I don’t think it’s an American vs. British thing, British characters are often a lot more flawed, but that doesn’t stop the protagonist from being likable.
Dave Lister on Red Dwarf is a bum, and ultimately very flawed, but beneath all that he is essentially a good person, you could even argue that he is heroic.

I prefer murals of Asian Jesus personally.

Jesus is always Asian, he was born there lol. Plus he could've walked all over the place if he wanted, might have, very bad records all around. Then again I suppose in his thirties he gained the power to walk on water so maybe he did walk over to the Americas. However, most people agree Jesus was a generally good dude and combined with his claims of omniscience, he would know better than to do such a cruel thing like introduce what he knew would eventually become Paul's awful religion.

The Young Ones
Even things from much earlier like the Rise and Fall of Reginald Perrin or Porridge or Rising Damp or all sorts of things are all about "Look at how poo poo these people are".
Lister is an Everyman Hero in his way, pretty different from what you'd usually get.

Always Sunny is one of the few US shows I think that follows our traditions of comedy rather than US ones.
