You confer with Dispatch - so we've got psychiatric, general practice, any other specialists we should be pulling from? Ophthalmology, dental, oncology, really there's a plethora of specialized medical people out there, but how many can they have?

As it turns out, there IS a really skookum oncology clinic, funded by FOIOM, and a dentist has set up on the Shelf as a lark. There's no ophthalmology clinic, and apparently they're still waiting on pieces for a surgery, funded by Egypt, Free Palestine, and Yemen to determine if recovery in Mars' gravity works any better than the Moon's, which has proved to be useful only in some circumstances. There are two surgeries pending, the team there is asking for a look at your inventory. You are pretty sure you'll disappoint them?

This will be a ranked ballot, please order objectives beginning with those of greatest importance to you. Leave out what you choose not to pursue.

A) We already voted on this. Get Tanya out there, wrangling patients. Quite a few people waiting outside in suits now.

B) Get your inventory to the surgery team.

C) Get the Quartermaster on the line.

D) Get nurses and other staff to help out.

E) Set up shop and start selling stuff!

F) Talk to that Ms. Green Thumb.

G) Complain about how unrealistic and wealthy this wildcat colony is. (lore)

H) Something Else??

You launch into a flurry of activity, but you know, one at a time. A nod passes between you and Tanya, and she sets the airlock cycling. You remember to yell into the microphone, 'And ask for medical experience!' at Tanya. Yeah. Mr. Dispatch should get after that too, so it's a good thing you yelled it at the mike. This will cost you DOSH. You ask to speak to their quartermaster next. A lilting brogue greets you in moments that were only sort of like months.

'Ah! If it isn't our visiting doctor!! I've a question for you!! Would you let me take some pictures??'

composure roll - awkward picture silence - high is good: 1d4 4

Perhaps, another day, you would have given way to an awkward silence or filled the void with something worse. But today you consider. 'With... my cameras?'

'I'd like a survey of the land, miss! Just right! I've a bounty on tin for you, but I can pay regardless we find a thing.'

Hm

You hear him out, and it seems he's certain tin exists nearby, excitedly offering you hands-on time with a relevant tin nodule. Tin, he explains patiently, would enable bronze, which would provide the materials to make already-discovered iron usable as steel. Eventually. *INTERRUPT* You might have them over a barrel here.

You:

A) Push them over a barrel-
Insist on extra (DOSH) to do this!!

B) Refuse - This could compromise treatment.

C)Accept, unbarrelling
This will cost you (DOSH)

?) Something else?
That settled, or at least begun, you turn to the matter of goods, the great complement to services.

It seems they fancy themselves self sufficient for food, as Riley scarcely yawns over your plethora of cakes and fruit and such. He has a inkling of what surgery needs, the simple stuff, sterile tools, bandages, a lot seems like it could be salable here.

You:

D)agnammit bah gawd you put them over a barrel.

E)Hold back some supplies for Hellashore and the observatory.

F)Sell them whatever they like

G) Something else?

When, in the fullness of time, things have been decided but stuff must happen, there is the tool that authors and readers refer to with equal fervour and dread as the ~timeskip~

In this technique, time moves forward, through arcane means, to arrive at a point determined by the author (also arcane means). Organs, recreational and otherwise, bud, unfold, or otherwise ripen, foundations are laid for a life to be lived as long desired, or as just realized, surveys conducted (at high cost, no less!!), surgeries are conducted with skill, aplomb, and various sundries, and generally things go...

Result: 10d10 (8, 7, 4, 8, 8, 8, 8, 8, 5, 5) pairs are success, triples or better increase width of success, ascending order of successes, prime represent obstacles to the success

oops. things went... minor success with obstacles, wide ranging success without obstacles generally. between the nurses and Joyce's piloting you find places of calm to do the work, even if the work is strapped in in freefall. Happily, you found the important stuff right away, giving you time to set down and really dig into work, secure in your bounty, and save the surveying for when you were napping.

That survey...matching (d12)d12 on ascending quality for tin, primes present obstacles

Result: 10d12 (8, 8, 5, 5, 10, 7, 2, 12, 2, 2) The large low quality alone would have gotten you some bounty, but the middling prime down in the canyon would have worth going after over it. The juicy deposit within easy reach of the Shelf, though.... That got you some serious (dosh)!!

