Stage 14 - Boss

BGM: Bhava-Agra Theme

Okay then. It’s about time we finish our business here.

There’s no need to handicap the team anymore since the next boss doesn’t have notable skills for Satori to learn. Besides, I don’t think Satori with Mad Thunder could deal significant damage to the boss.

I’m still using my ideal party of 1 tank, 2 supports, and 2 attackers (1 physical attacker, 1 magic attacker). I use Patchouli since she can manipulate Land meter.

Is this really the last boss? We’ll find out.

Hey, Tenshi. You’ve been waiting for Reimu, right? Well, there she is.

: We’ve finally pinned you down, Tenshi!

Allegedly.

: So you finally made it. I’ve been waiting so long I was just about to give up and sleep.

: So you’re not denying it, then? Not to mention the fact you were “waiting” for us.

: It looks like you really are our culprit!

: Fufufu, indeed I am.

: The mist incident… I’m the culprit behind it.

Straight to the point, eh? I like it.

: No need to tell me – we’re apprehending you either way!

That is one very flexible wooden ritual stick.

: Ahh, your anger and hostility – they’re wonderful! It looks like I’m in for a good time.

: You certainly are acting shameless, considering you’re the one who perpetrated all this.

: Speakin’ o’ how she’s actin’… She sure did admit to bein’ the culprit real easily…

Marisa, could you please lay it off with the shortened words?

Finally, there’s someone who noticed her being very suspicious.

: Oh right, you guys even went to Eientei, huh.

: How did you know that…?

: I’m Hinanawi Tenshi! Watching the lower world from Bhavaagra is a piece of cake.

Does every Heaven dweller have their own magic surveillance pond?

: So, what you’re saying is… We were literally made to put on a show for the culprit?

: That’s exactly right. I’ve been peeping on you from the very beginning.

: For example, I saw you wander all over, always guessing the wrong culprit.

Do you not get bored watching them grinding levels and NOT making any progress at all?

: Peeping? How awful…

: (You’re really not the one to talk, Aya…)

At least Aya doesn’t have magic surveillance tool.

: So you were up here laughing at our struggles the whole time, then… Grr… That really irks me!

: I’m going to exterminate you!

: (“After all”…? It sort of sounds like you just want revenge…)

Reimu isn’t a good investigators.

: …I see. I’d heard that celestials were beings free of worldly thoughts, liberated from the karma of the human world… But it seems there are those such as yourself as well.

Tenshi only ascends because her entire family were chosen to become celestials. This is why she isn’t a model celestial.

: Byakuren…?

: For the sake of the youkai that are still suffering, allow me to put you in a little pain.

“I’m a healer, but I can still beat you down to submission.”

: Fufufu, NOW you’ve got me excited.

: There’s not much point suspecting your motives now.

Ready to be taught a lesson?

: However, I’d still like to ask beforehand… Just why did you cause this incident…?

: My, what a boorish question. Answering it would just spoil the fun of our fight.

Yep. She really wants to be punished.

: Hmph.

: …

: Um, I…

: Yeah, yeah, we don’t need to hear it every time.

: Urgh… Okay…

She didn’t even try. Everyone already knew how useless her mind reading power is.

: Fufufu, sorry for ruining your chance to shine, little miss. But your power won’t work on me.

: L-Little miss…!?

: And I don’t want to be treated like one by someone with a board for a chest!

Ah. Yes. It’s the typical anime tropes.

: Wha!?

: I-I’m just slender and look skinny through my clothes, but—

: Yet everyone calls you the “unshaking epicenter”…

: !

I refused to entertain their childish taunts.

: (She used Tenshi’s anger to momentarily pierce the wall guarding her heart…)

: Now look here!

I’m with Reimu in this one. She’s sick of that overused trope in anime.

: Wha!?

: Wha!?

: If you’ve got the time to waste on chitchat, then let’s use it to settle this, Tenshi!

: Hold on, Reimu! I—

: Yeah, yeah. I’ll hear it after we’re—

Beating the boss is the fastest way to gain answers.

She’s more ticked off than Satori is.

: …How fun. How very, very fun…

: Oh dear… Reimu’s a real prodigy when it comes to angering others…

Did Reimu have “Verbal Abuse” skill on one of her skill tree? Gotta check it after this.

: I get to have my way with all of you after you’ve angered me so…

She can cause an earthquake just by stabbing her sword into the ground.

: S-She seems kind of mad…!

Thank you for the observation, captain Aya.

: Well yeah, duh.

: This is your fault for saying that stuff and getting her riled up, Reimu!

Blame Satori. She’s the one who started it.

: What’s the issue? We were going to exterminate her either way.

: Yeah, good point. She gave the signal to start, so let’s give her a good beatin’.

: Go ahead, try it!

: We’re finally going to resolve everything with this.

Your punishment awaits!

: Unlike last time, I’m as serious as I can get…

I don’t care about what your power is. All I care is that you have a magic sword, a keystone, and you can manipulate earth.

BGM: Boss 2

This boss fight uses the second boss theme. Which means this boss is very difficult and it will take all we have to win.

Tenshi has 25000 HP, 220 PDef, 100 MDef, 25 Divine Barrier, immune to earth, resists light and strike and is weak to thunder, dark, and slash. Her HP and defenses is high enough to outlast our party. Without liberal use of buff and debuff, we’ll run out of MP before she’ll run out of HP.

On the very first turn, she’ll always use her strongest attack: Magnum Stone Shower twice without any warning. One cast of it is enough to kill anyone in one hit. Two is just complete overkill.

Game really loves to screw over first time player/ someone who doesn’t read a guide walkthrough.

So, have everyone equipped with at least 50% earth resistance.

I’ll use earth elemental drain for good measure.

After surviving her initial salvo, she’ll use earth and slash attack against our party. Although in my experience, she prefer using slash based attack than her earth elemental magic. She also has a low chance of using Magnum Stone Shower again. We could endure that attack with MDef buff and Alice’s shield skill.

Unlike the previous boss, Tenshi is a straight forward boss fight who attempt to beat our party with her physical might rather than using trickery or nasty status effect like the previous fight. This makes her easier to defeat.

Just don’t use Field skill though. She’ll overwrite any Field skill with her own Field skill that gives her massive HP regeneration that’s impossible to outdamage.

Patchouli has skills that interact with the Land meter. So we’ll have her increase thunder Land Power to weaken her earth elemental attack and empower our thunder based attack.

And then have Byakuren buff Patchouli’s MAtk, Sakuya’s PAtk and imbue her weapon with thunder (I later realize it’s not necessary though since Tenshi’s already weak to slash). After that, bombard her with thunder until she’s dead.

Really? That’s your ultimate attack? You need to do better than this!

Byakuren with Inf buff is near guaranteed to land her debuff. And her debuff are nasty.

My main damage dealer can now deals even more damage to her now that both her PDef and MDef are debuffed to oblivion.

And that’s it. She’s dead now.

BGM: Victory

Once we survive her initial salvo of double Magnum Stone Shower, there is nothing she can do to hurt us.

Have you learned your lesson!?

: Phew… It’s finally all over for you Tenshi!

: Whew, I give, I give. You beat me real bad. I didn’t think I’d actually go and lose like that.

Fun!? So that’s your real motive.

: You sure seem to be in high-spirits after that beating… You’re freaking me out.

It’s rumored that Tenshi is actually a masochist. This is a just a rumor, though.

: Well, yeah, I AM in high spirits.

: Whatever, that doesn’t matter. Hurry up and put an end to the incident.

: I can’t.

Of course it’s not going to be that easy.

: What?

Yeeeeah… It’s obvious she’s just lying.

: ……

Did you guys falls for it?

: Sorry, I didn’t hear you clearly just now. Could you repeat that for me?

: When I said I was the culprit, that was a lie.

Come on! It’s obvious she’s lying. I guess they’re too exhausted and too eager to solve the incident ASAP.

: …Could you answer this next question within 10 seconds before I lose my mind…? …Why did you spout that “I’m the culprit” nonsense…?

: Because this is an incident, of course. It’s a festival!

: If you go and have all that fun without me, then of course I’ll get jealous. And if I’m jealous and you come point fingers at me, then of course I’d lie and say I was the--

Hey! Tenshi is supposed to have only 0 Eva.

: What do you think you’re doing!? Stop evading! Sit still and let me exterminate you to help quell my rage!

: Geez, I said I was sorry. Look, I’ll tell you the truth behind the incident in return, so let’s call it even.

: Huh…?

: You didn’t hear me?

