or unlocking them via gameplay was a very bad choice. Perhaps even the co-op/single player campaign worked against them because I know for a fact there are people who didn't know this is a MOBA-hybrid, or that there was even a story mode.

Regardless I'm digging it so far

e: Apparently you can't buy characters via microtransactions, I am wrong

PAM PA RAM

PAM PAM PARAAAAM!

So, from what I gather... this is mostly a first person MOBA? And it's not really a viable game to play by yourself against bots?

And yet, I recall hearing things about dungeon raids, bosses, and loot or something along those lines way back during its initial announcements... which doesn't strike me as very MOBA-esque... along with apparently pretty fast paced combat too with enemies that don't take forever to kill.

I'm eyeballing it cause I can possibly pick it up for under 10 bucks as something to jump in and kill some time shooting cartoony mooks for 20 minutes at a time or so.

So I bought the game when it was on sale a couple weeks ago, and it IS an FPS-MOBA hybrid.

There are 8 story missions that you can play solo or with up to 4 other players, and you'll level up your account, the individual characters, and get loot from this. The loot goes into loadouts, each loadout containing three pieces, and you pick a loadout before you start a PvE mission OR PvP match and unlock the items with currency acquired during the level/match. During a level or match each character starts at level 1 and can get up to level 10 (this is unrelated to the level of the character on your account, I'm not sure how best to explain it if this is unclear). As you level in a match/level, you get a choice of one of two passive bonuses at each level.

Levelling your account unlocks new characters, inventory spaces, and loadout slots, and gives you loot packs. Levelling characters (on your account, not during matches) can unlock skins, taunts, and new passive bonuses for this character.

PvE multiplayer is the story missions, and PvP multiplayer is a couple of different game modes, which includes control point matches, standard style MOBA matches (though it's not EXACTLY like most MOBAS; there's only one lane, you win, the game ends when one teams second sentry (tower) is destroyed, and you can use the currency for unlocking items to also build turrets and buff stations), a two-lane version where you're trying to escort your minions to a point on the enemy's half of the map to score points and stop them from doing the same, and a new game mode I don't know much about.

Honestly it's a pretty fun game and it's perfectly viable to just dick around in the PvE missions, though I imagine it'll get boring quick if you're not interested in the PvP. There are also two new "story operations" but I haven't bought them so I don't really know anything about them.

I'm loving terrible, though, and I'd like to git gud, so if there's any goons still dicking around in this game, I'd like to play in some at least semi-coordinated teams some time

What a horrible thread to have a post.
I got this for 12 dollars. It's perfectly serviceable, gameplay-wise, and I can totally understand how people could fall in love with it. But if you're on the fence, it's easy to see how the overly-aggressive progression and monetization caused it to commit suicide.

This game failed because it's setup mostly like a F2P title but pretended to be AAA. The way the content was gated caused a massive negative feedback loop that killed it.

Let's lay out the problems:

The single player is the most perfunctory poo poo possible and isn't funny or interesting. In fact I still don't understand what the hell it's about. The lore is clunky and lovely. The characters talk in that stupid LOL BACON nerdspeak that unfunny writers are so fond of. It's grating. I can't imagine wanting to play through this campaign more than a couple of times.

The multiplayer has terrible matchmaking and shed a large portion of players immediately. The actual gameplay is fine, I found it to be about on the level of Stryfe or Paragon (not in specifics, just in general gameplay "tightness" and feel and the lower- and mid-skill levels). It failed to grab me but I can see how it could work.

The real problem is the content progression. The game is gated like a generous F2P. You only have a small hero pool and almost zero gear to start the game. That is simply unacceptable for a full price AAA game with season pass. I paid 12 bucks and I found it to be oppressive; I can't imagine how I would feel if I had paid 60 dollars.

So what happens? You start Battleborn up, and the penguin mech man or the sword lady or whoever is not available to play. You have your tiny little starter stable of heroes. You have to pick a hero that maybe doesn't interest you (this game aggressively pushes hero personality, which means that you can like the general gameplay but hate the character's attitude/style) and play their lovely single player multiple times, or submit yourself to the mercy of their bad multiplayer matchmaker (also lovely), in order to get what you want. Or of course give them more cash to actually use the poo poo that you paid for in your AAA game.

Well what most people did was not bother. They just didn't play at all. They didn't find it compelling, they found it exasperating.

So the population turfed and never came back. Why would they? They paid 60 bucks for a AAA MOBA game and got a gated off F2P maze trying to extract more money from them. They just should have played Stryfe. 30 bucks gets you all the heroes, no hoops to jump through, no "keys" to buy or challenges to unlock. Just pick and enjoy.

Battleborn should be looked at as a cautionary tale. Don't treat full price games like F2P. You'll regret it. Ask Ubisoft.

Yeah I definitely agree that pricing it like a Premium single-player game was a bad idea, and pricing it like a single-player game AND gating so many characters behind progression was astonishingly badly thought-out

A new update just came new update just came out, changing a ton of stuff. (Or more realistically, just some stuff) all non dlc heroes are unlocked after the prologue, character ranks max out at 20 now. There is a quest system that trickles in resources (including platinum) so if you want to not pay extra dollars for the game, it has a time sink option now. And there is a medieval skin pack for a few characters as well.

I like this new patch. New character is good. I want to try draft mode but I get all anxious and poo poo whenever any "serious" kind of competitive MOBA stuff is involved. Oscar Mike's Battle School has some great dialogue but as content it's just a tad disappointing.