~~

There's been a symposium going, into the myriad of questions surrounding the Cosmic. Anecdotal accounts across the world of taste variation within the Cosmic have been largely confirmed, the flammability of the Cosmic in low oxygen environments is still considered low, but the precise extent to which human habitation in space renders this moot is still under urgent study. Questions such as the Cosmic's origin, and how precisely it evaded notice until the final days before its impact have been the subject of much debate but few finalized studies. This final week of the event, to which such findings had been delayed, was much anticipated. So it was that you were in the juicy part of giving a young man gills with that symposium on in the background, that a babble of interest briefly drew your attention. By the time the juicy bit stopped demanding your full attention, a clearly nervous man's hurried presentation was underway:

"- unnatural-" was the only word you made out before a tumult of gasps from the broadcast and your rocket gave way to - "It must be true!! Any natural formation of ethanol will of necessity be primarily methanol!!"

For a moment, people can be seen handing out pamphlets to audience members, supplied by security personel carrying large stacks of the things, only now noticing the unease spreading across the auditorium.

"A still is needed for any concentration of ethanol, let alone the extremely high concentrations we find in the Cosmic!! The findings of this symposium regarding composition variation only compounds the impossiblity of a natural Cosmic!!"

By now a hush has fallen across your operating theatre, if not the symposium. There, in Lusaka, Zambia, security guards can be seen dropping their great handfuls of pamphlets and approaching the podium, stone-faced, while the crowd at large, in scattered sections reads, cheers, berates, and occasionally panics. The security is feebly opposed by the former pamphleteers, gaining only seconds for the speaker before being bodily pushed aside.

"The Cosmic is the work of a type I or greater civilization!!! Now, guys, I know we gave you a wild goose chase but this is what people should be aware of. There could well be more to come here, but it's a drat lot of effort to give us something drinkable, instead of spending much less effort on the same amount of material, allowing the Cosmic to appear natural, and hurt us much, much more effectively." Security, past the speaker's defenders, consider the man as he concludes, "I'm done!", handing off his mic.

You:

A) yuuuup dunno why he said anything - streetwise

B) oh well that's, yes, not sure how i didn't think of it being a problem - broader knowledge of science, but not cunning

C) this is news to me, i guess methanol is bad somehow? - somehow oblivious, morale bonus

D) now the other shoe drops.. - paranoia suffused, about as useful as a spear held skyward in the everyone-gets-a-free-angry-jaguar apocalypse, IF you point it in the right direction...

we dont choose what we are, and so this vote will be a roulette outcome. triple value to write ins, this vote only!!

It is not that there is a new person here, nor that the mind's eye is blind to the changes. But there is something new revealing itself, something neither self nor organ, not nerve nor parasite, but intimately connected to all of these. Within this gesalt lies many minds, tiny, persistent, generational, sapient. They are, in truth, too quiet to hear individually, but they are stomping in unison now. Can you hear them? They offer this explanation.

We are the dish - a bacteria based sapient - once a sort of clever communal parasite, then, a proud people resting atop great tamed beasts, until contact, and uplift, and to war. Fault is lost to us, but at the end, we were free, fat upon the lives of that vast, arm spanning war. Today, we function as an afterlife of sorts for a small union of species, a thousand, thousand, thousand minds and more in concert within a single body, dwelling lightly upon the nervous systems of our hosts, and disentangling feuds and our own twisted, maladjusted selves alike. Our wargerm heritage supersedes what we could truly do, forcing us to remain within what we take, among other limitations, and far from Earth, worlds work towards an apotheosis of virtual lives. We would leave your body, if we could, but we tell you true, you chose this, though we took that memory for your safety. If you would keep us, and let us thrive, we can offer... specialties, as we tool up our tech tree. But first, you should know something of those who are also true powers in this place.

- reptilian - capable of withdrawing from the universe, an ideal hiding technique. upon this foundation, a great people was founded, growing into power players among the stars, and felled, when their ecological niche closed as they investigated a strange alien artifact found within the Orion Nebula. once unerring diplomats and spies, even now their diminished ability to retreat into the unseen dimensions of our universe makes them a unique threat. their greatest hinderance is their reliance on 'the withdrawal,' one of many names for their nigh-hyper-reality-chameleonic abilities, as physically they are comparatively slow. Once their fleets were wholly unneeded save as threat, now they are the declining powerhouse, still dangerous, but with a sharp halflife. Note well:

quantum hyperpack fuel - it's true most dimensions are tightly rolled up, but it turns out we can stuff molecules in the little cavities that form where they roll up(everywhere)

A human development that we are absolutely sure intrigues the reptilians mightily.