Finally. Someone who knows what’s happening.

: W-What, really…? Why do YOU know any o’ that…?

: Don’t you know that I’m Hinanawi Tenshi? Gathering info about Gensokyo from here’s as simple as it gets.

: (Come to think of it, you did say you peeped on Gensokyo…)

She did have a magic surveillance pond.

: Allow me to ask you, then. Just what is the truth behind this incident…?

: Nfufu, okay, listen up and pay close attention now.

Okay…

: You see--

Ooookay…. Did you forgot about it?

: … “You see” what?

: Would it be cooler if I posed while telling you?

: Out with it already!

I’m also about to lose my patience.

: O-Okay, fine. Geez, you’re no fun…

We’re already exhausted and out of patience.

: The truth behind the incident, you see…

Finally! We found out who the culprit is…. 2/3 into the game.

: Their base, and the source of the mist, is the Forest of Magic.

: Aquatic gods new to Gensokyo…

: The Forest of Magic…

: But why are they doing this…?

: Beats me. I don’t know THAT much.

: Either way, they can’t be aiming for anything decent.

I bet it’s for world domination!

: Well, that much is obvious.

: They made a massive fool out of me – Hakurei Reimu. Nobody “decent” does that.

The culprits poisons all youkai in Gensokyo. I don’t think they’re decent people.

: So, you said “they” just now.

: That means there’s multiple culprits, huh…

Yeah. No matter how strong they are, they can still be defeated by Alice-Byakuren-Sakuya combo.

: But, they made a huge fool out of ME. So no matter WHO they are, I’m exterminating them for sure.

: Grr…..!

: (I feel pity for our foes, in a sense…)

: Either way, we finally know where our true objective is. Let’s get ourselves together and go exterminate the culprits!

: But precisely WHERE in the Forest of Magic…?

: In the first place, didn’t we already investigate the forest? Is their base really in there…?

: Furthermore, why would aquatic gods be in a forest of all--

: I know where they are.

Nice, Marisa. There’s no need to blindly search the forest.

: Huh? Well, aren’t you sharp-witted today, Marisa. Where are they, then?

: Genbu Ravine…?

: It’s a hidden ravine only a few people know about. It wouldn’t be a weird place for aquatic gods or whatever to be.

: Huh, so there’s a ravine in the Forest of Magic. I didn’t know, either.

: Yep!

From here on out, we’ll be fighting against the main villain.

Interlude

The main villain is finally shown without their organization XIII-esque cloak for the first time. 2/3 into the game.

The first main villain shown is the turtle goddess.

: ……

Looks like the second main villain has returned back to their base.

Meet the second main villain: the crocodile goddess who served as the muscle of the group.

: Welcome back, Sis.

: …..

: …I found one… …It was the Bakeneko…

So she’s the one who Yamcha’ed Chen.

: “Dealt with,” hmm… The way you “deal with” people is on par with disasters, Sis… I pity that poor bakeneko…

What an overkill. She’s a crocodile with super strength while her opponent is a small cat.

: …..

: …Disasters? That’s rude…

: …I made sure to go easy on her… …She was cute, after all…

Ewww…. She’s also a creep. She needs to be kept far away from the poor cat.

: I-I see.

: (She is always so quiet, so it’s kind of unsettling to see her laugh…)

This is why Ms. Croc has so many “…” in her lines.

: I’m sure you ended up wrecking the place in the process, didn’t you?

: Erk…

: Good grief… You need to learn how to control your power, Sis.

: …..

: …..

: Same as you, Sis. The dog tracking us down got far enough to suspect we were deep in the Forest of Magic, so she went to deal with her.

We won’t be seeing the third goddess in this cutscene.

: Oh right, it was a kitsune, not a dog.

Kitsune. That means Yukari also found out where their base is.

: …..

: …A kitsune… Cute…

One: Cut that crap out! Two: Chen the bakeneko is cuter.

: …..

The goddesses also have their own servants.

Since the messenger turtle is unnamed, I’m going to call him Steve.

: …

Also, thank you for telling us what her name is.

: …Yeah…

: What do you need?

: Oh, that? There’s no need to worry, then.

: There isn’t?

That’s the name of the third goddess.

: Ah, I see.

: Indeed, we surely have nothing to fear if Lady Litos has gone to handle things. But were you already aware of the other intruders…?

: …

: …The… “other” intruders…?

: No, I wasn’t. Inform me.

: Yes, ma’am!

: It’s possible she’s sniffed out the existence of the Lakebed Temple.

They got a great intel. They’ve already found out we’re gunning for them.

: I see. So we’re finally exposed, huh? Fufufu.

: Lady Biotopos…?

: Thanks for you report. You can leave.

: Yes, ma’am!

See you, Steve. Watch out for any plumbers out there.

: So, she’s heading this way…

: …..

: … We’ll have to give them a proper welcome, then…

: You’re right, Sis.

: By the orders of the masters of the Lakebed Temple,

They have a pretty long name. I ain’t typing that.

: Guard turtle! Gatekeeper! And lastly, Three Servants!

Bio can extend her smoking pipe to ring the bell without needing to move. That pipe is perfect for a lazy person.

: Come to us!

The Three Servants arrives first.

They consists of a blowfish youkai.

A shellfish youkai.

And an octopus youkai.

: We have heeded your call!

The gatekeeper arrives next. She’s a crab youkai.

Lastly, the Guard Turtle drops from the ceiling.

: Some troublemakers are currently headed here to the Lakebed Temple. They intend to defeat us and put a stop to the incident.

: …This plan is a crucial ritual we have to perform after passing into fantasy…

Ritual? Are they trying to summon an aquatic eldritch monster by using the suffering of youkais?

: Repel these intruders with your full power.

: Matsuba, you will guard the gate! And Genjii, you will guard Genbu Ravine!

: In which case, we’ll put our housework on pause.

: We’ll switch over to guard duty instead.

: Enstrust the temple interior to us!

The fish maids will be fought before the main villain.

: Okay, I’ll take care of the gate, then.

The crab gatekeeper then teleport away.

: I’ll do my very best to meet your expectations!

The elderly turtle will be fought first. Don’t underestimate him just because he’s old.

: ….

: …The preparations have been made…

: That’s right. Okay, Hakurei shrine maiden and her companions…

Once we finally meet face-to-face, I’m going to slap you upside the head because this incident has gone for long enough!

Fun fact: Starting from this point on, all the bosses are either reptile or aquatic species.

The game knows this by giving us Aquatic/Reptile slayer on Sakuya’s first tier sword so that we can’t use her outdated sword to take advantage of the slayer effect.

Another fun fact: Why did I use such picture to depict the main villains? One: I’m too lazy to make multiple sprites to represent them. Two: I genuinely hates those fishes. Three: Because it’s funnier.

Next Time on Genius of Sappheiros: Be careful of Nintendo.

Isn't Genjii already Reimu's flying mount in the early games? Well, I guess a turtle's gotta eat, no shame in side gigs.

Stage 15 - Part 1

We’re gonna come after you evil reptiles!

Tenshi count as a major boss. Of course Akyuu got a new recipes for us after we defeat Tenshi.

: Lady Tenshi is a divine maiden who lives in Heaven. I hear that her divine powers are incredibly fearsome.

Divine? I only saw her throwing rocks.

: I’ll present you with these recipes to commemorate your hard work. I hope they help you resolve the incident.

We got the recipes for fifth tier unique weapons and armors.

Fifth tier equipments requires Star Fragment to craft. The yellow material can be found in the next stage.

Typeless damage? Magic Damage Cancel? How does that work?

The medium elemental armors are pretty good and relatively easy to craft.

That pipe looks familiar.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

The second part of Forest of Magic looks more sinister with its darker environment.

: But… what’s goin’ on here!?

We entered different section of the forest?

: The forest’s appearance has changed entirely… Just what is the meaning of this…?

: What could have happened within this short timespan…?

They’re gonna treat this as if the villain have transformed the forest into something worse.

: Things are definitely different than usual…

: Are the culprits responsible for this, too…?

: Most likely.

: Come to think of it, we still don’t know anything about their powers.

We’ll just gonna wing it and beat them down with brute force.

: This power… It’s definitely different than the power of Hourai. Just what IS it, though…?

: We’ll learn that naturally when we find them.

: Right.

: We’re heading to Genbu Ravine.

: By the way, why’s this place called Genbu Ravine, anyway?

We’re still at Forest of Magic 2, Nitori. We haven’t reached the ravine yet.

: The ravine’s made up o’ all these hexagonal columns.

