I unwittingly met Kyle from Nightbringer at work the other day. He came up to my register at the liquor store and I asked him about his Nightbringer shirt, to which he replied, "Oh yeah, that's my band". We talked about some albums and upcoming releases and then he told me they're opening for Watain this Monday. I'm thinking a trip up to Denver is in order. Any Colorado Springs-ites want to carpool?

Sweet, just ordered my first ever batch of black metal albums. It ended up costing roughly $400, which got me 20 albums. The original plan was no more than $200, but I just kept discovering all these great bands... it just wouldn't stop. Oh well, what's money right?

$400? That sounds like an awful lot for only 20 albums. Next time try used bins. The whole fad aspect died awhile ago and you can find killer stuff in used bins. All that money spent on irony, oh dear.

I only know of one record store we have in Stockholm that would work like that, and at the same time actually have a decent range of black metal albums, but I forgot its name... I don't even know if it's still active these days. All other decent stores (that I know of) have had to close down unfortunately. And if I'd go to, for example, Rocks or Åhlens (popular store chains) they would have higher prices, and probably not have the albums I was looking for (and I've never seen any "used bins" at these places). This way I at least got 98% of the stuff I was looking for, and scored a book for $1!

$20 an album is about 14-15€ which is what new albums go for in the metal shops here in Dublin (look harder, every European city has at least one tiny shop peddling BM that will also have lots of used stuff). If you were buying online from the States or from labels you should be paying quite a bit less though.

As a general rule of thumb, if you can actually find black metal albums in a store they're either: A) Extremely well known, cornerstone of the genre releases, which can probably be picked up on online distros for half the price, used for a third of the price, or on ebay for sweet gently caress all as long as you don't care about first editions. B) Recently released shite by a well known band who's previous work still suckers people in. C) Black metal on a relatively "major" label. If it's not a re-released/re-pressed well known album (see part A), avoid. There are exceptions to this and you will find absolute bargains in the used section of many independent music stores (same for oldschool death metal), but 95% of the time if it's new and in a shop, the first online distro you look at will be far cheaper even after shipping.

Yeah I managed to find a few albums under 10eur, but then it added up anyway because some albums would cost 20eur (mostly imports). I don't feel like running around all over town just so I can save 5eur on a few albums though. Money isn't an issue for me right now, so I'd rather just order them online. I'm busy as it is with work and school. Trouble though is that the sites I order from don't have that wide of a selection when it comes to these genres. They generally had 2 or 3 albums by each band I searched for. So do any of you know any (reliable) Scandinavian online record stores that specialises in this kind of music?

It makes me feel better that people in the home countries of these bands pay as much as I would have to to import them. Still doesn't make $20-30 per album any better to swallow, but I know I'm not the only one taking it in the mouth.

Most likely the money they get from the CD sale is going to go right into their van's gas tank or right into the label's bank account to pay back the money they were fronted for recording / art / merch / drugs. Also, when more popular bands go on the road they often have contracts in place with the lesser known touring bands that force them to match their merch prices. It gets even more annoying when venues / promoters want a cut of merch sales too.

Immortal is one of my all-time favorite bands, mainly because of their songs and live shows, but also partly due to the fact that they aren't really taking themselves 100% serious image-wise. These two bands, on the other hand, have no sense of humor whatsoever. You might enjoy Taake. I think most black metal fans would enjoy the black metal stylings of "sewage disposal" based band Stiny Plamenu. http://www.myspace.com/diveintothewastewater Their lyrics are based on some sort of sewer mythology that the band apparently made up, and they're mostly in some gay foreign language (lolol) so you can't understand them anyway, but they feature characters like The Sewage Disposal Lord, Lady of the Waterworks, Son of the Manhole Lids, and The Cesspool Master. The actual music is pretty good, very fast blastbeat stuff with good melodies and whatnot. I highly recommend it.
