I finally beat flamelurker who was for some reason giving me tons of trouble this time round, unlike all the other bosses who i had trouble with who i've found really easy. I'm putting more points into magic this time, so I can use the epee rapier.

I'm still stuck on him :( I started a mage to gently caress around on and had a much easier time throughout the first few levels, and then today I made a soldier and as soon as I beat Phalanx I pumped his str up to 20 and ran through some of 4-1 for the cool weapons and stuff you can get there.

Then I got murdered by the Vanguard boss guy -_-

I reckon Vanguard is tougher than Adjudicator, the actual boss of 4-1. I don't even know the 'legitimate' way of beating him though, every time I tried to attack him he just flattened me before I could get close enough to hit him. Fortunately he's ridiculously easy to plink with arrows, he doesn't even move from his starting position to attack you!

I guess you could take the alternate route and come up behind him, I don't know if he'd turn around to hit you or if he just sits there as you poke him in the rear end until he dies. Demon's souls really is much easier if you're prepared for melee and ranged fights, I planned to concentrate just on melee but it's not really viable. Thief's ring + bow makes a lot of fights a joke.

I'm pretty sure he won't fight mages that stick to the edge of lockon range with the thief ring. He will turn if you come up behind him, but he won't move very far.

Can you shoot magic without locking on? And what sort of range does it have, comparable to a bow? If so then no problems, just stand anywhere you want and blast him. (I prefer the top of the gate where the two skeleton archers are)

You can, but aiming is a bitch. He makes no move to attack you if you're at the edge of lockon range, so you might as well just lock on and fire away.

In the wrong hands, the stapler is a deadly weapon.

The boss Maneater is giving me fits right now. I can handle myself okay until the second one comes along. At that point, I'm too busy dodging both of them to get off any hits, and I inevitably get knocked off the platform into space. Standing in the middle with the pot seems to make it a bit less aggravating, but not enough.

HURFDURF scary stories are dumb, I'm so cool i lack even the rudimentary analytical abilities to decipher basic themes and archetypes, anything without fast cars and explosions is for babbies, heh im so goddamn tough and grown up :smug:
Vanguard in 4-1 can be defeated in melee if you:
1) Provoke his first attack then dodge out of range,
2) Run in when he is recovering and start attacking--two handing your weapon since a shield is useless against him
3) If he swings his axe again, roll -under- his attacking arm
4) Back up immediately if he starts flapping his wings since he will do a body crush with an AoE effect, then run back in after he lands to continue attacking. Often he will get stuck in a loop of doing this move.

Vanguard in the intro is a little harder, if only because he will actually move toward you. But that's still it.

Melee is perfectly viable, you just kinda have to be good at it. Enemy attacks do not have zany hit boxes. They hit pretty well exactly where it looks like they would, and you can react accordingly if you are aware of the enemy's movements and your defensive options. This is not a game where you can wantonly take hits, even in heavy armor -- heavy armor is basically room for error. If you can't dodge poo poo with your roll in heavy armor, either master the brief invincibility frames at the start of your roll (heavy or light), use a Ring of Great Strength, or wear lighter armor, because avoiding hits is vital.

It also helps greatly to get Total Protection.

Does anyone know some apparent ways to guarantee White Character Tendancy?

I only have one remaining ring, the Friend's Ring, but I can't for the life of me get any White Character Tendancy. The Wiki even seems to be confused on what BP NPCs actually count towards it (I've killed all of them except Ostrava and I think only Satsuki gave me a bump) and I find it almost impossible to find someone who can summon me so I can at least pretend to help before I kill myself to get the Tendancy.

Jesus tap-dancing christ, almost every single time I invade a game I get killed by lag. If you have your back to a person even for a second, even if they're halfway across the drat map, you'll magically get backstabbed.

Also, is there any reason to NOT use Nothern Regalia once you have it? With pure white/black character tenacity, it seems too powerful to have anything even remotely compare.

When I wanted White character tendency, I just cast resurrect on a bunch of random blue phantoms. Of course, that isn't especially helpful for your current playthrough if you used the pureblood soul for Death Cloud or a Blueblood sword.

Seemingly, the only way to push your character tendency towards white is to kill black phantoms. PC black phantoms to be more exact. My character tendency was almost black until I was invaded over and over in 1-4 trying to kill False King. That's the only thing I can really see that moves it in any amount other than negligible. But seeing as you are SL 700+ (I think I remember reading you were crazy high like that?) that could be a really big problem.

Edit: For anyone who hasn't caught on, I'm not 100% sure but I think NCSX has been routinely better at having this game in stock and shipping it to you rather quickly. So I just got this game. It's pretty awesome, but I have a few questions:

1) Why is it that sometimes I can use my bluestone and sometimes I can't? I've used it around the "You can summon here" messages, and I still can't summon.