Let me guess: The boss of the Genbu Ravine is the old turtle?

: So that’s why, then.

: I see. I can’t wait to see it!

I’d like to see if the game properly depicts the hexagonal rocks in the Genbu Ravine.

: Geez…

This game doesn’t reuse environment asset that much. Forest of Magic 1 and 2 have different appearances and stage gimmicks.

Yes. That is Super Mario-esque warp pipe. Entering it will also plays the familiar sound effect for entering the pipe.

BGM: Battle 2

It’s Kedama again. Green Kedama has 1400 HP and no resistances or weaknesses. It’s the second weakest enemy in this stage. Just be careful of its self-destruct when it’s low on HP.

It has 5% chance to drop Star Fragment.

I guess we’re no longer fighting fairies anymore. Alseid has 1800 HP, and weak to dark. Mid-high tier mages have AoE elemental magic. Hope that we’re lucky enough to not get struck with AoE spells.

The warrior enemies are called Oread. They all have 2000 HP and weak to dark. They have mid-level weapon skills. Sword and spear wielding Oread have AoE attacks, and axe wielding Oread hits very hard. Buff PDef and beat them down.

All Oreads have 4% chance to drop Star Fragment.

Harpies, eh? That’s a typical fantasy enemy. Harpyia has 1750 HP, 70 Eva, immune to earth, and weak to thunder and stab. By this point, you should already know how bird type enemies behave: Swoop that can inflict Daze to cancel someone’s turn. Her melee attack can inflict Silence, something we should watch out for as thunder spell remains the best way to kill pesky birds.

She has 4% chance to drop Star Fragment.

That enemy reminded me of alien from the game Contra. Punoton has 1100 HP, resists dark and weak to light. It is the weakest enemy in the stage. But hey, free EXP and potential Star Fragment drop (at 4% chance).

I hate that skeleton enemy. Spartoi has 2400 HP, immune to light and dark, resists slash and stab, and is only weak to earth. Its skill with sword is better than Oread. It has more PAtk and its skill includes Sonic Blade (quick casting attack), Meteor Shower (All-targeting AoE), and Extended Slash Barrage (Multihit attack skill). When I see a skeleton enemy, I immediately think that it’s weak to light or fire. Not that enemy. It’s so hard to kill.

I also hate that plant woman. She’s so annoying. Dryad has 2100 HP, near immunity to earth, resists water, thunder, slash, and stab, and is only weak to fire. She’s an annoying support enemy with skillset made for debilitating the party. She has Thorn Bind (AoE Paralysis infliction), and Enervation (PAtk & MAtk debuff). Res buff is almost required when fighting her. Prioritize killing her first before she can disable the party.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

We can’t explore this part of the underground yet. I’m guessing this is the shortcut.

It took me embarrassingly long time to obtain this treasure. I’m supposed to approach this closed of land from the south. I thought the land is blocked off from all sides.

This stage is so labyrinthine. The denseness of the forest, the multiple branching paths, and the warp pipes makes it easy for me to get lost while exploring it.

Another new shield for the CD sets.

Let’s explore the underground shall we.

By pressing this button, it unlocks 2 iron gates in the underground segment.

But entering one of the gate will cause to both the gates to be closed off again. So we need to find a way to reach the treasure without entering the gate that’s behind me.

BGM: Battle 2

There’s enemies exclusive to the underground section.

The Antlion Larva (giant insect in a quicksand) has 2600 HP, resists fire and earth, and weak to water. Its Quicksand is just like the HDD Crash from the Hard disk enemy. It’s an all-targeting attack that can inflict Erase to outright remove a character from a fight. Always have Sanae in the party at all times, her Res buff is far too valuable.

The scorpion is called Deathbringer. That’s a surprisingly badass name for a scorpion. It has 1500 HP, resists fire, earth, slash, stab, and is weak to fire. It’s tougher than the Antlion despite it being smaller. Its normal attack can inflict Severe Poison which can potentially kill anyone in one turn. Really dangerous stuff and why Res buff is super important.

poo poo! Another dragon type enemy. Elder Basilisk has 3600 HP, resists fire, water, earth, thunder, dark and is only weak to light. You know the mythical creature basilisk, right? It has PET Breath and DTH Breath. Petrify and Death are very dangerous status effect as it can instantly put you in death state. Again, have Sanae’s Res buff to prevent party wipe.

It has 20% chance to drop Star Fragment, the highest for drop the yellow material out of all enemies in the stage.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

Where am I?

So many paths. I don’t know where to go from here. I have like 10-15 minutes playtime of me just running around blindly not knowing where to go.

A silver chest. Gotta take note of this area.

Gah! An ambush! You dirty random encounter mushroom!

BGM: Battle 2

That’s a lot of annoying enemies. I need to burn lot of MP and Bomb stock to burst down the Dryad and Spartoi.

poo poo! I’m not prepared to face down angel miniboss. Kaleido Virtue has 3800 HP, 25 Divine Barrier, resists fire, water, earth, thunder, nearly immune to light, and is weak to dark. She can move twice in a row. Now that I got her info, I’m fleeing from this battle.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

There’s warp pipe in the middle of this area.

Can’t explore that place yet.

Almost missed the treasure. Gotta keep my eyes peeled for semi-hidden treasures.

Great. I’m back at the warp pipe where the yellow button is located.

It’s decent staff that boost water damage, and water resistance. But I have better staff from the Mindflayer on previous stage.

Press the button again and find the warp pipe that leads to the treasure.

I didn’t see this hidden treasure until the moment I took screenshots for making this update. And then, I booted up the game again and find Adamantite Shard inside the treasure.

This is a new area I haven’t explored.

The treasure contain a sword with +40 MDef. I have a sword with +40 Res and I think Res is more important at this point.

Okay. Gotta find a way to get at this unlocked gate.

After running around blindly again, it turns out that it’s actually located on the second warp pipe where we see the first yellow button.

This area marks the second half of the stage judging by the new enemy encountered.

BGM: Battle 2

Lizardman in a cave? I thought they reside on a mountain. It has 2300 HP, resists earth and strike and is weak to thunder. It wields spear. So it’s basically slightly stronger version of spear wielding warrior. Zap it with thunder and move on.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

Interacting with this lever will open up the closed off iron door and also close the previously opened door. The iron door to the left only leads to a dead end. No need to keep it opened.

Aha! I see you hidden treasure. This large armor adds stab resistance to its wearer.

Seeing the clear blue lake makes me wanna take a swim.

BGM: Battle 2

God freaking dammit! I really don’t like those 2 enemies.

The eye creature is Dogazer. It has 2700 HP, resists fire, water, earth, thunder, light, and dark and is weak to slash and stab. Its two most dangerous attacks are Gaze to inflict Magic Cancel to stop your magicians and healers, and Destruction Beam, a surprisingly dangerous mystic based attack. I hate that thing. It’s so hard to kill.

It has 6% chance to drop Star Fragment.

The Unicorn has 2500 HP, 999 MDef, and no resistance or weakness. That mythical creature is also annoying to fight. It has Skewer (Row targeting stab attack that deals low damage), Dark Wall (Column based dark magic), and the most annoying skill it has: Starlight Barrier (Nullify one instance of attack for its allies. Satori can learn it, but it costs 99 MP to cast and its cooldown is 9 turns). Since it has no weakness and can’t be attacked with magic, we’re left with beating it down with our weapon until it dies.

The presence of these 2 enemies can make random encounter lasts longer due to their durability and ability to interrupt our offense. This is why I don’t like that enemy.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

A spear with Deity (Angel & Demon) and Elemental slayer? Cool. No one in my party uses spear though as my party member are comfortable fighting with their unique weapon.

I recognize this area. We’re back at the previous underground area.

That’s a BAAAAD enemy formation. It’s not worth it trying to fight them.

Nice. Our first guaranteed Star Fragment. I used it to craft Sakuya’s fifth tier greatsword. I always upgrade her weapon since she’s my primary damage dealer.

This accessory is even better. It provides resistance to all element but mystic + Permanent status effect resistance. It’s really good.

Got the Silver Key. Now I gotta find the shortcut back to the beginning of the stage.

Back at the previous underground area, we’ll take the rightmost path and enter the warp pipe.

The pipe leads to the first area of the stage. With this, we secured the shortcut.

A small armor with resistance toward sleep, paralysis, and petrify. The mage that equip this armor won’t be disabled by those status effect.

Back at the previous underground area, we now take the center path.

Knife with HP Drain. It’s decent I guess.

