I've been looking into getting my 8 year old Lhasa mix some insurance. I found one company (Healthy Paws) that seems very well reviewed, but they won't cover hip dysplasia in dogs over 6, which is a deal breaker. Other companies I've found have decent editorial reviews, but actual users only seem to post their horror stories so they all have terrible rankings. Do any of you have pet insurance? If so, can you recommend a solid one that will actually pay claims and not jack up rates? Or is pet insurance a scam and I'd be better off stuffing money in the mattress?

My 11 year old great dane just had bladder surgery and my insurance rolled over a month later with embrace and increased by $2 this year. We have a discount so it's $150 a month for five dogs at a $500 deductible and 80% reimbursement. That surgery alone cost $3,000 in vet bills. He was ill in December as well and they covered that too.

Have you looked at Figo yet? They seemed to be really good for pre-existing conditions and ages when I got a quote using my 7 year old dog.

I saw Trupanion pay out 90% of a $20K bill for diagnostics and treatment (including plasmapheresis) for a dog with myasthenia gravis. They also cover the monthly (expensive) meds that dog needs.
