This is something that has bugged me ever since I've been a child. There are tons of shows that seem to love brightass red / blue lighting. WHY!? It has never ever looked good, even in the retard days of the 80s where garish colors were fashionable. Why is this a thing? And also, who thought that method of doing the credit scroll was a good idea?

Primary colors are cheaper and easier. Red and blue have better dynamic ranges together out of the primary colors.

I made a show using yellow and blue lighting but it just made everyone angry and nauseated. I'm pretty sure it was the lighting that did that.

it's actually not lighting but simply that different parts of the set are moving at different velocities, thus shifting their perceived color in the red or blue direction depending on their relative velocity with respect to the camera

I always thought it was neon teal and amber lighting. Maybe that was just the 90s.

Why do big budget movies like orange and teal? That's just the way it is.

It's a very eye catching and striking when done correctly. Mario Bava, the greatest filmmaker of all time, loved him some red/blue and also fog. Ergo red/blue lighting is good.

To actually to answer your question it's several reasons. Blue and red are striking colors and bring attention to the viewer. Primarily, it's red that makes you focus, as it's seem hot, but followed with the cool blue makes it pop out more. Blue is also a very lazy way to make humans pop out more. Softer blues especially make things feel futuristic or advanced. It's also a psychological affect of tension. Flashing those colors will tend to make a player feel on edge and therefore more prone to mistakes. All in all its a super cheap way to make something look better without putting the effort of good set design or a solid idea for a show.