From here, it’s just a straightforward path to the exit.

Now I know Punoton’s strength: It has [Element] Chaser. This makes Alseid + Punoton a very deadly combination of enemy to fight.

Oh hey, the second Star Fragment.

Now ruuuuuun!!!

A cutscene? I’m too mentally checked out to pay attention to the cutscene.

: W-What’s this…?

: A stone…? Maybe a statue…?

The third culprit created a statue of the plants and the warp pipe as well.

: What’s a statue doing here of all places…? What’s going on here…?

: Hey, that’s…!

Did you find another statue, Reimu?

: What’s the matter all o’ a sudden, Reimu?

Oh wow. That’s a lifelike statue of Yukari’s fox shikigami.

: It’s Yakumo Yukari’s kitsune shikigami…

: This… isn’t actually a statue, is it? It looks so real.

: This resembles how we found Chen on Youkai Mountain. In other words, this too, is the culprits’ doing…

So, I think you can guess what animal the third reptilian goddess is based off.

Craft some petrify resisting equipment. Noted.

: Eep… T-That’s one heck of a power…

: I’m sensing a small scoop! I’ve gotta write this down…

: Anyway, it looks like the culprits really aren’t messing around.

: Not to mention, there are apparently multiple of them.

Just a little more. I can do this.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

Run! Evade the enemy encounter and just go straight to the exit.

Axe sucks!

BGM: Battle 2

Officer Daemon. 4200 HP, near immunity to dark, resists fire, water, earth, thunder, and all physical type and weak to light only. Now gently caress off!

Whoa! That’s a huge tree! Ent has 4900 HP, near immunity to earth, resists water, thunder, slash, stab, and is only weak to fire. It has the same resistance and weakness as the Dryad. It’s really durable and can hits really hard, especially as it can use Headfist Charge without needing to charge the skill. Fortunately, it only appears in the last segment of the stage.

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

Finally. A safe area.

The Orichalcum Shard is right there in the open.

Whew… This stage is rough. Hopefully, I can fend off the boss without much trouble.

Stage 15 - Boss

BGM: Forest of Magic 2 Theme

I don’t like this stage. Let’s just get it over with.

This time, I’m using Reimu as my magic attacker since I also need her barrier spellcard for the upcoming fight. Byakuren buff/debuff is borderline required for the fight.

And a physical attacker with very high PAtk.

Right then. I’m ready.

: There’s something blatantly fishy about that pipe…

It’s a trap. Definitely a trap.

: There’s a sign here, too.

: Let’s see here…

Ah. Reverse psychology. Saying “don’t” will only tempt people to do otherwise.

: What the heck…?

: Ooh! This gets my reporter blood rushing! I can’t just NOT look…!

Let me guess? There’s a piranha plant inside that pipe, waiting to chomp anyone who look inside the pipe.

: Come now, Aya. The sign clearly said not to…

: But I’m curious…!

: Hmm, what should we do…?

: Let sleeping dogs lie.

I like Reimu’s no bullshit attitude. She just want to get it over with.

: You’re probably right.

Turns out, the next boss is the one inside the pipe waiting to ambush us.

???: Yer actually gonna IGNORE it!?

: Who’s there!?

It’s the old turtle guy.

: A-A turtle…?

: A turtle came out of the pipe. That’s, uh, weird…

Yeah. The turtle is clearly bigger than the pipe.

: This turtle’s strangely hung-up over something so small.

: So why’d ya go and ignore it!?

Because it’s clearly a trap.

: Why do you see the need to get mad over this? We only did as the sign instructed.

: ‘Cause my dang trap went to waste!

Make more effective trap then. Like rolling barrel trap or spinning flame trap.

: You’re giving us mixed messages, old man…

: No, I get him.

Reimu is rude as always.

: !

: Y-You’re…!

: What?

: Hm? Come to think of it, I feel like I’ve seen this turtle somewhere before…

Really? I’ve never seen an old turtle in Gensokyo before.

: Of course ya have.

I see Marisa’s reputation preceded her.

: Mmh? You know me?

: I don’t recognize this thing.

: Come on now, ya HAVE to remember me!

: You heard him, Reimu. Do you really not know him?

: No, I really don’t. A stingy turtle that looks like he’d have that old person smell? There’s no way I know this thing.

Wow… She’s even ruder than usual.

: Argh…!

: (Reimu sure does get up to some awful things…)

Yes, she is. She’s definitely NOT a heroine material.

: “Catch”…?

: Ahh, I remember now!

: “Pet”…?

: Let’s see… I think his name was Genjii?

: That’s right, you got it! I’m Genjii!

Genjii used to be Reimu’s companion in the old games back when the game is in PC-98. It’s a very old computer.

: Ah… I remember now. Yeah, I guess you used to be around.

: You “guess”…?

She totally forgot about your existence. To be fair though, so does most of Touhou fans since he never appears after Touhou game number 5.

: Ahem. Well, it looks like you finally remembered me. It’s been a long time, Miss Reimu.

: Yeah. It has, Genjii.

He last appeared in year 1998. This game is released on Steam in year 2022.

: But that aside, I can’t help but wonder about something…

: What is it?

: Just what do you think you’re doing, trying to catch your master in a trap? Depending on your answer, well… Fufufu.

You basically abandoned him. So you’re no longer his master.

: Mrgh…

: You and I are master and pet no more.

But you just admit that you’re her pet.

: Hmph! I don’t like your attitude! Know your place, you decrepit old turtle!

You’re way ruder than him, Reimu.

: Y’know, in the first place… I haven’t seen ya around in ages, Genjii. What happened…?

: Uh-huh.

: Uh-huh.

: Uh-huh.

Hahahahaha… What the gently caress, Reimu?! She’s such a massive bitch.

: I gotcha.

: As cruel as always…

: Ooh… I still can’t get over how heartless ya were…

: (Oh dear, I’m sad that I’m actually sympathizing with him…)

Yeah. He’s kinda pitiful. But he’s part of the bad guy. So…

: So? What, was this trap supposed to be your payback?

: Don’t be so quick to judge me poorly. I’m not that kind of a petty turtle.

: I can’t judge you any more poorly than I already have anyway.

: Mrgh!

: Very well, then.

: If ya intend to go any further, I’ll stop ya by force. Prepare yourselves!

If you do try to stop us, then I’ll smack you head until you can’t get up.

: Your current master… I see.

: So this odd phenomenon occurring in the Forest of Magic right now… Is that your master’s doing?

: That is correct.

: What powers does your master have?

: One question after another, eh? Do ya really think I’d just tell ya everything?

I can answer that: One of them is super strong. One of them can petrify people. The last one, I don’t know.

: You cheeky turtle. You were caught by me in the past. Do you really think you can take all of us on?

: I’m not the same me I once was! I’ve gained new power upon meetin’ my new master!

: And on top o’ that, these orders are FROM my master – the one who saved me. She gave me a new life when I was barely scrapin’ by in Genbu Ravine.

: “Fight if ya can win, don’t fight if ya can’t…” This ain’t like that. This is a fight I HAVE to win!

Sad back story. But you’re siding with the villain. So…

: you decrepit old turtle!?

Reimu kick that old turtle and trap him between the pipe and the tree so that he’ll bounce endlessly.

: Mrgh…! How dare ya make a mockery out o’ me!

Unlike regular koppa, he can stop himself from bouncing and get up on his own.

: I’ll pay ya back for all those years o’ mistreatment and make ya regret bein’ so conceited!

: (So he DOES just want payback…)

: Interesting. Go on, then, why don’t you show me this “new power” of yours.

: I will repay my debt to Lady Biotopos…

I’ll strip you of your tough shell and throw it into the sky!

BGM: Boss 2

I may not be a fan of Super Mario Bros franchise, but I should be able to defeat a turtle boss.

Genjii has 30000 HP, 500 PDef, 300 MDef, resists slash, and stab and is weak to light and dark. Look at his defenses. Goddamn.

First thing first, before buffing Sakuya’s attack power, buff her Res first with the more powerful Byakuren’s single target buff. It’ll be a shame Sakuya’s buff got dispelled.

The main problem with defeating Genjii is getting through his massive defense. He takes 0 damage from magic attack even if we target his weaknesses and physical attack deals scratch damage to him. We probably ran out of MP first before we can deplete his HP.

He’s charging his strongest attack. It’s a good time to use Reimu’s barrier spellcard on the next turn.

He will use tier 2 breath attack as his ultimate attack. Breath attack ignore 75% of the target MDef. This is why we need Reimu’s breath nullifying barrier.

