No they built and tested actual nuclear thermal engines (though not that saltwater poo poo), like NERVA in the US and whatever it was called in the USSR, but the upper stage requirements just weren't really there.

Also we could totes colonize the solar system with nuclear pulse propulsion right now.

Nuclear thermal owns, and like this guy said, we did do ground tests of NERVA (Nuclear Engine for Rocket Vehicle Application) back in the 60s.

They're still doing a bit of low level research on them (while I was in grad school, I got to see a test rig they have at Marshall where they use inductive heating to simulate the thermal loads a fuel element will experience.

The Soviet/Russian version was called the RD-0410; http://sturgeonshouse.ipbhost.com/index.php?/topic/896-rd-0410/?hl=rd-0410
Developed in the 1980s, it was a bit more efficient than NERVA, but had less thrust.

On a more fun note, scale model tests of Orion were also done.

What if the great filter is the invention of nuclear weapons and the reason the universe s mostly empty is bc 99.9% of species kill themselves shortly after discovering nukes?

Pretty sure that's one of the qualifiers for determining the number of possible intelligences in the galaxy. Like, okay you've got some sentient lifeforms that can transmit radio into space - now what percentage of those don't destroy themselves with the bomb, what percentage don't destroy the world with antimatter or determining the mass of a higgs boson, and so on.

my favorite extension of this theory is that once we are able to simulate a universe, our universe will end, because our simulated universe was being run by another lifeform testing the probability that they are in a simulated universe

simulation theory is also a really good explanation to the Fermi Paradox

it's pretty insane, honestly

like, if we're a simulation and we make a simulation, now we have what's called a nested simulation..... since we have no way of knowing how tall this nest is, with us at the bottom and our creations at the very bottom, a catastrophic event far up the chain could destroy an infinite number of universes

Audience measurement is rapidly expanding out of tv.

Although networks still put a tremendous amount of weight behind TV numbers because that's their primary revenue stream.

As a media planner, I care about those numbers too when I'm building out recommendations for a client too. Ratings + contextual fit + % of target audience from the universe = me giving a network a green light or not.

people are really funny creatures and basically live to be told to do(or buy something) from a higher authority. tvs and radios are higher authorities.
