I just rented the first vhs, and I think this is one of those things that I can't watch raw. Maybe when I catch up to the fansubbers I'll have a good enough feel for it to watch raw but the first ep was pretty intimidating. Thanks for this great thread, it really convinced me to get into this show.

Even if you catch up to the subbers you can never watch an episode RAW. There will be just so much important dialogue missing that nothing will make sense. (I tried a few years ago)

What should I call it then ? a "japanese motion graphics production" ? "Anime" means "cartoon" doesn't it ? In any case I didn't mean it in a derogatory way, and of course I wouldn't put LoGH on the same level as, say, Tom and Jerry... Anyone who would do that would deserve to have the Thor Hammer fired up their rear end.

But a better source would probably be from here (if you're not a biologist.) The problem I have with the word cartoon when used with anime is that it is linked to ONLY something children watch (at least in the US - although hopefully that will change - or is changing - check your local standards). Admittedly some shows are in that age range, but anime (and manga - which I've heard some older Japanese use for both animated and printed images) goes beyond just that limited subset. Basically it comes down to usage, and the social/emotion conatations behind it. You may not have a problem with it, but I prefer using anime instead so I don't get the "You watch a childrens show?!?" whenever I talk about them. And then I have to explain the difference.  So if I use a word they don't know, it's easier to talk about. Of course I don't have to do it in this forum, but it has become kind of instinctive to do so.

Ok, I need a little help sorting out everything. I borrowed from my friend the entire DVD collection, which came out to 13 discs for the 110 episode series, plus 6 more discs for everything else. - It has "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" which I think is the first pilot movie, yes? - It has "Golden Wings" which is the prequel movie done in the style of the manga. - Is has "Overture to a New War" which is the one where Yang and Reinhard get into the ring formation battle and call it a draw, if I'm not mistaken. But there's a lot of other weird stuff. There are several miniseries which are done with computerized coloring and somewhat more modern production. - One of the miniseries is called "Those Who Revolt," - There's also "Survivors" - "Morning's Dream, Night's Song" They all appear to be prequel miniseries. In any case, start with the main episodes of the CARTOON (yeah, yeah...) first, watch at the very least the first season, so you know all the main characters, before watching the rest, which are all prequels. "Overture to a New War" basically retells what happens in the first two episodes. "My Conquest is the Sea of Stars" tells Yang's and Reinhard's first confrontation, chronologically taking place before the events in "Overture" "Those who revolt", "Survivors" and "Morning's Dream, Night's Song" are actually chapter titles, part of the prequel spin-off episodes, of which there are two seasons, which as a whole are called "Gaiden" or "Gaiiden" (not sure about the spelling). 1) "A Hundred Billion Stars, A Hundred Billion Lights", which chronologically start when Reinhard and Siegfried are fresh out of Officer Training and get their first posting on a shithole frozen border planet 2) "Spiral Labyrinth" also features stories of Yang Wenli's beginnings. This season ends with Reinhard being promoted a full three-stripe admiral and receiving his personal flagship, the Brünnhild The stories depicted in those two seasons are not always in chronological order, they each take place in chapters of about 3 to 5 episodes, some of them are very good, some others suck, but it's all worth watching. Haven't seen "Golden Wings", crappy HK subs and unusual character design were not good enough for me.

I just watched ep24 ("Victory for whose sake?") and drat! I was thinking that the only thing this show is really missing to be a top-notch space opera is an interesting hard sci-fi twist. And Yang Wenli delivered! Hetook out the Artemis Necklacewith science !edit: although it seems suspcious. Considering the difference of mass of the projectile and of the planet, AFAIK, no. Of course where it would definitely some sort of effect is if it hits the planet, the impact would release lots and lots of energy and really gently caress up the whole place, considering how a similar-sized asteroid going nowhere near as fast could in theory trigger huge tidal waves and block the sunlight for years and induce the death of 99% of living species and all that.

Okay, I just started watching Gaiden, side 1, all about Young Reinhard and Kircheis and their adventures in the military before becoming famous. I don't really think discussing this merits spoiler tags because it's all prequel material anyway, but just in case someone disagrees(and since this thread has had enough accidental mouseover casualties as it is), I'll spoiler most of this. I'm up to the third episode, where Reinhard stabs an ICICLE through a guy's neck and BREAKS IT OFF, god drat that was hardcore. But the scene where he sprays the Alliance soldiers with fire extinguisher spray to freeze them solid, then they shatter had me going  . Come on, freezing the SUITS solid I can see, but their entire bodies? My suspension of disbelief can take a lot but this is kind of pushing it.Nonetheless, I am newly in love with the series again. No sooner did the first episode finish playing the OP and go to a panning scene, than came the triumphant sound of someone throwing a wineglass to the floor in a fit of rage. I got exactly what I came for in the first 3 seconds of the first episode.

Episode 49 had one of those great LoGH intellectual moments (when Yang and Julian are talking on the bridge) that I love so much. The show really is academically valid. LoGH is a like an entertaining refresher in international relations theory. The current conflict starting with Rantemaro totally delivers too. The series slowed down quite a bit after Iserlohn v. Gaiersburg, but not so anymore.

The real danger would be falling debris from the stations, but without an idea exactly how big they are it's not real clear how much of a problem this is. It's clear they're much larger than the ships but the ships in the show aren't much bigger than modern naval vessels. Oh well. Science does kind of take a back seat in many parts of this show - the one battle near the black hole, the battle at Vermillion between Yang and Lohengramm with the 'debris cloud of dead ships spanning an orbital plane  , Bucock's last fight in the asteoid field (there's no way they'd all be that close together), and there's lots more examples. But these are typical violations that are made more often than not in sci-fi so I think we've all gotten used to them.

I finished the Gaiden OVAs yesterday. Those were great; Just more of the same material I was already used to in LOGH, which is exactly what I wanted. The mystery aspects were fun too. I also watched Golden Wings, which I did not like at all, and in fact actively disliked. The new designs were crap, the story was bland and unoriginal, and everything about it was generally dull and predictable. Instead of it being about Reinhard doing something unconventional, unique, or especially perceptive as a commander, it was just "Oh, Reinhard's a good commander, so the fleet's okay!"  Don't waste your time with this if you're already used to the main series' quality, because Golden Wings does not even come close to matching it in style or substance.

I just discovered this thread, and like some of you, I really enjoyed Crest/Banner of the Stars. My question is, should I begin with episodes 1-4 on CA or should I download the later episodes that have more seeds and then catch up later? By all means do start with 1-4 ! Torrents are pretty fast, and considering the torrent with eps 1-4 has 10 seeds and 20 leechers, you'll very likely be done with downloading in less than 24 hours.

This is more a bit torrent question then a question about LOGH, but will my connection speed to other peers be effected by using a bit torrent client from within a small office or home network enviornment? There seems to be around 5 seeds and 10 peers for the particular set of episodes I'm downloading, but I'm only receiving about 1 kilobyte/second.