Genjii favors water and mystic elemental attack. If you’re wary of his attack, you can add water and mystic resistance to your character to reduce damage taken.

The best way to get through his defenses is to debuff it to nothing with Byakuren’s PDef/MDef debuff. Byakuren’s debuff is so powerful it can reduce his defense to practically nothing.

We can also debuff his attack power to reduce him to a helpless hatchling.

Sakuya’s 2-Handed Sword ultimate weapon skill has a really good attack animation.

Sakuya + Byakuren’s Light Brand + PAtk buff = really big number. I love seeing big numbers.

Dammit! He removed all his debuffs. Gotta reapply defense debuff to him before we can kill him.

That’s it! Once again, Byakuren and Sakuya saves the day for us.

BGM: Victory

Thank goodness he never use Vortex (Inflict Dispel to all combatants). Otherwise, this fight would take longer to clear.

: Hmph. Can’t say I’m surprised.

: Mrgh… Ya really ARE strong… But I’m the guard turtle of the Lakebed Temple!

Yeaaah… You’re already beaten. Go away!

: Ugh, geez, you’re such a pain!

: We don’t have the time to deal with you! Just let me exterminate you already!

Reimu kicks him again and trap him between the pipe and the tree. Like last time, he can stop himself from bouncing endlessly.

: This again? What a joke. This won’t be enough to beat me--

: You can’t stop me like this!

: Then how about this?

Looks like she has another to get rid of that stubborn old turtle.

: Did you know… what happens if you kick a shell right next to a pipe?

: D-Don’t tell me…!?

: A-A-A-Ah…

The answer is: he get knocked away like a Smash Bros character.

: Aaaaah!?

: Geez, he wasted a lot of our time for a turtle.

: (Oh my… I don’t even know who’s in the wrong anymore…)

Genjii. He’s with the villain.

Announcement

I’m gonna take a hiatus from this LP because I’m gonna spent most of my free time playing this game.

Fans of the franchise has been following Kiryu’s story for 19 years. And this game is very likely will be his last outings as the leads. This is why I want to play this game and experience his story right until the end, even if it will end tragically. This is the first time I’m buying a full 80$ game at full price. I think I’m gonna have a lot of fun playing it.

Stage 16 - Part 1

We can see the next stage from here.

But before that, we’ll visit Akyuu since she has new recipes to offer.

: Genjii is capable of blocking any attack. I hear that he has an incredibly hard shell. You must have had a very difficult battle.

Nah. Not really. He’s lacking in attack power. Once I soften his shell, he’s done for.

: I’ll present you with these recipes to commemorate your hard work. I hope they help you resolve the incident.

No unique weapon and armors here. Instead we get new recipes for shields and status effect resisting accessories.

Next stage: Genbu Ravine.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

There’s the famous hexagonal rock formation of the ravine.

: This is Genbu Ravine.

: Huh… So this place really WAS here, then… I’m surprised I never realized, living so close.

: Like I said, it’s a hidden spot only a few know about.

Really? You’d think a ravine with a distinctive rock formation would be pretty noticeable.

: ‘Course, humans and youkai don’t really go into the Forest o’ Magic. Thanks to that, this place has become a sorta myth-like landmark.

: Saying that, there’s a river running through it, so wouldn’t it connect with somewhere else?

: Yeah, I think it joins up with one on Youkai Mountain.

Really? I didn’t see any river connecting it and Youkai Mountain on the overworld.

: So if I’d fallen asleep in a different river, I could have ended up here instead of at the Misty Lake…

In an alternate universe, Nitori become the last recruitable character in the game instead of Byakuren.

: What do you mean?

: Nah, just talking to myself.

Yep. It feels distinctive enough.

: But would the culprits really be in such isolated place…?

: They may be here precisely BECAUSE it’s isolated…

: That turtle earlier was protecting this place, so his actions serve as good evidence backing Tenshi’s claims. I think we got the right place.

: In which case, just where would we find them here…?

: Likely in a lake.

: The lake…?

: I surmise we’ll find that temple – our foes’ stronghold – at the bottom of a lake here.

Under the lake
Under the lake
Darling it's better
Down where it's wetter

: I see, that makes sense.

That lines up with what I could see of Genjii’s heart. I don’t think there’s any mistaking it.

: Hmm, but was there even a lake here to begin with…? I get the feelin’ there wasn’t…

: Tenshi said our enemies were new to Gensokyo, right? Maybe a lake passed into the fantasy along with them, just like how ours did.

They teleported a whole lake?

: That certainly does sounds plausible.

: We know what we’re looking for now, so let’s get going.

Right then. Time to find the lake.

Oh. We still to check our main villain.

: …..

: …They should be nearing Genbu Ravine soon… I wonder how Genjii is doing…?

I think he’s enjoying the view of Gensokyo from the sky.

: Genjii is my highly-talented servant. I imagine he’s fighting off the Hakurei shrine maiden and her allies right about now.

: ……

: …You have a lot of faith in him…

: I guess I do.

: Lady Anastasis! Lady Biotopos! I-I have an emergency report!

It’s the messenger turtle. I forgot his name already.

: What is it?

: Lord Genjii, guard turtle of the Lakebed Temple, was defeated by the Hakurei shrine maiden!

Bio’s diamond shaped mouth, though. It looks funny.

: She’s currently proceeding through Genbu Ravine and heading this way!

: …..

: …Okay… Good work. You can leave…

: Yes, ma’am!

I think I named him with generic western name.

: She actually beat Genjii… My, oh my. Well done, Hakurei shrine maiden.

He’s just an old turtle. Beating him isn’t a notable achievement in my opinion.

: …..

: …Looks like our observations were off the mark…

: How interesting. It’ll be fun seeing how far she can make it.

At least you’re having fun. While me as the player and Reimu were treating the incident as an annoying chore.

: …..

: …Yeah…

: …..

: She should have already defeated her target by now, so she must be wandering about somewhere or other… Goodness.

Nice of you to tell us of your full name.

Meet the last member of the Gorgon sister, Litos. She’s the youngest of the trio and also the strongest and the one leading the whole group. Just from her name alone, you could probably guess what her power is.

: …Welcome back, Litos…

: Hey, Sis, Bio. I’m home.

: That was a little mean, don’t you think?

: I’m not so lax to sit here and chat at a time like this, unlike you two.

: Honest to a fault like always.

: You’ve got such a cute face, Litos, but you know that you’ll only attract mean like Zeus with that attitude, right?

I think you should find better man. Zeus was an rear end in a top hat.

: Wha!?

Litos’ temper tantrum is pretty hilarious. Nothing says “fearsome villain” like throwing a fit like a child.

: Oh…? Getting embarrassed, are you?

: No, I’m NOT!

: Ah, yes, of course not. You’re absolutely right, Litos. You’re not cute, you don’t need a man, and you’re certainly not embarrassed. Of course.

It’s a good Gensokyo is very lacking in male population.

Temper tantrum Mk.2

: …..

: …You’re cute, Litos… Fufufufufu…

I agree with this creepy crocodile, for once.

: …Look, Sis, I’m sorry…

You got the whole predator vibe with you.

: Ahaha! You really are worth teasing, Litos.

: Could you stop toying with your little sister…?

She’s an easy target due to her short temper.

: Ahaha, sorry, sorry.

: …..

: …So how did it go, Litos…?

She’s the one who took out Ran.

: But that kitsune was stronger than I expected. Right now, she’s immersing herself in some quiet forest therapy.

She can turn people into stone. Her middle name IS Medousa. Gotta prepare some petrify resisting accessory.

: So the last dog still goes uncaptured, huh…

Yukari is incredibly powerful. No way she’s gonna get stomped by chumps like you.

: …..

: …She’s a tough one…

: She got her sights set on us. She’ll appear of her own accord sooner or later.

: The Hakurei shrine maiden is apparently on her way, too. It seems she’s finally captured us within her web.

She’s not a Spider-Woman, you know.

: …..

: …This is getting interesting…

: Yeah. We three are finally assembled here.

: They should give us a good time.

: …..

: …Fufufu. Yeah…

: Let’s enjoy watching them struggle.

You want some challenge? I’ll give you one! After that, I’m giving you the boot!

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Compared to the labyrinthine Forest of Magic 2, Genbu Ravine is easier to navigate. This stage doesn’t even have a gimmick.

The enemies here are represented by a squid. Makes sense since the main villain’s henchman are aquatic creature.