2) I'm having a bitch of a time with the wall on 1-2. I can sneak past the dragon fire, but by the time I get to the end with the 4 archers + Blue Eyed Knight I get rapefested. It's really bad and makes me feel unsafe.

3) If I go for Longsword +4 will I lose the ability to go to Quality Longsword?

3) If I go for Longsword +4 will I lose the ability to go to Quality Longsword?

1) A blue stone is used when you are in soul form to put down a marker so someone else can summon you to his game to aid him in co-op play. It doesn't allow you to summon someone. That message on the ground is (from what I've seen) usually dropped in areas where people commonly use their blue stones to make themselves available for co-op play.

2) Best advice I have for there is just to rest and heal up briefly behind that cart at the end of the ramparts (to the right of the archers), maybe kill the archers if you can, and then just sprint past the 2 blue-eyed knights into the fog door at the end. That leads to the boss and the knights won't follow you, and if you're sprinting you can probably get by with only getting hit once.

3) Yes, once you go past the branching point (+3 in that case) you can't take another upgrade branch (unless you use a meltstone to return the weapon to its original form, but if you do this you lose all the ore you sunk into upgrading it -- it takes it back to +0, effectively.)

1) You can't summon close to one of the fog doors, and perhaps close to some geometry (to prevent players warping into walls I guess?). Move about 5 yards from a fog door and you can summon fine.

2) I died probably 80 times trying to get through 1-2. Granted, I suck, but that has probably been the most difficult part of the game so far. As a tip for dealing with the 1-2 boss if you are melee, learn to anticipate how his attacks land before worrying about hitting him.

3) Yes you do. You can use a meltstone to backtrack your upgrades, but I think you lose ALL your upgrades, and you don't get back the materials you used to upgrade it in the first place.

Yeah, I think your best bet is to just take out invading black phantoms without doing anything that would shift your character tendency back towards black. I think it was five or six kills to shift me from black-enough-for-Meph to white enough for the Friend Ring.

You can also cast ressurection when you summon blues, it's pretty easy.

I managed to get the Rogue's trophy on a character without the friend ring, so I dunno if it is necessary. I did have a friend ring on another character, but never all the rings on one person. Either you don't need it, or the collect-a-thon trophies are over the whole account.

On a completely different note, Black Phantoms would be so much better if they spawned ahead of the host, instead of behind. The way it is now everyone just waits for the phantom to show up, without giving him a chance for mischief.

Once you throw down the Blue stone, you have no choice of who summons you. If you're trying to have a specific friend summon you, your best bet is to talk ahead of time and drop it in some strange spot that only they will know about.

No -- you don't have any control over who summons you once they select your rune. The best way to ensure that you play co-op with a friend is to coordinate an out of the way place for you to drop your rune, and then have him ready to pick your rune as soon as you drop it. This is pretty easy to do -- the last few weekends I've played co-op with a friend, and all we do is get on the phone, coordinate where I'm dropping my rune, then he picks it up the second I place it down. We use the phone thanks to Sony's awesome XMB voice chat (or rather, lack thereof), but other than that minor inconvenience, it's pretty easy.

Speaking of co-op, has anyone tested what the limits of level disparity are for playing co-op? I think at some point it was 10 levels (i.e., no more than 10 levels difference between you and another player in order to be able to play co-op), but it's definitely more than that now, as last weekend I was playing co-op with a friend who was 11 soul levels below me. Is it 20 now?

At least once, I believe. There was a patch that made some substantive changes to the way world tendency is handled (for the worse, as far as pretty much everyone is concerned) and that slightly nerfed this big old sword many people seem to like. I think there might have been some small, stealth patch at some point after that, but maybe I'm misremembering that.

There were two patches. I'm not sure what the first one was, as it was out within a month or so of the game's release. Probably just fixing a few things here and there.

The second patch, however, was small and yet substantially changed how the tendency system works. Each stage, as well as your character, has a tendency: white, black and whatever is in between. This tendency shifts with certain actions. Having the stages or your character at certain tendencies gives you certain benefits or problems, which you can find in the wiki. Before the patch, you could, tediously, move the tendency whichever direction you wanted with some work. After the patch, moving it either direction is incredibly easy and far less tedious, but moving it towards white has a new-found problem. The only way to move it to white is by beating a boss. You gain more tendency while in corporeal form and even more with blue phantoms helping out. If, for whatever reason, you don't gain pure white tendency after you've killed all of the bosses in any given stage, you're hosed. There's no way to gain the tendency back. That's why everyone typically hates the patch.

The same patch that hosed with tendency also fixed the Meat Cleaver, a unique weapon that uses faith as a stat to whoop rear end. It still whoops rear end.
