This thread is for all the things that you just recently got into long after everyone else stopped giving a crap.

For example, less than a year ago, my wife had me listen to the Disintegration album by The Cure. It was a cassette tape, in a full stereo, at night, and it Blew. My. Mind. I had heard their radio hits many times, but hearing this album reminded me of the OLD DAYS when bands created albums that were meant to be listened to in their entirety for full effect.

drat, it's such a ridiculously good album. Obviously, the title track is so amazingly powerful and emotional... I love the rising and falling cadence and how the verse just keeps going and going, very much like an argument or yelling match of a couple whose relationship is falling apart. Fascination Street, Lullaby, Prayers for Rain, Plainsong, and Homesick are also real gems.

The bummer is that I've since listened to the previous album, Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me as well as the one after (Wish), and neither are in that same tone and sound of Disintegration. Do any of their albums even come close to it?

Anyhow, let's talk about the stuff that we got into way after everybody else.

If I haven't seen[heard] it, it's new to me!

There are individual Cure tracks on albums that are similar to Disintegration, but there is no album like it.

A Night Like This (Head on the Door album) could be a Disintegration song?

Im a big fan of the Cure and I think its impossible to say what is their best album , their style changes quite vastly between albums, and certainly between '76 and now.

They can be a band where you love an album, or albums, rather than love them as a band.

I personally stopped listening to them after Wish.

I would say Disintegration is definitely excellent, its just amazing stuff. I love Wish as well, it definitely in my top 5 Cure albums.

If you want to get into them I would say WATCH, not listen to, watch their live album Show.

Appreciated! I know Pornography is highly regarded [heh]. I'll find some time to watch that live show, too.

My wife also has this

I've listened to the first CD (late 1970s stuff) . It's totally all over the place because they didn't really have a set style yet. But it's kinda fun.

I'm gonna go ahead and add Bat Out of Hell as another album that I'm only now really appreciating. "For Crying Out Loud" is easily as good, if not better, than Meat Loaf's other epics, and it closes out an excellent 14x platinum album, so it's weird that the song didn't have much presence in radio or film. I've listened to that album, and specifically that song, quite a few times in the past few weeks and always want to hear it again.

Disintegration owns, it's my favorite The Cure album by far

It turned 30 last year and to celebrate that they live streamed a show from the Sydney Opera House that consisted of B-sides and demos from that era, then Disintegration in its entirety, and then an encore. It's great

The full show appears to be unlisted from the official channel now but the video is still there

First Cure album I ever listened to, and the only one for a good while after that, was Bloodflowers. And I still think it's a good album. But eventually going straight to their early 70s material from that was a bit of a turnaround.

I'd say The Top or Japanese Dream for the moody/dreampop feel, or The Head on the Door which is poppier but feels Disintegration-adjacent at times. But nothing is as good as that one, it's unfortunate you started with the best one.

Yeah, I'm realizing that :(

But on the other hand, I'm old enough to appreciate that I got the experience. I often see goons discuss what it would be like to see Terminator 2 or some other movie for the first time, so this was a little nugget that I missed and get to experience as new. It's neat!

It's not actually "new" to me, but the last time I listened to this cool spoken-word album was the last time I woke up unexpectedly at 2 am

I had a horrible first experience with The Cure (it was something like a promotional track they released on mp3 dot com when I was in middle school) and between that and Chris Onstad consistently clowning on them I wrote them off for a long time. I felt the same way about Disintegration on first listen, but some tracks are definitely on the weaker side for me now. Plainsong is just about the greatest tone-setting album opener ever though

Aside from getting shot in the head, David, what have you done with yourself?
I think Faith is up there with Disintegration and Pornography as their best. Not many tracks, gloomy but each song has a unique sound and mood. I never skip any tracks and I think the title track is one of their best.

The drummer Lol got the news his mom died during a show when they were playing Faith and he just stopped playing and left and the rest kept playing. I saw them in 2004 and was glad to hear that and Drowning Man (which is about the Titus Groan/Gormenghast books)