BGM: Battle 2

The humanoid enemies has been replaced by centaurs. Look at those guys! Those centaurs are pretty muscular. The Centaurus have 2400 HP and is weak to dark. Those guys’ hits hard and able to use advanced weapon skills. They all can use AoE attack skills. Try to prioritize taking out the axe wielding because they’re the most dangerous of the bunch. One AoE axe weapon skill very nearly cause a total party wipe.

They all have 4% chance to drop Star Fragment.

Another bird type enemy. Siren have 2050 HP, 70 Eva, immune to water and earth and is weak to thunder and stab. Most bird type enemy almost always has Swoop, which can stun your character. Aside from that, they can inflict sleep and confusion.

I don’t get why the game design some of the female enemies like that. All the main characters, the heroes and the villains are all fully covered.

I really hate giant insects! They’re disgusting creatures that should be exterminated. The centipedeis called Oomukade, it has 2900 HP, resists strike, and weak to earth and thunder. It can cause earthquake, and it has slash based attack based attack skills that can inflict stat debuff. Honestly, it’s not too troublesome since I can blast it away with thunder.

Tarantula has 2500 HP, 200 PDef, resist all physical type and is weak to earth. It can shoots web to inflict slow or paralysis and its normal attack can cause poison. It’s tankier that the centipede, so it’s more annoying to fight in my opinion.

It has 8% chance to drop Rune Axe. It’s the first axe that I considered good because so far, it’s the only axe that doesn’t have garbage accuracy.

There’s the mage centaur. Even when he pursues the path of magic, he still doesn’t skip workout day. Centaurus Mage has 2100 HP, and is weak to dark. Beware of AoE magic attack.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

The Ravine is a pretty good looking stage. I prefer this stage than the one on the previous stage.

Accuracy +45 accessory. Accuracy is important for Sakuya as we want her very powerful attack to land accurately.

There’s a pathway hidden behind this waterfall.

The treasures inside this room contains a really good items. Especially the +45 Inf Accessory. This one definitely goes to Byakuren.

Another Star Fragment. Nice. Still don’t know what to use it for though since most fifth tier equipment don’t interest me.

Ohoho! Now this is some good stuff. Thankfully, I noticed the partially hidden chest.

There’s no levers that can be used to open that locked door. We’ll leave it be for now.

Res +30. I love those third tier stats increasing accessories.

More treasures!

BGM: Battle 2

Heh. A miniature Mental Flayer. Petit Flayer has 1600 HP, resists fire, water, earth, light, dark, mystic, and is only weak to stab. Its attack is weaker than the regular Flayer. Its Mental Blast only target a single party member and I think it has lower chance to inflict Instant Death. Nitori should be able to kill it in one hit.

This dark looking enemy looks nasty. Persephone has 2650 HP, immune to dark, resists fire, water, earth, thunder, and is only weak to light. She has a good chance of inflicting Instant Death and she can screw our party by creating a Field that can boost Instant Death for the enemies AND prevents healing (basically Sakuya’s Field effect but stronger). Sakuya’s fifth tier greatsword has ghost slayer, so use Sakuya to wreck that enemy, fast.

Ah. gently caress! I absolutely hate this enemy. Sorcerer Skull, or rather, Sorcerer Hein from Final Fantasy III has 3500 HP, 80 Eva, high PDef & MDef, and has no resistances or weaknesses. It has Hein’s signature ability of Barrier Shift, which changes its elemental resistances and make it resists all attributes except for one element which become its sole weakness. The weakness is randomized every time it casts Barrier Shift. Fighting him effectively requires Patchouli, who can use magic of all elements and Satori, who can use scan to detect its weakness. Without those two, we’re left with using brute force, slowly depleting its HP. On the offensive, it can use magic of most elements that hits hard enough to kill anyone in 1-2 hits.

It’s not worth fighting it due to how hard it is to kill it. It doesn’t provide that much to justify how long it takes to kill it. I just run away whenever a random encounter contains this enemy.

It’s Catoblepas from Final Fantasy V. It has 4100 HP, resists all physical type, fire, earth, and is only weak to thunder. It can counter physical attack with Glare, which can inflict Petrify. It’s surprisingly easy to kill in my opinion.

Back then when I played FFV, I was a little kid that lack knowledge of strategy. I didn’t know about its counter ability and I got wiped out. But now, I’m better at playing JRPG games.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Okay, I think I can now craft Orichalcum and Adamantite.

I don’t think there’s any reason this are exist. It’s not like we can jump now to the river.

A golden door. Can’t believe we’re almost done with this stage.

The gold key should be in this area. This is the only place I haven’t explored yet.

Agi +45. I want Byakuren to be able to casts her powerful single target buff before my main attacker can acts. Sanae doesn’t need Agi as her casting speed is already very fast.

AAAAAHHH!!! The demon type miniboss got even scarier.

Now that I got the gold key, the hardest part after that is escaping from the enemies. It took me quite some time to get past them as the random encounter almost always have Sorcerer Skull in it and I really do not want to fight it.

It’s the last stretch. We’re almost done with this stage.

Switching this lever unlocks a shortcut that leads back to the starting area of the stage.

Dammit! The angel type miniboss is now an angelic futuristic robot!? Cool design, though.

Gold Nugget is of the important material to craft accessory.

Dammit! I didn’t bring Aya for this Yukkuris fight.

Surprisingly, the Yukkuris doesn’t try to escape at all. Guess this is one of my lucky day.

And I also got Yukkuri Medal (User EXP gain +10%) from this fight. I’m definitely saving the game after this fight.

The stage is short. Okay, now this is become of my favorite stage.

Let’s see what kind of fish I get to fight in the next update.

Stage 16 - Boss

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Time to bust the boss!

I’m using Youmu as the primary physical attacker for this boss fight. No need for special strategy.

After all, this upcoming boss is actually easier than the previous boss.

I’m going to be blunt. The water texture looks real BAD.

: Here it is – the lake!

: Ooh, so there really was a lake. I don’t think this was here before.

We have no point of reference to compare. So we’ll just take your word for it.

: Anyway, this lake certainly looks to be on the deep side.

Anyone up for a swim?

: With this depth, it’s not strange to imagine a temple or two down there.

: No, I think two would definitely be strange…

No need to worry about that. There’s only one villainous aquatic group.

: The temple’s within our grasp. We’re going into the lake right away.

: Man, good think it’s the middle of summer. This would be hell in winter.

Do the aquatic youkai have a natural resistance against cold?

: Indeed. This’ll actually be rather refreshing.

: Yeah, yeah, let’s just go.

But wait. There’s the stage boss.

The boss appears from the ground.

: Who are you…?

She’s a matsuba crab youkai. She’s basically Meiling if she was a crab.

: The gatekeeper of the Lakebed Temple… I see.

: You’re the Hakurei shrine maiden and co., right?

: Under the orders of my masters--

Yeah, yeah. I’ll just beat you up and step over you, anyway.

: The orders of your masters… Is that so. And just what are your masters plotting by causing such a fiendish incident?

: I don’t know.

: Huh? Come on, don’t lie to us. You must know something if they gave you orders.

: …No, it appears she’s speaking the truth.

: What?

: Sorry, but I don’t care about the incident or my masters’ plan. I don’t really know anything.

She’s just a gatekeeper. No way are the masters trusting her with important info.

: What a deadbeat of a gatekeeper you are. I feel sorry for your masters.

: Shut it.

: I’m kind of seeing a certain shinigami in her…

: Yeah, I see what ya mean.

Are you guys comparing the crab to Komachi, stage 7 boss?

: What are you talking about?

: Just talking to ourselves.

: ?

: Anyway, that makes this simple, then. Let us pass on through. A deadbeat gatekeeper who hates trouble shouldn’t mind that, right?

Matsuba expressing how serious she is at fulfilling her job by cutting the nearby rock in two.

: Wha!?

: What incredible sharpness...!

She’s cheating! Scissors aren’t supposed to beat Rock in Rock-Paper-Scissors.

: You’re not getting through.

: Hey! What are you doing acting so serious, you deadbeat!?

: There’s one thing I’ve decided for myself.

: While it’s true that I don’t care about the incident or my masters’ plan,

: That’s how I repay my debt to them--

: That’s the rule I made for myself!

I see. You’re the type of person who blindly follow your master no matter what and can’t think for themselves.

: I can’t really tell whether she’s a slacker or a hard worker.

Try fanatically devoted.

: But I can feel her firm resolve.

: If you say you’re going to trespass into the Lakebed Temple…

What a cute threat.

: Crab claws…

: Oh, so you were a crab…

: Crab? That sounds delectable. Lady Yuyuko would be jumping for joy if she were here.

