Probably should have done this earlier in the year, but whatever.

Video game movies have typically been disappointing experiences. Ranging from bombs like Doom, forgettable flops like Prince of Persia, campy schlock such as Steet Fighter The Movie and the Resident Evil franchise, as well as ambitious failures like Super Mario Bros.

2016 has proven to be an interesting year for video game movies.

RATCHET AND CLANK

Sony Pictures
Directed by Kevin Munroe (Dylan Dog Jericca Cleland (Animism
Budget: $20 million
Gross: $12.4 million

Sony released a video game based on a movie based on the original video game. Then they released the movie. An animated retelling of the events of the original PS2 title by Rainmaker Studios (formerly Mainframe, makers of Reboot and Beast Wars). The movie was a big flop. George Weidman of Superbunnyhop has a good review. This does not bode well for Sly Cooper, Sony's next game to movie property.

WARCRAFT

Legendary Pictures
Directed by Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code )
Budget: $160 million
Gross: $381.1 million (as of writing this)

An adaptation of Blizzard's 1994 fantasy RTS, Warcraft is the story of a bunch of Orcs leaving their dead world behind to live in the fantasy world of Azeroth. A bunch of humans and elves and poo poo get pissed and try to stop the alien invasion.

Warcraft has come out to mixed reviews. A flop in the US and Europe, but a megahit in China. So far, Warcraft is quite possibly the most successful video game movie ever made. Not really a high bar, I know. Quite frankly, I'm glad it didn't ruin Duncan Jones's career. (I liked the movie.)

ASSASSIN'S CREED

20th Century Fox
Directed by Justin Kurzel (Macbeth)
Release date: December 21, 2016
Trailer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcTtP1JnJ_E

Based on Ubisoft's massively popular annual series. Assassin's Creed is about Michael Fassbender getting hooked up to a machine that lets him relive the memories of his ancestor who was a member of an ancient group of assassins unimaginatively called Assassins who wage a secret war against a mustache twirling evil group known as Templars who secretly control the world. This movie will follow an original group of chararacters not connected to the games. The movie will flip between the present and past setting of Spain during the Spanish Inquisition. Rumors suggest the movie will be 60% present scenes, 30% past scenes, and 10% credits. The movie will be full of glitches. It comes out a week after Star Wars Rogue One, so :rip:

The Future and possible vaporware
Ubisoft is also planning a movie based on Watch Dogs and The Division.

Activision has started their own movie studio and is planning on making a series of films based on Call of Duty.

Not only is Sony trying to adapt their own video game properties, they want to adapt that of their competition. They are working with Sega to release a live action animated hybrid Sonic the Hedgehog movie in 2018.

As well as taking another crack at Super Mario. This might be the craziest one considering the original Super Mario Bros movie made Nintendo so guarded with their franchises to this day.