- grey - steve can't help but turn his slaves into more steves. the dish as a people, and indeed the people of earth, seem largely immune to the greys, but their technology, poorly wielded as it is, is still dangerous. For the greys, psionics is a fact of life, and what was the greys civilizational height was almost entirely public, characterized by an all-too-familiar gender politics. The male caste, coalescing in large part against polyamory in favour of pairbonding, found itself outnumbered by those who might put up with them if they would stop being so goddamn aggro. In aggravation, males wore the masks of another's self, pretending to accept the guise of consent. The majority's counterstroke, that the singular Steve was indeed preferable to all this violence, was met by the desire that all would be Steve before any of them would admit they had been wrong. That is where it has sat, for several human generations. From the Cygnus Spur to the near side of the Milky Way's Bar, what had been a host of psionic civilizations became a frightening monoculture, a singular personality mirrored endlessly. What was 'Steve' is now a disorganized host of personalities, all identical, psionically uncommunicative, and frustratingly regressive to the norm of the instant that whole tangle started.

Earth represents a vast bounty of people who are Not Steve for the greys, people who might even be down with slavery!! You are a sick people after all. What renders you so resistant is still unknown. Our psionic technology is inextricably linked with mindtaking, you're on your own there.

So, as we said, a wargerm heritage, and we set you loose, to contend as human backed by the best we can do.

A) The eye. the nervous system is a tricky business still. Were we to go out-system, to a Dish hub of technology, there might be some classified stuff that could seriously augment your mind, skimming off the edge of taking your mind and serving it instead. Here and now, we can augment your vision in a variety of interesting ways. One of the last things we got sent from back home was plans for an eye laser!! Gonna need cybernetic parts and surgery for that one though.

B) The stomach. Excreted munitions. Acid blood? Contact drugs. All possible with the upgraded chemical factory you used to call your stomach.

C) the hand. musculature, skeleton, ligaments, blood vessels. All flawed by a design process that does not understand itself, working its greatest power only through what you and we would rightly term a genocide of random chance. But there are a myriad of improvements and tweaks we can make, given time. Dexterity, strength, protractile and prehensile claws, the entire body could be your playground.

~~~
Not to distract you or anything: but this little essay took a bit to process for you, and that hush in your operating theatre is starting to give way to heated debate and panic.
Any thoughts??
D) Spill the beans
E) Stay quiet
F) Mundane debate, write-in to what end
G) Something else??
Much as with the Dish, it is not that there are fundamentally different humans here, nor that the minds involved have forgotten the divisions of the past in search of collective peace. There is genuine panic here, true, but to a one, it does not give way to action. There is angry debate, but such does not bring violence. To the early 21st century eye, this might seem miraculous, impossible, or a hideous complacency. But to say that there is novel behavior here is to discount the millenia of striving, ingenuity, and cooperation that ran constant through human history. The public has always been resilient, while elites, sure in their need to maintain control, have always been clouded by the fear of panic in the public; thus the elite take actions that reduce the capability of the public to assert that panic, yet necessarily also impact that public's resilience, compounding crises. We try not to do that anymore.
So, what *is* happening?
3 already present aides to the mayor and most of the current rocket population have commandeered a whiteboard, (always have whiteboards or other slates about, gotta draw up a diagram for the nurses to learn somehow!!) outlining threats an alien Cosmic could pose, how screwed we are having noshed on the stuff senselessly already, what would be needed to go without the Cosmic, even temporarily, here on Mars, whether an evacuation can be made without leaning on the Cosmic, that kind of thing. The threat that seems to be coalescing is nanobots.
The younger adults (kids) are very excited about aliens and are being escorted outside to play.
There are a small handful of panicked partners to thrillseekers, cared for by the on-duty nurses, but so far none of them are panicking. One nurse is discussing pointedly with Tanya, who is making eyes at you.
Well, she was, now she's grabbed your elbow, and is talking at you. "Jane, we gotta put our darlings somewhere the theorists can't bother them."
They end up in your private cabin, which isn't a risk because:
1)Your papers on the crime fruit are in:
a) the engine room,
b) the pilot's glovebox, or
c) your medical records
All told, you lost about 3 hours, eight bandages, and two spinners worth of juicy bits, and that whiteboard to this delay, as you managed to send the planning session outside, get those who could still stomach their procedures their juicy bits, and give the darlings time to calm down and rest before lightly shooing them out.
2) Well, that was a day, and it promises to be an evening, but name a priority for this evening in particular:
d) mundane work on the gene therapy equipment to catch up from today's delays
e) think about these bacteria or what have you that seem to have taken up residence
f) break the 'i seem to be an alien' news to your crew
g) talk about the more mundane possiblility of aliens and a constructed Cosmic
h) something else??