Cannibalism, yo.

: Hey, stop looking at me like I’m food. I’m TRYING to actually act--

Hey! Cut that poo poo out or I’m gonna loving break your claws!

: W-Wow…

: Not even my Roukanken compares to that…

Byakuren. Can I request some attack buff for Youmu here?

: My crab claws’ blades are unrivaled and can slice anything apart.

What the hell is a ‘hihhirokane’?

One Google search later reveals that it’s some kind of legendary Japanese metal used to craft legendary sword or armor.

: If you want to get by me, then you’d better be ready for that.

: …Looks like you’re pretty strong, huh? But if you’re this strong, I don’t see why you’re obeying the culprits behind this incident. Care to explain?

: …..

Matsuba idly opens and closes her claw as she monologues.

: Gensokyo is something of an inland island, so we were forced to live as an inferiors here.

: …..

: Our masters were the ones who gave us a new place to live. The vibrant lives we’re living now are all thanks to them. So we owe them tremendous debt.

: If it means protecting our new lives and our masters--

Cool backstory. But your masters are trying to kill all the youkais. So gently caress ‘em!

: I see. It looks like we both have circumstances that won’t let us back down.

: In which case--

: Looks that way. In that case--

Nobody like you should just step aside!

BGM: Boss 1

Let’s get this over with. Matsuba has 13000 HP, resists all physical type and is weak to thunder. Yeah, she’s weaker than the previous boss. Genjii has like 30000 HP in comparison.

She’s all about hard hitting slash attack and a bit of water. Nothing that Alice can’t block. She does able to inflict debilitating status effect like paralysis and Instant Death though. But it’s easily mitigated with Sanae’s Res buff.

Give Thunder Brand and PAtk buff toward Youmu, have Patchouli increase thunder Land Power, and then rip the boss to pieces.

BOOM! That’s about half her HP gone in one strike.

I’m leaving the finishing blow to you, Patchouli.

BGM: Victory

That’s weird. Usually, bosses give so much Power to the point of guaranteeing P Level up.

AAAAAAH!!! Trapezohedron! Material for crafting sixth tier equipment.

: And just as expected, we won.

: Our fight’s finished. Now get out of the way like a good loser.

: Argh…

Yeah, this isn’t the last time we’ve seen of her.

: It looks like these guys have pretty tight bonds. We’re probably in for a rough time in the temple itself, too.

: Well, regardless, that’s one obstacle out of the way.

Stage 17 - Part 1

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

We’re immediately sent into the next stage: Genbu Lake. There’s no cutscene or anything.

Might as well check the new enemies standing in our way.

BGM: Battle 2

I wish the game would’ve used Ariel from Little Mermaid to depict this enemy. Mermaid has 2650 HP, greatly resists fire, water, earth, and is weak to thunder. She has Tail Slap that can Topple someone and cancel their turn, an all-targeting water based attack that can debuff PDef, and she can fill up Water Land Power, which is dangerous as half the enemy benefits from that. I’d want to say “take her down first”, but there are other enemies that are more dangerous/ annoying than her.

She has 7,5% chance to drop Star Fragment.

Expect many aquatic enemies in this aquatic stage. Giant Crab has 3000 HP, 350 PDef, resists fire, water, slash, stab, and is weak to thunder. It hits hard, quite durable, and it can inflict stats debuff. Buff your PDef and hit it until it dies, preferably with thunder magic.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

New environment. Where’s the giant lake though? I haven’t seen it.

It’s fortunate that they all can breathe underwater. Just don’t think too much about it.

BGM: Battle 2

A seahorse lady and a water tornado? The water tornado is called Water. It has 1900 HP, immune to water, resists stab and strike, and is weak to fire. Usually, lesser elemental enemies are the weakest enemy in the stage. Not this one. Its physical hits surprisingly hard, it can kill anyone in about 2-3 hits. Sakuya’s 5th tier greatsword has an elemental slayer, use those to kill it fast.

The seahorse lady is Otohome (Huh? Isn’t it supposed to be Otohime?). She has 3300 HP, resists fire, water, thunder, light, and is weak only to dark. I hate dragon type enemies because they’re hard to kill. On the offensive side, she has water breath and also AoE all stats debuff. Her skills are very dangerous, which is not a good thing considering her durability.

On the plus side, I obtained Mokou’s best skill in the entire game. Fujiyama Volcano is a single target fire based skill that deals very high damage and has a chance of Scorching her opponent and cancelling their turn. This skill is an excellent boss killer, especially against boss weak to fire or strike. Just give Mokou Bomb+ accessory and have her spam that skill until her foe is dead.

Yeah, sure game! Whatever you say.

And that’s the elite elemental enemy. Undyne has 4500 HP, 200 MDef, immune to water, and weak to fire. Magic is almost useless against her. Use physical based fire attack (Hello Fujiyama Volcano). Surprisingly, her attack isn’t as dangerous as I would expect. Her water based AoE isn’t all that dangerous. She does however has Refresh, a healing skill that can heal around 1000 HP and also cure permanent status effect.

I do get plenty of Star Fragment in this stage. I don’t know what to use it for though.

Ah, crap! Freaking shielder! Adamantoise has 3700 HP, 500 PDef, greatly resists fire, slash, stab and is weak to water. Its mere presence on the enemy team will cause them to live much longer since it can cover its teammates and soak up damage with its immense durability. If there’s Mermaid on the enemy side, the Mermaid can indirectly help you with her Water Land Power+ since the Adamantoise will take more from its weakness.

Fortunately, it is rare to find.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Suspicious. I bet the enemies are hiding something inside that cave.

Spoiler: The cave contains basic crafting materials.

But the Evasion +30 accessory on the other hand. Aya can just equip the 3 version of Eva increasing accessories for +60 Evasion. With that, she can dodge almost all physical attacks that’s coming her way.

The spike gate is raised the moment we passed through them. This applies to all spike gates that’s in the area. The reset its state, we need to re-enter this room from the previous area.

Fortunately, we don’t need to interact with this stage gimmick since we can find other ways to get behind the other spike gates.

Aaah… We’re back to the surface.

We can get back to the starting area after opening this iron gate.

You know game, you’re making it too obvious that there’s something behind that enemy.

BGM: Battle 2

poo poo! I hate these enemies! Prototype has 3100 HP, immune to light and dark, resists fire, earth, thunder, slash, and stab and is weak to water. Not only it is hard to kill due to its resistances, but it also has a dangerous attack called Revolution Breath. Breath based attack are getting more dangerous since it ignores 75% of your MDef, meaning that Alice can’t shield the party from breath attack. If you eat too many of that attack, you’re going down.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

I knew it. It’s hiding a secret pathway.

I haven’t seen any golden door in the stage. We’ll hold onto this key until we find it.

This medium armor is really good. It gives resistance against fire, water, earth, and thunder. Now who should I give this armor to?

BGM: Battle 2

Go away you stupid sorcerer!

We can encounter the enemies from the previous stage in the last area of the stage. This means we can encounter giant insect and spider while underwater.

That’s a lot of mini flayers! I hope it wouldn’t instant kill Nitori.

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Okay, we can proceed forward.

Huh. That was fast. This stage is surprisingly short.

First, I’m gonna take a break, then I grind my level, and after that, we’re beating the stage boss.

Her powerful single target buff is really really good. She will most likely stay on the frontline during major fights unless the player is doing a self-imposed challenge run.

Stage 17 - Boss

BGM: Genbu Lake Theme

Grinding’s done. Time to take out the boss!

I’m using an offense-oriented strategy in this fight. I’m using Nitori as the Commander for her 3-Bombs party wide single hit shield.

Hopefully, the boss won’t screw me over.

This is it, the temple where the main bad guys resides.

: W-Whoa…

: It’s huge…

: How magnificent…

: I see, so it’s one of those Western temples from the outside world, hmm? Our newly-passed temple’s style certainly clashed with what we got here in Gensokyo.

Specifically, this temple originated from Greece.

: Our home is rather similar though.

: I suppose.

Not really. The Scarlet Devil Mansion denizen came from Europe, I think. Different country.

: But thanks to thanks to that, we can make a solid guess as to what kind of enemies we’re up against here.

: Whaddya mean by that?

: You’re so dense.

: If you weigh this temple against what Lady Tenshi said, there’s but one answer. Am I correct?

: Right.

: …Whaddya mean by that?

: Good grief…

: Western gods…

That doesn’t reveal anything though? Saying that the main culprit is an aquatic youkai would give more intel.

