We have a new Champion of the Year, and despite an impressive showing across the entirety of the year, it didn't turn out to be Athena. With 20% of the votes she managed a respectable 2nd place finish, but that seemed to be the story of her 2023 in Punch Sport Pagoda. While she managed to win 3 of the 12 months (one shared with DDT's Yuki Ueno), she also managed 4 finishes in the Top 3. Consistency was Athena's watch-word, but it wasn't enough to get the big win. Nor was MJF's record-setting 400+ day run as AEW Champion, or the fact he managed to get the most votes of any Champion in Punch Sport Pagoda across this year's monthly polls. No, both of them fell to a very special wrestler, a man with plenty of enemies who - as Jon Moxley so nicely put it - all seem to be rooting for him regardless! Yes, the winner of Punch Sport Pagoda's Champion of the Year for 2023 was Eddie Kingston, who proved himself not just a bum but the KING OF THE BUMS! For only the third time, and for the first time since Takeshi Morishima shared the honors with WWE's Edge in 2007, Punch Sport Pagoda's Champion of the Year is the Ring of Honor Champion! 16 years is a long time to wait, and it is fitting that Eddie Kingston becomes only the second ROH Champion to have sole possession of Champ of the Year Status, and it's with the man he so recently beat to earn the Continental Crown: Bryan Danielson. 2006 was Bryan Danielson's year, but 2023 is now and forever more Eddie Kingston's! Very glad for Eddie Kingston! but I still feel this was MJFs year. Starting to think this poll should be renamed PSPs Pro-Wrestling Champion for November - December 2023!!! But seriously, great work J-Ru and a big rip of the hat to my friend Eddie Kingston
