Bastard bonds is the product of a gay bara artist branching into mainstream indie game development. It's an incredibly nice first showing!
It's been out since April I think on his personal website but just got released on Steam through greenlight. That's how I and a bunch of other people have found it.

As you can imagine there's not a ton of info online about the actual mechanics of the game because it's new and obscure and worst of all, has naked men in it! So I thought I would see what yall thought about it by making this thread. I'm already horribly addicted to it and would love to discuss the gameplay.

FAQs:

Is this a gay porn VN?

No, this is a real, honest to god, light strategy game with no sex depicted. HOWEVER, there is extremely tiny pixel nudity and you can have the girl show her boobs on the title screen in the options menu. Apparently there is mention of sex happening in some dialogs but I haven't gotten there yet.

Ok but is it a good game!!!!!!

I'll let everyone be the judge but I can tell you that I've gotten really hooked on it. It plays like FFT + XCOM + Baldur's Gate, but very simplified and fast paced. The big fun is in exploring the island, recruiting new friends and expanding your stronghold. In battle you can use risky moves to get extra turns but you have to be careful to use it too much your you could fumble, losing your turn and making yourself more vulnerable to enemy attacks. You can recruit every single random enemy, even monsters once you have the right skills. It's got just enough randomness to make it replayable and exciting.

A big selling point is the amount you can customize your character.

When making a new character you are accused of a crime of your choosing, which you can then profess guilt or innocence of (and you can lie). This all has an effect on your game.

A fight

I also think the music is very pleasant, its got an original soundtrack but I don't think the guy has done any other games. It sounds like a cross between Sakimoto (Vagrant Story, FFT) and Terraria. OST here: http://hammerspace.bandcamp.com/

Get the demo and buy the game HERE on steam. http://store.steampowered.com/app/486720/

I'm about 2 hours into the game. How important is it to secure locations you've visited previously? I've been doing it to help keep areas around my stronghold secure after there's that little explosion and an area becomes unsecure, but I don't know how much it matters. I've also been doing it to try and help level up some lower-level party members, but it doesn't seem to be working very well.

Actually I don't think it matters if you go back to old areas aside from some extra exp and to recruit monsters. But, as you've experienced, the exp is not great because the areas never level up with you, they are set the first time you enter them and stay at that level forever. So areas getting secured, aside from allowing you to place a stronghold, is also to keep you from grinding at the same place over and over. Your stronghold from my experience is never in any danger, MAYBE unless you never visit it, but I still can't imagine your stronghold getting taken over, like where would all your guys go.

It's actually an integral part of the game that you take over areas you've been through so your guys have a place to camp, where you can also recruit merchants and like a stockpile guy and blacksmith. You have to keep relocating to better places so you can hold more people and acquire more services, and you need to keep recruiting new guys to add to your manpower to be able to afford the upkeep on bigger strongholds. You can set up in abandoned cabins, ruined towns, dungeons and caves, all kinds of places.

I played the demo for a few hours tonight

I swear to Christ I am reloading if I ever get Greave killed. Dude has been nothing but a champion and getting off this godforsaken island is not worth it if I can't do it with my homie.