: I’ve run into all sorts o’ youkai and gods, but I’ve never seen a Western one before.

: Gods from a different culture, huh… Wonder just what kind of enemies we’re talking about here…

: Even more of a reason to be on our guards…

: Let’s go pay a visit to these Western gods or whatever.

Only Reimu would think that fighting gods is a non-issue.

Entering the enemy’s territories isn’t going to be that easy.

: T-That was…!

: No way…!

Yep. It’s that crab again. We haven’t record her stats in the bestiary after all.

: You’re that crab, uh…!

: …..

: Uh… What was your name again?

: It’s Matsuba! Kurenai Matsuba!

She’s nobody who isn’t worth remembering.

: Yeah, that’s it! What do you want, crab? I thought you’d already turned tail and ran.

: (I JUST gave you my name…)

: Anyway, I told you – I’m the gatekeeper of the Lakebed Temple. I’m not letting you enter the temple’s threshold!

: You just don’t know when to give up. We already settled things with a fight. Now be a good loser and get out of the way!

: Yeah, we settled things. Just once, at Genbu Ravine. But that win only counted there.

What a sore loser. Most bosses have the dignity to admit defeat after being knocked down (The other one who doesn’t do that is Momiji, who I hate).

: For the sake of my masters,

Shut up! I wish that there’s a stage with no boss.

: No matter how many times we fight, it’s gonna end the same.

: The situation is the same as before. Just what do you think you can do all alone?

Oh…

: !?

There’s two bosses we need to beat. This is quite troublesome.

: Thanks, Genjii.

: You’re that turtle, uh…!

: …..

: Erm… What was it again?

: And we knew each other BEFORE that, dangit!

: Oh, we did?

Reimu is an rear end in a top hat!

: (Just what’s flowing through this shrine maiden’s head…?)

: (She can’t remember anything she’s not interested in, huh…)

: Genjii! It’s Genjii! The guard turtle of the Lakebed Temple!

: You don’t know when to give up, either. I thought you’d already retired from battle.

I hate boss rematch!

: Hmph! Don’t go doubtin’ my vigor. Ya know what they say, right?

Cranes and turtles don’t live that long, though?

: And that means you’re relentlessly stubborn… why, exactly?

: Q-Quiet, whippersnapper!!

: Anyway, us temple guardians are here together now. And now we’re goin’ to perform yer last rites!

: Prepare yerselves!

I already did prepare myself.

: It’s nice that you’re in such high spirits and all…

I already beat you guys once. So I know all about your weaknesses.

: Don’t go underestimatin’ us. We can fight to our full ability in our domain down here in the water!

: I’m not the same as before, not even close. And I won’t let this fight go the same way!

You guys got powerup? So…? It’s no big deal for me.

: Fufu, it’s interesting you’d say that. You two aren’t the only ones in your domain. Wanna have a go and see which species is superior?

I’m sorry, Nitori. But you’re not strong enough to be my pick for the boss fight. Sakuya or Youmu are better physical attacker compared to you.

: That’s quite the declaration, freshwater dweller…

: Fine, then let’s begin. Round two of our fight starts now!

: You forgot something.

I’ll make sure you won’t get up after this fight.

: I’ll show you, then…

: I’ll give you a taste…

BGM: Boss 2

It’s the second boss theme. This’ll be a difficult fight.

Genjii has 15000 HP, 500 PDef, resists stab, and is weak to light and dark.

Matsuba has 26000 HP, 400 PDef, 150 MDef, resists all physical type and is weak to thunder.

Genjii is weaker thank the last time we fought him as he has 50% less HP. And despite him still retaining his massive PDef, his MDef has been reduced to 0. Matsuba meanwhile, has been greatly empowered, making her a great deal more dangerous.

Genjii’s attack is more dangerous than Matsuba’s. Alice has trouble guarding against his multi-target magic attack. With his lower HP and more dangerous attack power, it’s recommended taking Genjii down, first.

Since he has no MDef, magic attack is more effective to use against him.

And hey, Patchouli managed to proc her Last Word for free big damage.

Still, a fully buffed Sakuya will outdamage Patchouli.

The boss still have one last trick in their sleeve even after we fully depleted their HP. After being defeated, the boss will fully heal their teammates before they go down.

This can be circumvented by NOT attacking the other boss until their teammate is defeated.

Afterward, the remaining will enraged and starts using their more powerful attacks. Matsuba will also greatly buffs her Res and Eva. This buff CAN’T be dispelled.

Expect to see a lot of miss after she buff herself. This is despite my Sakuya having 160 Acc and Matsuba initially having no Eva at all. Her self-buff is just that powerful.

Magic attack is also the best way to defeat her as well.

You mother of gently caress! I absolutely hate Vortex. It inflict Dispel on all combatants, erasing the boss’ debuffs, and our party’s buffs. Forcing us to waste turns reapplying those buffs and debuffs. What’s worse is that there’s nothing stopping her from spamming Vortex to gently caress with us.

So I ended up in a stalemate. I can’t hurt her since she keeps dispelling my buffs, and she can’t hurt me because she can’t get through Alice’s massive defense. This fight is annoying. I should’ve brought Byakuren’s Perfect Resist to block the Vortex.

Okay, very powerful attack incoming. Nitori, protect your teammates with Camouflage!

The next turn after she charge her bomb, she’ll turn herself into lightning conductor, giving herself immunity against magic based thunder attack. And then she blast our party with very powerful thunder based attack.

The two bosses have a way to punish us for exploiting their weaknesses. Genjii will use high-end light and dark magic if he’s the last one standing.

Heh! You can’t dodge Sakuya’s physical attack if you’re time stopped.

Just one hit? Really?! And I just increased her multi-hit rate. I should’ve used 2x Full Moon Revenge for guaranteed 6-hit attacks.

Patchouli is the MVP in this boss fight.

Heh! There’s no one to heal since you’re the last one standing.

BGM: Victory

It took me 11 minutes to finish this boss fight. 8 minutes of it is spent trying to kill Matsuba. Turns out they’re not difficult at all. Just very annoying to kill.

: Hmph. Looks like you couldn’t win after all.

: Gack…!

While I kinda pity you for being dumped by Reimu, you did get in our way twice. So gently caress off!

: Y-You’re strong… We didn’t stand a chance…

Reimu, could you kick her aside so that we can enter the temple?

: Phew, that’s finally settled.

: Those two were frighteningly stubborn, weren’t they?

: If you think about it, it just means they were that loyal to their masters.

: I’m quite curious now, myself. I want to see just what kind of gods could instill such loyalty in their subjects.

: Indeed. Their words somewhat brings into question whether their masters are even good or evil.

: We’ll just have to keep going and find out.

Next time on Genius of Sappheiros: I hate the next stage!

Before finishing the update, I’d like to take a temporary detour to get something.

: How’s this formation sound? It should raise all five members’ magic.

: I call it “Final Burst”!

Why would you want to reduce your defense? And besides, there’s no point in making full magic based team.

: How’s this formation sound? It should raise the front line’s defense.

: I call it “Last Moriya”!

Most of the time, I only need one party member (Alice) to soak up damage.

: How’s this formation sound? It should provide the defense of an iron wall.

: I call it “Fence of Defense”!

See my explanation of Last Moriya.

We did beat a major boss.

: I hear that Matsuda is able to slice anything to ribbons. You must have had a very difficult battle.

: I’ll present you with these recipes to commemorate your hard work. I hope they you resolve the incident.

Hell yeah! The Kusanagi sword. The best weapon in the game.

There’s also recipes for sixth tier weapons, high tier armors and accessories as well. The unique weapons and accessories requires Trapezohedron, which is found throughout the entire of the final dungeon.

The unique weapons are pretty good though. Youmu’s sixth tier in particular seems to be tailor made to use against the final boss.

We can now combine Orichalcum and Adamantite shards into Orichalcum and Adamantite.

Goodness. That awesome weapon. Gimme gimme.

The Kusanagi is very loaded with passive effects. It carries slayer effect against some of the most dangerous enemy type like Dragon, Deity, and Immortal, it has 100 Exorcism to penetrate Divine Barrier, and it increases all stats except for MAtk. Its really great. The downside of it is that most physical oriented character really depends on their unique weapon (Sakuya in particular needs her greatsword to kick rear end). I guess Nitori and Youmu could get by without their unique weapon? Youmu is stronger, so the ultimate weapon is now in her hands.

Yeah, the origin of SDM crew is kept vague. That's why I'm going on a pure speculation.
