It was getting difficult to shift the front gears on my bike, so I had it serviced. When I shifted up, it wouldn't stay on the higher gear unless I held the down the shift lever for a while. I've just got it back, and they had to replace the chain and the cassette, saying they were very worn.

It's only been about a year and ~1500km (at a very generous estimate) since the chain and cassette were replaced, which seems like a short time. I oil my chain every month, religiously, and I take care not to cross-chain and to shift gears before I need to put strain on them.

So how come the parts wore out so quickly?

I feel like there must be something I'm doing wrong. Maybe I'm cross-chaining without realising? My rule is I use rear gears 1-3 with front gear 1, 3-6 with 2 and 6-8 with 3. I'm seldom in any gear higher than 4 on the rear and 2 on the front, though.
