I have since a young age been a fan of midnight movies. Sadly I didn't live in the time of grindhouses and the sleaze of the 60-70s. I was born in the 80s so I never got to sit in a dark dank basement theater and watch Richard Elfman's Forbidden Zone or Rinse Dream's Café Flesh. But I've never the less found a love for these wonderful works of madness and sometimes genius. 1.For those of you who might not know. midnight movie(Noun) A B-movie, often in camp style and with a retro theme. 2.midnight movie(Noun) A low-budget film which has become a cult classic, referring in this sense to original tradition of showing such films at night. Often these movies were ways for porn companies to make more money. They would shoot a movie with a story and sex but then make two versions. One with all the sex and the other without. Change the title and they can play to the porn houses and to the regular theaters. I wanted to make a Thread for these pictures of yesteryear. Share your favorite, let's talk about how insane these movies are and share the hard to find gems.

Definitely following. I love the weird and out there cinema, and before a certain time, there's a definite heavy overlap with the "midnight movie" category on the Venn Diagram for the two.

I'm digging it. Most of my exposure to this style of movie is of the MST3K-cheese variety, but I've always been fascinated by those truly bizarre flicks from the '70s and '80s which would never make it through Hollywood today.

Definitely have to check out El Topo, the granddaddy of the midnight movie - it was a minor craze at the time of its release and the showings were selling out completely for months, with a bunch of people showing up over and over again (sorta like Rocky Horror Picture Show, which is the one midnight movie pretty much everyone is familiar with), and it eventually got a wider release because of support from John Lennon. It's a very, very bizarre, dense, sometimes uncomfortable movie stuffed to the gills with mystical symbolism and it's a huge influence on directors like Lynch and Refn, so if you are at all into that kind of movie, it's a must-see. It's also gorgeous, tons of really great cinematography and imagery that sticks with you. Jodorowksy's other movies are good, too - Holy Mountain in particular is a great one to check out if you dig this one. Here's an old trailer for it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FjKcuh8pZtE

sebmojo posted:SANTA SANGRE is amazing, at some point they push an elephant off a cliff iirc Yeah. Pretty much all Jodorowsky movies are amazing and definitely fit the bill if you want weird midnight movies. I am pretty bummed we'll never get to see his version of Dune or that movie he was going to make where Marilyn Manson plays a future-pope with razor blade teeth. Also Santa Sangre is available for streaming on Shudder, which lets you do a free trial, if anyone wants to check it out that way. They've got a bunch of cool old giallo / exploitation horror too, lots of stuff that made the midnight circuits. Their site is sorta janky sometimes but the free trial's worth it. All of his movies are on Amazon Instant, too, I think.
