I don't have the money for a good surround sound setup yet, but I'm keeping an eye out on bundle packages for whenever they become available. I just moved in here and spent about $4,000 on furniture and the TV, so I'm trying to lay low for a bit on the spending.

Computer I built, specs too boring to list.
Logitech Z-5300s or something, just a 2.1 setup.
Beyerdynamic DT-990s (custom ordered - totally awesome)

I'm looking for a decent receiver/speaker bundle for cheap if you guys can recommend anything. It's an apartment so it doesn't need wicked power levels.

That looks good. Any thoughts of staining that entertainment center a dark color to maybe match the rest of the furniture?

And Ikea doesn't sell that computer desk without the top do they? I'd love just that desk.

Yeah the ikea desk without the top is available, I just wanted the top segment.

The entertainment center is built-in in my apartment so I don't feel like staining it. Otherwise I would totally do that. I like the black-brown look a lot more than the maple color.

You think Seattle's bad, move to the Bay Area. A two bedroom condo in a safe (not necessarily nice - just safe) neighborhood is $450,000 at least.

Want to buy a house? $600,000 for a safe neighborhood for a 1000-1200 square foot house that's 40 years old.

My new speakers came today. I thought they looked good in pictures but my GOD in person they are astoundingly gorgeous. Then I got them hooked up to my stereo and the sound just blew me away. Easily the best sounding (and looking) speakers I've ever owned, I'm dumbfounded by how much detail these things resolve and how deep they play for a 2-way with 5.25" woofers. They are a revelation! I'm so very happy.

Seattle is getting there if you don't want to live in the "greater seattle area". Fix'em ups right next to the high school near here are going fro 500,000.

That 350,000 dollar condo is a studio, I mean, I recognize the bay area is even more ridiculous as is a lot of California but it still hurts. As of last year we were considered the most overvalued city when it comes to cost of living which stings.

Basically we are all hosed. Luckily I don't mind small living spaces and renting so I can put up with it for now!

Thanks, the wood looks amazing in person. I don't know if I'd say "quite a bit" of toe-in, they're a little more than 10 degrees I'd say. I had my previous speakers, B&W CM1s, toed-in even more, since that helped focus their imaging. With these, it doesn't seem to matter if they're facing straight ahead or angled directly at the listener, the soundstage and imaging stays consistently focused.

The tweeter's high end response does start to roll off a little off-axis, so I have them angled such that their response sounds neutral to me. And I am so very impressed with the sound of these. Simply put, they do pretty much everything right. Well recorded music simply sounds real. They will relentlessly reveal bad recordings though, but they don't shove it in your face. If there's sibilance, you can "see" it clearly, almost hanging in the air, instead of being shot into your ears like needles. I've only heard this level of detail retrieval before whilst wearing my DT 880s.

Here's my current setup. The only thing im truly unhappy with is the TV as I got it a couple years ago for $1200 CDN and felt I should have waited. I'll probably be upgrading to a nice LCD set by the end of the year to take advantage of everything.

This is where I watch and play mostly everything.

TV - LG RU-45NZ60 (RP-HDTV)
Receiver - Sony STR-K900 + the speakers that came with the set, not sure of the model
360, Wii and PS3

The PC with Logitech Z-5500's. Probably overkill for such a small space but ill be moving out eventually.
Old Dell 2005fpw, im thinking of getting a nice 24" as 20" is now too small for me, haha.

I bought a DVD/CD wall unit from Sears that arrive this past week. Put it together and now have a place for all my DVD's, xbox 360 games, and books!

The center channel is pushed to the side by my roomates cat who loves to lay on the glass above the HK receiver because it gets super hot. My next purchase is an audio stand/pier so that I can move the receiver and stuff out from under there just for the sake of cooling and easier access to the back.

150 or so paperbacks and all my dvd's and games with a few shelves left over for future purchases. And I have a normal mini bookshelf to stick on the right if I run out of room.

And last night I went out and bought a dark brownish/gray reclining sofa to replace an ancient uncomfortable sectional. It gets delivered next Friday. Let the home theater enjoyment begin!

/update I got my new couch on Friday. Here's a picture of it in place.

I'm color blind so when I bought it I thought it was brown but learned later that day that it's olive. While it looks a little weird to me in photos, it seems okay in person and everyone else tells me it's a good color that should go with everything. p.s. the panorama makes the room look skinnier than it is. The couch is further away from the TV a bit and sitting on far side of the futon is okay for watching TV. Also, fake wood panelling makes me want to throw up but it's a rental so I can't very well tear it down and put something nicer up. I wanna buy a house next year.

How are you guys running your cables between your projector and your reciever?
Which format is best for this?
HDMI? Component? VGA?

Component is a lot of cables to run very far.
HDMI is expensive and for some reason randomly stops working with my Vista install.
VGA is a much thicker cable and isn't ideal for HD. Not to mention the signal degrades a lot after a few feet.
RCA doesn't work with HD.

It's kind of weird at the moment. From HDbox ---> projector we are using component, from receiver (from PS3) we are running HDMI and from the HTPC we are running monitor cable. I'm running into handshake issues doing HDbox ---> receiver --> projector, so until I get that figured out we can't use the receivers upconverting capabilities to handle all the switching.

Excuse the glare. Only opportunity I've had for pictures is when the kids are down for a nap.

Overall, very pleased with this set-up. Just replaced the TV this past weekend after getting rid of a Vizio VP50. Fucker had problems from the start(overheating, bright white line on the left-side of the screen that wouldn't go away until a hard reboot, etc, etc.)

The Philips Recorder is great. Has 120gb hard-drive built in that I can record to and not have to record to DVD every time. Has the same functionality of a DVR, but without the monthly fee(yay.)

Eventually, that bottom right space will house a Playstation 3. I really like the idea of streaming my music collection and ripping DVD's to a hard-drive for playback whenever I like. Also like the idea of Netflix through the built-in browser in the PS3 on my TV. Just waiting for the right opportunity to purchase.

This was done very cost-conciously. With a mortage, 2 children and a wife, there's not alot of room for hugely expensive things like this. Cuz.. y'know.. kids have gotta eat.

I live an an apartment so I can't do much to hide cables, so I run them under my rug in a trap. I use component because I have a Inday signal splitting amp. No visible degradation, and it can output to my primary set and the projector which is sweet at parties, and makes it so I don't have to switch between the two all the time. Inday now sells a signal splitting component matrix switch with amping that looks like it would be awesome for most people with just 3-4 components to worry about.

I use some cable duct bought cheaply from a hardware store and run my cables along the skirting boards.

I have an older 720p projector with no HDMI, so I use both component and VGA cables running a total length of 10m each. The component cables are fine and clear, but I originally had 2 x 5m vga cables without the ferrite bead and the image was unwatchable. I then installed two 5m vga cables with the ferrite beads and the picture is fairly crisp now.

Hmmm - I have a tiny apt.
I think I will take your advice and get some kind of cable duct. Looks like I will be running HDMI and component just so I have a HD alternative when one stops working.
What I really need is some kind of A/V switcher not unlike a receiver. I am poor however and don't have a lot to spend on a receiver. Right now I have a HTPC (shuttle), a dvd player and a playstation 2 but I will probably add 1 or 2 more gaming consoles in the future. All of this stuff is in the front of the room while the projector is of course at the back. Any suggestions how to set this up ideally?
I am crap at figuring this stuff out. I figure some kind of receiver (or switcher?) will be necessary to make all of this work.

Does your LG have an inbuilt DVB tuner?

If so, have you had the software update (click on the link at the bottom) performed yet?

I've only upgrade about 3 or 4 hundred of these, so it caught my eye :)
